CB Devon Torrence (official thread)

Yeah you're right this was his first year starting, and I don't think he started every game. He split a lot of time with Amos. This offseason should help immensely with his maturation at CB. I think he'll start full-time next year, and Chekwa could be fighting for his spot, IMO.

No way is Checkwa fighting for his job....imho. CC doesnt have to get his head around in the NFL. He is almost always sitting in the WR`s backpocket when they call pass interference on him because he doesn`t look back....if he did he may well lead the team in interceptions.

I feel much better about our secondary with Chimdi coming back to man the primary cb spot. We should be great at the cb spot if both stay healthy and play the entire year. This defense is set to be dominant next season. We have talented galore and a great coaching staff....I will miss Coleman, I have to admit that. Go Bucks

Actually...in the NFL you have to look back for the ball. In college...you are allegedly allowed to facegard. Refs always call it though.

Torrence Focuses Fully on Football, Lets Baseball Slide
By Tony Gerdeman

Last year, Devon Torrence started the season embroiled in a battle for the starting cornerback position opposite Chimdi Chekwa. Andre Amos won the job over Torrence initially, but both saw the field about the same amount of time.

The coaches preferred Amos? experience and greater understanding of the position, but loved Torrence?s raw ability. They knew that they had to get him some snaps in order to see how he would do in the face of adversity.

His big break came in week two against USC. He came off the bench and recorded eight tackles, including a sack, and also defended a pass. Torrence was inserted into the starting lineup the following week and he has been there ever since.

?Last year I felt like I was just out there in the fire,? Torrence recalled, ?and either I was going to get burned or I was going to make some plays. Fortunately I made some plays and got the starting job.?

Torrence Still Has the Itch
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS ? Devon Torrence?s stint at wide receiver was short-lived, but the experience has left a lasting impact on the Ohio State senior.

A two-sport star out of high school, Torrence has played both sides of the ball during his time in Columbus, but settled in as a starting cornerback last season across from Chimdi Chekwa. He made 35 tackles, intercepted two passes, forced two fumbles and recorded one sack for one of the top-rated defenses in the country, but some itches just never go away. At least until they are scratched.

?I wish I could catch passes right now,? Torrence said recently following the defense?s 78-24 thrashing of the offense in the jersey scrimmage.

?I wish coach (Jim) Tressel would come to me and say we want to put you in the slot or something like that.?

As a standout at Canton South High School, Torrence was used to having the ball in his hands. Both a running back and receiver, Torrence scored 48 touchdowns and racked up more than 3,000 all-purpose yards during his prep career.

He also played safety in high school, and a big reason he chose the Buckeyes was their track record for sending defensive backs to the NFL, but Torrence was moved from corner to wideout as a true freshman in 2007 as the coaching staff looked for a way to get his athleticism on the field. He moved back to corner the following season after the Buckeyes added DeVier Posey, Lamaar Thomas and Jake Stoneburner in the class of 2008.

?Had I played receiver I?m sure I would have been in a good position there too eventually, but I?m here playing cornerback and I?m just thankful for the opportunity,? the 6-foot-1 Torrence said.

?Maybe someday Tress might give me a shot over there (on offense). I really want to get a shot at the return game so I can get the ball in my hands that way.?

Perhaps this means Boom will be pulled off of special teams, where he was not especially effective. This would also help him stay healthy to continue as a steady back in a talented but workhorse free backfield.

My thoughts exactly. JT seems very cautious about who he puts back deep, probably with concerns about ball security. Boom provided that. I'm hoping others can step up and provide security and explosion. Devon talked a little during Spring workouts about how he really likes offense and having the ball in his hands. I'd love to see him in the mix back deep.
