CB Devon Torrence (official thread)

That wasn't worded well. I think Boom is a steady contributor, but isn't a guy you lean on to carry it 250 times per season.

I think it was more along the lines of you sounding like Musberger doing the intro to the Rosebowl running down the "players to watch" (or worse, fruitlessly trying to educate Michigan fans aobut our team). I think we all know what Boom does... anyway, it was just funny. No big deal.

Definitely reads like the booming orchestra is in the background..."FRO-zen TUNDRA of Lammm-beau Field...."

Canton South's Devon Torrence brings out the best as a Buckeye
By WALTER DOERSCHUK
The Press-News

It's only the end of July, but the Ohio State Buckeyes can already hear "OH-IO" as they prepare for the upcoming college football season.

Devon Torrence, a 2007 Canton South High School graduate, is entering his senior year on the Ohio State football team. He has thoroughly enjoyed his time as a Buckeye.

"It's been a great opportunity for me," Torrence said. "I am truly blessed to play at Ohio State."

"It's crazy it has gone so fast and I'm looking forward to another great year with those guys."

The guys Torrence will take the field with may feel an extended amount of pressure this season as many have predicted Ohio State to contend for the National Championship. The Buckeyes will feature Heisman hopeful Terrelle Pryor on offense as well as All-American candidate Cameron Heyward on defense.

Torrence noted his team's expectations are to compete for the crystal football.

"We're going to compete week in and week out, have a fun year and compete for the National Championship," he said.

CB Devon Torrence: No 10 (6-0, 190)
A tall, gifted athlete who possesses good overall length and a thick, muscular lower half. Showcases good patience in his drop and does a nice job keeping his base down and feet under him, but needs to do a better job using his length to get a bump on receivers when playing close to the line, as he isn?t comfortable in press coverage yet. Is stiff when asked to transition out of his back-pedal, though, and fails to quickly get back up to speed and track the football vertically.

Isn?t real comfortable in off coverage at this stage and just looks really mechanical with his footwork. Is not a real fluid athlete and just plays tight from the waist down. More of a physical, straight-line guy who would be better served to play in the predominantly zone-scheme where he can play with his back to the sideline, read the quarterback and use his natural size/range to go get the football. However, because of his baseball background and at wide receiver, he has never really given his full attention to football and it really shows in his overall technique/development at this stage.

Impression: More of an athlete than football player at this stage and simply looks too stiff to hold his own in man coverage at the next level. More of a developmental guy with some upside.

Devon Torrence comes up big for OSU in win
By Todd Porter

COLUMBUS ?

Devon Torrence felt a sense of responsibility to tradition. He is a defensive back in Ohio State?s backfield from Stark County. The last time Ohio State won a national title, the Buckeyes had two defensive backs from Stark County in Mike Doss and Dustin Fox on the field.

Saturday after Torrence blocked a field goal and tied a career-high with eight tackles he knew he more than did his part in a 36-24 OSU win over No. 12 Miami.

?It means a lot to win and carry on that tradition,? Torrence said.

The Canton South High School graduate played a key role in the way Ohio State?s defense held one of the country?s better quarterbacks in check. Hurricanes quarterback Jacory Harris threw for 232 yards, but he needed 39 attempts and he was picked off four times. Torrence and fellow cornerback Chimdi Chekwa played Miami?s talented receivers with a new degree of physical, in-your-face coverage.

?They had good receivers and we had to learn how to play those guys all week in practice,? Torrence said. ?(Travis Benjamin) was fast.?

OSU?s game plan was to jam Miami?s receivers at the line and play physical football. If a Hurricane caught the ball down the field, punish them with a hit. Several times Buckeye defenders jarred the ball loose with big hits.

?We wanted to play everything deep to short,? Torrence said. ?(Benjamin) is only like 5-10, 170 pounds. He?s a little cat and our mindset was to get up in them, knock them off their routes and play Cover 2 and roll up and knock them off their feet.?

As for Miami?s swagger?

?They weren?t saying too much,? Torrence said. ?We had a knot on them the whole game.?

Torrence?s blocked field goal in the third quarter kept a lid on any kind of comeback bid. He came off the right edge to block the kick.

I was really unimpressed with the Ohio State cornerback play this weekend. Devon Torrence simply plays too high in his drop and it takes him so long to regain balance and close on the football on passes in front of him. Some of those deep outs he gave completions up on were in the air for an eternity and he never even got close when asked to drive on the football. Chimdi Chekwa, on the other hand, despite his opportunistic two picks, isn?t real impressive in press coverage off the line, is really leggy when asked to turn and run and consistently allowed receivers to easily get behind him. Both guys are gifted size/speed athletes, but are so raw technically that it really takes away from their ability to make plays on the football in man-coverage. Both look at best like reserve-type options in the NFL to me.

Best hit absorbed: Buckeyes cornerback Devon Torrence made a good read on Ohio's first pass of the game, broke on the ball and tipped it into the air. Tyler Moeller flew in to make the interception, but he also took out Torrence in the process.

"I saw the quarterback was rolling out and there's only a few routes a receiver can run with a quarterback rolling out," Torrence said. "So I kind of knew he would sit down and the receiver's route wasn't as vigorous as something like [OSU receiver] DeVier [Posey] runs, so I just sat on the route a little bit.

"Tyler hit me in my stomach, and I landed on my hip. We got the turnover though, so I'll take a couple bruises for a turnover all day."

Played a hell of a game against Ohio U. Seemed like he was everywhere. That deflected pass he had in the 1st quarter on the bomb down the middle was brilliant and perfectly timed. If he doesn't get a mitt on it, it's a TD.
