Canton South's Torrence among class of 15 signees
Thursday, February 8, 2007
By Todd Porter REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS When Devon Torrence gets to Ohio State's campus, Jim Tressel may be his biggest fan on the baseball field. But through this spring, Tressel is hoping Canton South's Major League Baseball prospect has a hard time hitting water if he fell out of a boat. Torrence was one of 15 high school seniors to sign national letters of intent Wednesday to play football at Ohio State. Tressel signed a smaller class to preserve scholarships for next year.
Torrence is one of a handful of recruits who could be a two-sport star at Ohio State.
"He's been working on his hitting skills the last couple of weeks down in Florida," Tressel said. "I've been telling him I hope he hits .221 because I don't want Major League Baseball to take him away from us. He can be a great defensive back here."

Whether he likes it or not, at least one recent OSU football signee may have some decisions to make in the near future regarding his Buckeye football career.

Defensive back Devon Torrence signed a letter of intent to play football at Ohio State this February. Torrence is widely regarded as one of the top-10 football prospects in the state and a legitimate cover-corner prospect. The problem is, football may not be his best sport.

Stark County's leading rusher and passer are among the five county players selected to play in the Grange Insurance Ohio North-South Football Classic this summer.

McKinley tailback Morgan Williams and Alliance quarterback Charles Babb combined for 70 touchdowns and 5,912 yards of offense last fall in leading their teams to the playoffs. BASEBALL OR FOOTBALL?: Which sport will it be for Torrence?

CANTON TWP. What to do, what to do?

A big decision awaits Canton South High School senior Devon Torrence.

The Major League Baseball Draft is less than a month away. Torrence likely will be picked in the first 10 rounds, maybe cracking the top five.

Wherever he is selected, he must measure that against his football scholarship to Ohio State, where his brother DeVoe is expected to join him in the fall of 2008. Devon also plans to play baseball for the Buckeyes.

Torrence said the process has gained steam over the last three weeks. Scouts show up so regularly, he's gotten to know most of them.

He entered this week batting .410 with six doubles, seven triples, 18 RBIs, 34 runs scored and 16 stolen bases. He's walked 26 times in 22 games.

Scouts describe the 6-foot-1, 185-pound Torrence as a raw talent with quick hands who is going to develop into his frame.

"Devon has those five tools they look for in high school players," Bourquin said. "That's what attracts scouts."

Jason (Canton, OH): Devon Torrence what round? Or football at OSU?

Jim Callis: I don't think he's going to go high enough to lure him away from the Buckeyes. Interesting athlete, though.

GOT HIM Canton South senior Devon Torrence (right) is tagged out on a steal attempt Thursday by Canfield's Mike Hoelzel during a Division II baseball regional semifinal. South lost, 4-2, to finish the season 22-8.

HUDSON Get 'em on. Get 'em over. Get 'em in. So goes that old baseball wisdom.

The Canton South High School baseball team put plenty of runners on base during Thursday's Division II regional semifinal. And they usually moved them over.

The problem was getting them home.

South's Devon Torrence took matters into his own hands the following inning. With one out, Torrence sent a shot into the right-field gap for a triple, then scored when Canfield botched the relay. The speedy senior never broke stride other than to make sure he touched third on his way to tying the game.

"Man, can he fly," Canfield coach Matt Koenig said.
