CB Devon Torrence (official thread)

Part of me hopes he does really well for himself in the baseball draft, as the money seems to flow like Buckyle's wine :) in that sport moreso than football. The other part of me certainly does not wish ill on the guy as far as his overall fortunes go, but wouldn't mind seeing him succeed in a silver bullet helmet. This guy can't lose, good luck Devon! Buckeye forever, no doubt.

Baseball notebook: OSU football recruit likely to be picked in draft

Thursday, June 7, 2007 3:40 AM

From staff and wire reports

It's not likely that Devon Torrence will turn his back on an Ohio State football scholarship, but coach Jim Tressel could be a bit nervous today, anyway. Torrence, a Canton defensive back who signed a letter of intent with OSU in February, probably will be picked in the Major League Baseball draft, which begins today in Orlando, Fla.

That article makes it sound like he's going to be a Buckeye. Torrence is probably hoping for 2nd-3rd round money to make it a tough choice, with the other articles projecting him as round 5 at the very best.

I noticed one scout list him as a 5-tool player, but he is not listed as hitting any homers this season. I don't see anyone going too high for him if he's not much of a power threat.

I'd be surprised if he goes that baseball route. It doesn't even matter so much where he goes but if some team offers Devon higher than slot money. So this will probably draw out, some chicken littles on BN will whine, and Torrence will report to Columbus in August.

Well, we are now into round 5 of the MLB Amateur Draft. Still Torrence's name has not been called by pick 184.

The only good news for Devon, I guess, is that he has a simple and good choice ahead of him - with the Buckeyes on the gridiron.

I think Devon is going to be a stud defensive back for us. Maybe this sounds stupid, but getting to the MLB, then making good money in the MLB is MUCH harder and rougher than getting to the NFL. Especially as an Ohio State defensive back.

None the less, a 6'2 200 lb defensive back who hits like a safety, and can run a legit 4.45 forty.

Pretty interesting draft for houston so far. They've drafted 3 CF so far and two of them are more than likely go to play college football instead. The other one was Chad Jones safety who loi with LSU. He went to the same HS as Aaron Johnson in LA.

Stated that he said that if he wasn't drafted in the first 5 rounds then he would be a Buckeye. Then says it depends on his signing bonus.

Yeah some guys won't get drafted earlier due to signability, but if the Stros are willing to pony up the money there is still a chance he could go the baseball route...
