CB Denzel 'Hurt! My! Feelings!' Ward (All B1G, All-American, Pro Bowl, Cleveland Browns)

I'll go one step further. The rules should be eliminated. Not to get political (as I've been criticized on this site for that before), but the powers that be will never be satisfied until the game is ruined.

If they get their way, the powers that be will have every team playing for National Participation Trophies instead of championships. :sneaky: :urban2:

I am on board with that personally but being realistic, I think the only thing we will see changes to the rule, not an all out removal. At the very least, an in-game suspension needs to go. Make the review occur over a weekend instead of 1-2 minutes in a booth and apply it to the next game if it was truly egregious. Ideally just get rid of it and have personal fouls for it like it used to be. I am getting off topic of this thread but anything would be better than the current rule and its application.

I have to agree. If it's malicious enough to warrant in-game removal, a la Burflict, that should be a personal foul.

The way it is nowadays, I barely agree with 20% of 'targeting' calls, and I'm guessing most people fall into that camp. When a rule fails 80% of the time, it should be changed.

There really seem to be two issues here: (1) whether you agree with what the targeting rule is (which seems to be what you're getting at, based on the bold above), and (2) whether the officials are correctly applying the rule (whether you think the rule is dumb or not). The bigger problem to me is the latter, and that's what happened in Ward's case, per the Big Ten's own admission. When you have officials that incorrectly apply the rules of the game (which is their sole job), that is a huge issue for the league, IMO.

When the replay confirmed targeting somehow I immediately imagined the replay official at home, in his bum clothes, the game on one TV and Madden 18' on another, and a side of Nachos next to him with a beer in his cup holder on his lazy boy with the feet prop kicked up. Here's how I imagine the conversation going.

Replay: Hey I'm busy right now what do you need, can you just text?

Official: Hey, no it's important we need your opinion we have a targeting situation.

Replay: ok one minute I'll take a peak (un-pauses the madden game and continues playing)

Replay: (3 minutes later) yeah it's targeting. Hey who's winning?

Official: OSU is up 20-7 with like 7 minutes left in the first

Replay: HAHA god what losers. How's the scenery if you know what I mean?

Official: What? Hey I have to go I'm working

Replay: Sounds good, Hey do we get paid today?

Official: What the fuck? Bro, I have to go I'm working

Replay: OH SHIT WHAT A HIT LOL

Official: Which game?

Replay: HAHA your game I think. Some #12 dude LIT HIM UP it's under review

Official: Ah fuck it.. I'll cya

Ends Call...

"THE CALL ON THE FIELD IS CONFIRMED... TARGETING"

The replay official that made the call should be suspended a week without pay. I bet that will get the attention of other replay officials...

Following week, replay official in full pads. Aggrieved player and official 20 yards apart. Ball tossed high in the air. Aggrieved player gets free shot at official. If official can catch the ball he can keep his job/paycheck. If incomplete, suspension and loss of pay. If player is called for targeting, his coach is in charge of video review.

Of course I kid, sort of.
