CB Chimdi Chekwa (Official Thread)

Raiders signed No. 113 overall pick CB Chimdi Chekwa to a four-year, $2.48 million contract.

A Big Ten star in track and field, Chekwa fits owner Al Davis' speed mandate at corner. He's an interesting project for new DBs coach Rod Woodson, likely starting his career on special teams.

Raiders Injury Report: Ford, Chekwa Out, DHB Close To Return
By Chuck Carroll
Football News Now Staff Writer
August 1, 2011

The Oakland Raiders are dealing with injuries early in camp.

Wide receiver Jacoby Ford broke his left hand, rookie Chimdi Chekwa suffered a separated shoulder and Darrius Heyward-Bey remains sidelined with an undisclosed ailment to name a few.

Head coach Hue Jackson stated Ford ?will be fine,? but doesn?t know exactly how long he will be out. Early estimates are a couple of weeks.

As for Chekwa, Jackson downplayed the severity of the injury, but didn?t give an estimate on how long he?d be out.

?I don?t think it?s anything that?s major, by any stretch of imagination. I just think we?re going to let it calm down, simmer down and he?ll get back here soon,? Jackson said following Sunday?s practice. ?I don?t have a timeline to get you but I don?t think he?ll be gone a long length of time. I mean, again, I?m going to be cautious with anybody who has an injury because I want to make sure they are totally healthy before we put them back out there.?

Oakland Raiders: Chimdi Chekwa Preparing to Rescue Raiders' Secondary
River_4_tiny by Rich Langford on Aug 13, 2011

Chimdi Chekwa watched the Oakland Raiders first preseason game, and his shoulder started feeling remarkably better. Now, I am just speculating, but I am guessing he saw Arizona QBs completing passes to either well-covered or wide open receivers and thought, "my team needs me." Obviously, I don't know if that is the case or not, but I do know his shoulder is feeling better. Friday night Chekwa tweeted:

"Ayyeee...I may practice tomorrow."

Officially Chekwa "nicked" his shoulder. Unofficially, it was dislocated. The fact that he is already contemplating hitting the practice field is a great. Initially, I expected it would be almost another two weeks before he returned. Chekwa needs to get some reps and he needs to get them fast. Prior to training camp he is the DB most of us felt would be the most ready to assume nickel responsibilities.

Nothing has happened to change my belief in that. While Chekwa hasn't been on the field, the rest of the guys have, and they look anything but ready.

Making their debuts: Right guard Bruce Campbell, who reported to camp with a gimpy right knee, and rookie cornerback Chimdi Chekwa, who dislocated his left shoulder in the first week of training camp, both made their preseason debuts. Campbell got into it with 49ers defensive tackle Will Tukuafu on his first two plays and Chekwa was called for illegal contact early in his time on the field.

Chekwa making a switch? -- Fourth-round draft pick Chimdi Chekwa, who played cornerback at Ohio State, is close to making the full-time transition to safety after being switched last week and playing there against the Saints.

"I'm a rookie," Chekwa said. "I'm going to try to get on the field any way I can -- special teams, safety, corner, whatever it is. Do whatever they ask of me and see what happens.

"At corner, you're kind of locked into one side of the field. At safety, your eyes open up. You see a lot more than what you usually see at corner ... you've got to have eye control at any position on defense, but at the safeties, it's a lot different because you see so much more. That's something I learned in the past week."

Chekwa learns eye control

There has been a of talk about Raiders rookies this preseason, but one name missing has been fourth-round pick Chimdi Chekwa. He popped out his shoulder early at training camp, and when he returned weeks later, he was seeing more time at safety than cornerback.

"It's brand new," Chekwa said. "They put me at safety last week. They're trying different things, putting us in different places, seeing what we can do."

It would seem like Chekwa would have a better chance at making the team at cornerback. But that ship seemed to leave the dock without him, as DeMarcus Van Dyke, Lito Sheppard, Walter McFadden, Joe Porter, Jeremy Ware and Sterling Moore are all vying for two backup (three?) backup spots.

Now, Chekwa learns safety on the fly, needing a big game Friday and a prolonged absence by injured Mike Mitchell to make the 53. Chekwa was asked what's been the biggest difference between playing cornerback and safety.

"I think really seeing the whole field, making a lot of the checks and a lot of the pre-snap checks and being able to take great angles and things like that," Chekwa said. "At corner you're kind of locked into one side of the field. At safety your eyes open up. You see a lot more than you what you usually see at corner."

Quarterbacks are always trying to fool the safety.

"Definitely," he said. "Eye discipline is real big. You got to have eye control at any position on defense, but at the safeties it's a lot different because you see so much more, and that's something I learned in the past week."

Raiders rookie Chimdi Chekwa gets chance, steps up
Vittorio Tafur, Chronicle Staff Writer
Monday, September 26, 2011

A rookie cornerback comes into the game, and usually the searchlight finds him pretty quickly. So, when 6-foot Chimdi Chekwa came in for an injured Chris Johnson and lined up against 6-5 Jets receiver Plaxico Burress, he was sure he would be targeted.

"I figured they would," Chekwa said. "They did for a little bit, but I think I played good coverage and that discouraged them a little bit."

Chekwa and Joe Porter, who was on the practice squad last year, played most of the game because of injuries to Johnson, Michael Huff and DeMarcus Van Dyke. Chekwa and Porter were in along with No. 1 corner Stanford Routt, as New York used a lot of three-receiver sets.

But the Jets completed only five passes to receivers in the first three quarters, and Chekwa's 4th-and-2 breakup of a pass for Burress was one of the bigger plays of the game.

Chekwa is a surprising contributor, as he had a shoulder injury in training camp and didn't really stand out in the preseason or the first two games. In fact, the Raiders were trying out the fourth-round pick out of Ohio State at safety.

"Football is football," Chekwa said. "I didn't care where I played; I just waited for my opportunity."

He very easily could have been back there at safety as, besides Huff, Tyvon Branch and Matt Giordano also were shaken up Sunday. But they stayed in, and Chekwa might be staying on the field from now on.

"We have some very talented young guys," Routt said. Chekwa and Porter "can play. They may have had their hiccups or bumps in the road in the preseason, but they keep fighting and we don't worry about them."

CHEKWA READY FOR STARRING ROLE
Rookie cornerback Chimdi Chekwa held up well against the Jets when called upon in a pinch. For that, he credits the talented receivers the Raiders have on their roster.
?I don?t think it helped me answer anything,? Chekwa said of his breakout game. ?I do think it helped me gain some experience and feel comfortable out on the field. Practice is tough here. Going against DHB, Denarius (Moore) and Chaz (Schilens), all of them. That makes the game a little bit easier.?
Chekwa said he gained more confidence by holding up well against Jets receiver Plaxico Burress. Now, he?s ready to build upon the solid performance.
?The biggest adjustment is just getting comfortable,? Chekwa said. ?In college, you?re better than a lot of the players. Now in the NFL, everybody is good. So, you have to compete on every snap. That?s the biggest adjustment. That?s what I am getting used to.?
