CB Chimdi Chekwa (Official Thread)

The Raiders filled their eight-man practice squad Sunday, signing CB Chimdi Chekwa, C Colin Miller, RB Jeremy Stewart and DT Vaughn Meatoga.

Chekwa spent last season with the Raiders after being drafted in the fourth round out of Ohio State, and he made the initial 53-man roster this year. But on Saturday, he was one of three players cut to open roster spots for three players the Raiders claimed off waivers.

Chimdi Chekwa was drafted in 2011 and played pretty well as a rookie until injury shortened his season. He came back in 2012, but was relegated to the practice squad, but the well-documented injuries in the secondary gave Chekwa a second chance. He took his chance and didn't set the world on fire, but played pretty decent.

He is good at run support and is a solid tackler. His cover skills need to be improved, but he's young enough and inexpensive enough to keep around at least one more year to develop.

Raiders CB Chimdi Chekwa teamed up with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and Diabetes and Sports Health (DASH) camps to put on Camp One, a sports camp for kids with Type 1 diabetes, at Menlo Atherton High School. Chekwa?s teammates DB Phillip Adams and QB Terrelle Pryor, as well as nine Raiderettes, including Maureen who is a Type 1 diabetic, participated in Camp One, encouraging the campers and helping everyone have fun on a sunny Saturday in the Bay Area.

Chekwa was able to host Camp One with the help of JDRF, the largest global organization focused on Type 1 diabetes research. ?[JDRF] was started back in the 1970?s by a group of parents that really were not feeling that enough research was being done,? explained Stan Pachura, President of the Executive Board of the Greater Bay Area Chapter of JDRF. ?Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease so it?s different than Type 2 diabetes. We have raised over $1.7 billion for Type 1 diabetes research since the organization was formed. We partner with universities and other research organizations and provide the funding to do diabetes research.?

During a radio interview prior to the camp, Chekwa explained his motivation for teaming up with JDRF, which Pachura shared with the campers. Pachura talked about how Chekwa was moved by the difficulties that children with Type 1 diabetes face on a daily basis and that watching them struggle with something they did not cause gave him a new perspective. Chekwa explained how he wants to use the platform he?s been given in the NFL to help inspire kids.

The Oakland Raiders finished up their second week of Organized Team Activities (OTAs) at their Alameda practice facility. The team has one more set of OTAs next week followed by a mandatory three-day mini-camp.

The team improved after getting back into the swing of things on the football field Week 1. ?Week 2 was good,? said CB Chimdi Chekwa. ?Got all the rust off. Guys got better. I think we took a lot of strides coming together more as a team, so it was a good week.?

Chekwa had the opportunity to begin working with veteran defensive back Charles Woodson. ?It?s going well,? said Chekwa. ?He?s definitely a future Hall of Famer, a guy that I watched play growing up. Back before I went to Ohio State I watched Michigan. Now, not so much, but he?s going to be a great addition to the defense and a guy to look up to and learn from.?

Because of all of the new editions to the defense, the players are working on getting to know each other and developing chemistry. Chekwa believes they are gelling together nicely. ?I think it?s really coming along,? said Chekwa. ?We?ve got everybody here at OTAs on the defense so that?s a great thing. Guys are coming along real well, coming together. It?s difficult when you have such a new-look defense, a whole bunch of new parts coming in, but I think we?re doing well.?

Chimdi Chekwa had a wild ride with the Raiders last season. They released him during final cuts, but picked him back up to join the practice squad. They promoted him from the practice squad to the final roster when they released Ron Bartell. He saw action in three games and made four tackles. Special teams are his route to making the final roster at training camp.

The Raiders have nine candidates for the final roster at cornerbacks. The position has been upgraded drastically from last year where they struggled to find production and depth. The coaches are going to have to make some tough decisions regarding cuts. Oakland kept seven cornerbacks last season. They have nine legitimate roster candidates this season.

CB Chimdi Chekwa is one of those defensive backs. Chekwa had an impressive offseason and is already making plays in camp. He says the receivers and defensive backs are enjoying the competition and relish the opportunity to help each other improve.

?A lot of the corners are getting after the receivers. I think the corners have done a good job challenging the receivers and making plays on the ball,? Chekwa said. ?It?s really a big part of getting us ready for being on that island by ourselves. I think I?m fitting in well. I think we?re deep at the cornerback position, and I?m excited about that. I think we?ll have guys ready to play at corner, ready to play on special teams. I?m excited about our team this year.?

Session added, ?It just gets me better knowing I?m going against such good defensive backs. I know they?re going to give me everything, I have to give them everything, I have to be on my toes, I have to counter them, I have to bring my ?A? game every time I?m out there.?
