CB Chimdi Chekwa (Official Thread)

Johnson out, Chekwa to start?
September 30, 2011

Cornerback Chris Johnson, who came out of the Raiders' defeat of the New York Jets on Sunday with a hamstring injury, has not recovered enough to play this weekend against New England and was listed as "out" by coach Hue Jackson.

"Next man up," Jackson told reporters on Friday. "Next man up. Can't worry about it. He's out. He's out. Next man up."

Presumably, rookie Chimdi Chekwa will get the start in Johnson's spot, opposite Stanford Routt.

"I'll make that decision tonight over my Irish coffee and whatever else I have when I sit there and think about some things," Jackson said.

Chekwa, meanwhile, said he's ready.

"I'm going to play the right corner this week," Chekwa said. "Whoever lines up on the right side, I'm going to play the right corner. Stan's going to play the left. That's what I'm going to do. Try to go out there and have fun and play hard."

Chekwa said being a rookie is not a negative.

"I think my biggest challenge is really just going out there and communicating with my teammates, knowing my responsibility and executing, being confident," he said. "I think our coaches trust me. That helps out. The other players also trust me. I'm confident about what I need to do and just communicating with my teammates, to make sure I'm in the right spot, when I'm supposed to be."

Injury report: CB Chekwa has setback
October 6, 2011

Hue Jackson on Chimdi Chekwa: 'I think he's got a chance (to play). He has a chance to be O.K.' (AP)

A day after practicing "limited," rookie cornerback Chimdi Chekwa seemingly had a setback with his strained hamstring and did not practice at all on Thursday.

Not having Chekwa, though, would be an especially tough blow for the Raiders' already-banged up secondary.

"Obviously something is not as well as it needs to be but we'll see where we can get him at (Friday)," Jackson said of Chekwa. "It didn't go well yesterday, so I wanted to make sure we kept him down and see where we can get him at tomorrow, see where he is.

"I think he's got a chance. He has a chance to be O.K."

Chekwa said he first strained the hamstring in punt coverage against the Jets.

"Once you hurt it, you've got to be careful with it. You never know. You really got to pay attention to it. Just trying to see what I can do.

"It irritated me a little bit (against the Patriots) but I've been able to play with it and wrap it up. It didn't bother me too much."

Chekwa back at practice
Written by Levi Damien, Senior Writer | 21 October 2011

It is the all important Friday practice where we are supposed to get the best idea of who will be healthy enough to play on Sunday. And by that logic, rookie Chimdi Chekwa should be back in the lineup for the Raiders against the Chiefs and Janikowski could very well not play.

Chekwa was initially not on the field as practice started but he soon came trotting on the field, helmet in hand. He was likely getting cleared by trainers. With Chris Johnson still out, Demarcus Van Dyke will start on the right side with Chekwa playing third corner.

The Raiders are really going to need young CBs DeMarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa to step up big-time next season. With both Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson proving to be salary-cap casualties, the team is quite thin at that position. We hear that the pair of 2011 draft choices will be expected to take on big roles, perhaps even as starters if no other cornerbacks are added to the roster in free agency. Neither player was particularly effective during limited time on the field as a rookie.

Raiders' situation at CB cause for concern
By PFW staff

The Raiders? clean slate not only took place in the front office, but there will be new faces at corner. Oakland is still trying to revamp the unit after losing Nnamdi Asomugha in free agency in 2011, and the team cut Stanford Routt in February. The two free-agent newcomers, Ron Bartell and Shawntae Spencer, have the most starting experience, but shouldn?t give fans much confidence. Bartell missed all but one game in 2011 because of a neck injury and Spencer played in only nine games last season in San Francisco after losing his starting spot. The pair does have the size that Dennis Allen will want in his secondary (both are 6-foot-1), but expect second-year players DeMarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa to push the veterans. GM Reggie McKenzie also brought in DBs Pat Lee and Brandon Underwood, who played for him in Green Bay. Corner is certainly a weak position for the Raiders, but they do have a couple good safeties in Tyvon Branch and Michael Huff to help mask deficiencies at corner.

3 key Raiders position battles to watch
By Eric Gilmore | CBSSports.com
July 27, 2012

CB -- Shawntae Spencer vs. DeMarcus Van Dyke vs. Chimdi Chekwa: The Raiders added free agents Spencer (49ers) and Ron Bartell (Rams), a pair of experienced corners, and they worked with the first team throughout the offseason. Bartell looks like a lock on the left side, but Spencer could face a challenge at right cornerback after a rough 2011 season. Spencer started every game in 2009 and 2010 for the 49ers but made zero starts last year and appeared in only one game. He was limited by a hamstring injury in camp, which hurt his chances to impress new 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. But that doesn't fully explain why he played so few snaps and why the 49ers released him after the season. Last year the Raiders drafted Van Dyke in the third round out of Miami and Chekwa in the fourth out of Ohio State. Both are still raw, but Van Dyke appeared in 14 games and made four starts last year, while Chekwa played in only four games with one start. Of the two, Van Dyke has more speed but Chekwa is more physical. At cornerback in the NFL, speed trumps brawn. Advantage: Van Dyke.

Raiders Bubble Watch: RB Mike Goodson could be losing his backup job
By Eric Gilmore | CBSSports.com
August 24, 2012

Chimdi Chekwa (CB, 2nd year, made one start and appeared in four games as a rookie) -- The Raiders spent a fourth-round draft pick on Chekwa last year, but he missed most of the season with injuries and did not have an impressive offseason. Chekwa did intercept a pass against Arizona, but the Raiders could run out of room on the roster for him. CB Pat Lee, a free agent pickup from Green Bay, has had a strong camp. CB Bryan McCann's ability as a return man could earn him a job because the Raiders' top return men -- Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore -- are out with injuries. Chekwa's chances to survive might improve if fellow second-year CB DeMarcus Van Dyke continues to struggle.
