CB Chimdi Chekwa (Official Thread)

You guys said he ran a sub-4.40 fourty?

The NFL.com/combine site is reporting it as a 4.40 flat.

The NFL Network reported an unofficial 4.33 when he ran it live, but it was later changed to the official 4.40.

Either way, Chimdi made some money today.

edit: If he can just work on ball recognition and training himself to not be so wide in his cuts.
I mean, he has some pretty long legs. In this case its something of a harmful thing. He does take a while to readjust and turn around.
If he focuses on limiting his steps and not wasting motion, I'd love to have him in Cleveland.

2011 NFL Draft Prospect Profile: Chimdi Chekwa, CB, Ohio State

Let's continue our 2011 NFL Draft prospect profile series with a guy who possesses one of the traits General Manager Jerry Reese acknowledged that the New York Giants would like to have more of -- speed. Offense, defense, special teams -- speed can't taught. It is never most important when judging any individual player, but it will always get your attention.

That is why the subject of today's profile, Ohio State cornerback Chimdi Chekwa, is so intriguing. Chekwa ran a 4.40 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, among the 10 fastest times posted. The Giants, in fact all NFL teams, are looking for corners who can run with and cover the plethora of wide receivers NFL offenses use these days. So, Chekwa's speed will likely get him drafted on the second day of the NFL's three-day draft this April.

Scouting reports after the jump.

Chimdi Chekwa
CB, Ohio State
6-foot, 190 pounds
Projection: Round 2 or 3
Scouting Reports

From National Football Post:

Possesses good overall size and athletic ability for the position and has the type of second gear to make up for a high transition vertically. Gets a bit upright and leggy out of his turn and will lose a step, but displays above-average fluidity when asked to turn and run. Looks a lot more natural in the trail technique, where he can use his natural athleticism to simply try to mirror underneath. Can be physical off the line when asked to press, but is inconsistent Will get overextended at times and lose balance into contact, but when he gets his hands on you he can consistently re-route.

Improved his overall ball awareness down the field as a senior and did a much better job making plays on the football in all areas of the game. Doesn't tackle as well as his frame would indicate either and isn't overly willing to play the run game.

Impression: Will get overdrafted because of his size/speed numbers. Improved his overall feel for the game as a senior and can certainly run and make up for a false step, but is still raw in most areas of the game.

From CBS Sports:

Read & React: Reads the quarterback's eyes and reacts quickly to the ball in the air. Often involved in plays after coming off his man because he's looking into the backfield, but will also get beat when falling for pump fakes and double moves because of his aggressiveness.

Man Coverage: Has quick feet and fluid hips to stay with most receivers throughout most routes. Smooth, quick pedal when not in press-bail, patient waiting for his man to make the first move off the line.

Zone Coverage: Could excel as a zone corner because of his toughness, change-of-direction ability and quickness to the ball. Reads routes and the eyes of the quarterback and comes off his man to pick up the underneath out route and makes a play on the ball. Able to bring down receivers quickly after the catch.

Closing/Recovery: Excellent closing speed to make tackles or get to the receiver while the ball is in the air.

Run Support: Should be capable of chopping down running backs at the next level, but won't be a superstar in this part of his game. Gives good effort to shed receiver's blocks but is more effective using his speed and instincts to beat them.

Tackling: Is not a physically imposing cornerback, with thin legs and arms, but has the length and tenacity to wrap and drag down most receivers after the catch.

Intangibles: Tough corner with the confidence to come back and make a good play after giving up a touchdown.

From NFL.com:

Chekwa lacks the measurables to line up against a number one receiver in the NFL, but he has the skills to develop into an effective corner in sub packages. He is a smooth athlete that shows the hip fluidity to be solid in both man and zone coverage. He also flashes the ability to close quickly and break up passes on underneath routes. He does not have the explosiveness to mirror faster receivers and takes too long to fill in run support despite being a willing tackler. Overall, Chekwa is fluid enough to cover slot receivers and should be a Day 3 pick.

2011 combine workout: Chimdi Chekwa - NFL Network

Cornerback Chimdi Chekwa didn't run today after running an official 4.40 at the NFL combine, joking that he was tempted to do it but was advised by his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to let his time stand. Chekwa is still recovering from the wrist surgery he required after the Sugar Bowl but did everything in the cornerback position drills other than catch the ball.

Ohio State's Chimdi Chekwa counting on a late rush of Buckeyes in next week's NFL Draft

His speed and experience playing big-time college receivers -- here knocking away a pass intended for Miami's Travis Benjamin -- may have elevated NFL scouts' opinion on OSU cornerback Chimdi Chekwa.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Chimdi Chekwa has turned heads with his speed. Now the former Ohio State cornerback is in a race to see who will be the second Buckeye taken in the NFL Draft, and on what day that pick will come.

Defensive lineman Cameron Heyward is the only Buckeye assured to go in the first three rounds during the first two days of the draft -- the first round will be conducted in primetime on Thursday, April 28, and the second and third rounds following on Friday, April 29. Heyward to the Green Bay Packers with the 32nd and final pick of the first round has become a popular mock draft choice of late.

Then should come a gap. Then a rush.

Chekwa said Tuesday that he's hoping to sneak into the second round. ESPN analyst Mel Kiper has Chekwa as the No. 81 overall pick, to Oakland in third round, with linebacker Ross Homan projected as the 85th pick to Philadelphia.

But there's also the possibility that none of the Buckeyes after Heyward will go until the fourth round. That's how ESPN's Todd McShay sees it. That means on the last day of the draft, in the final 157 picks, as many as 10 -- or 6.4 percent of Saturday's choices -- could be Buckeyes.

"There's a possibility about 10 of us going, and a very strong possibility of eight of us," Chekwa said Tuesday.

East Ridge graduate Chekwa expected to be picked in NFL Draft
April 28, 2011

Ohio State's Chimdi Chekwa, a 2006 graduate of East Ridge High School in Clermont, no doubt will be on pins and needles when the NFL Draft gets under way tonight.

ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper predicts Chekwa, a star Buckeyes cornerback, will be picked in the third round by the Oakland Raiders with the overall 89th pick. A Cleveland Plain Dealer article posted on the newspaper's website last week said Chekwa "has turned heads with his speed" and that he is hoping "to sneak into the second round." NFL.com calls Chekwa "a smooth athlete that shows the hip fluidity to be solid in both man and zone coverage. He also flashes the ability to close quickly and break up passes on underneath routes. ?Overall, Chekwa is fluid enough to cover slot receivers and should be a Day 3 pick." The first round will be held starting at 8 p.m. today at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, followed by rounds two and three at 6 p.m. Friday and rounds 4-7 at noon Saturday.

Do these guys have any idea what they're talking about?

Nope, they have all learned about 20 to 30 phrases that sound "football-y" that they use over and over to sound smart. Stiff (or fluid) hips, low center of gravity, good separation, read run react, ect. ect. (I can't think of any more because I don't watch the coverage).

They're all morons that get paid to watch 30 seconds of highlights and use words and phrases that make it seem like they have studied the players and know football things.

The real trick is to say at least one negative thing and one positive thing once the player gets drafted. That way, no matter what happens during his career they can play sound bites that prove they called it (have you ever seen the highlights of them saying Tom Brady throws a "catchable ball", they show it constantly to prove the late picks can be valuable... what the fuck does that even mean?).

Chimdi Chekwa

Buckeye cornerback Chekwa's 4.4-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine was tied for the eighth-fastest overall time. This speed could make Chekwa the highest OSU player selected after Cameron Heyward. Walterfootball.com plugs him in the third round in its mock draft, but Pro Football Weekly warns that he "could be overdrafted by a team in search of elite speed."

Chekwa's wrist surgery following the Sugar Bowl may cause him to slip into the later rounds. The 6-foot-1, 191-pounder said he understands teams will be concerned with his wrist.

"I think all teams, they have to look into it," Chekwa said after Pro Day workouts March 11. "You have to see when I'll be back."
