CB Chimdi Chekwa (Official Thread)

Go figure the second Chimdi goes out EMU attacks the new corners. I mean they abused Corey Brown, and Dominic Clarke. They didn't attack Torrence much besides on the two deeps balls (one pass INT and another was caught). Without our anchor in the secondary we REALLY struggled though today, and that was against a poor offense. We better stay healthy that's all I gata say.

yea we learned how important he is. i think this maybe the most talented team in terms of starters we have had in maybe the jim tressel era. however i don't believe we are very deep esp in the secondary (yet, got a lot of youngins) just gotta avoid the injury bug for our dream season!

I think our starters like you said are awesome, but the depth on the Line and in the back end are concerning,

I suppose that's what happens when Gibson goes pro early, and then Keith Wells Transfers. If we had those two we'd be that much more effective.

Wells will be back next year. Making academic progress at Columbus State I believe.

The line has good depth except for LEO. Thomas just doesn't look like he's ready for the game mentally.

Corners

Give EMU's quarterback some credit man. He stayed in the pocket and take big hits while throwing strikes. some of which was well covered.

:oh:

EMU is an awful football team by FBS standards, but not because of their offense. Their offense is actually pretty decent this year, and their quarterback got rid of several balls a millisecond before getting hammered and they were still pin-point accurate. Sometimes the other team just makes plays. Sure, it would have been more difficult to make those plays with our starters out there... Hopefully the Bucks can get healthy and stay that way for the stretch run.

I'm glad they found a pimple in this game. Hey how are young guys supposed to improve if they don't play. It was good experience for these guys. IIRC Howard did not play. We are banged up. Remember once they made the adjustment of moving the safety back EMU did nothing.

It's quite significant for a CB to make the list of 16 Bednarik semifinalists, since all defensive players are eligible for that award.

Congrats to Chimdi, who is having an excellent senior season.

A native of Clermont, Fla., Chekwa is tied for second in the Big Ten with three interceptions in 2010. He recorded two in the win over No. 12 Miami (FL) back in September when he also broke up two pass attempts and recorded six tackles, including one for a loss. He is coming off one of his best games of the season at Minnesota where he recorded an interception and had one sack that caused a fumble and led to a John Simon touchdown late in the game. On the season, Chekwa has 28 tackles (22 solo), 4.0 TFL, 1.0 sack, two forced fumbles, three picks and five pass break-ups.

Speaking of Buckeye prospects, CB Chimdi Chekwa is going to need to play in more of a press-scheme at the next level where he can use his physicality to get his hands on receivers off the line. The guy gets way too high and choppy with his footwork in his drop when asked to play in off/zone and simply wastes too much motion trying to regain his balance and click and close on the football in front of him. He also still gets high in his transition when asked to turn and run down the field as well, but he at least has the type of make-up speed to give himself a chance to make a play vertically. However, I still have some questions about the guy?s ball skills and ability to locate the football quickly down the field, which still make me very leery concerning his potential to start on the outside in the NFL.

Ohio State spotlight: Chimdi Chekwa, CB

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The intensity of The Game can make momentary enemies out of lifetime friends, even among players from as far away as Florida, as Ohio State cornerback Chimdi Chekwa found out last year.

"There's going to be a lot of talking, and it happens," Chekwa said. "I had kind of a scuffle with Greg Matthews last year, a guy I played against in high school and am friends with. There is a lot of emotion flying around, and stuff happens sometimes."

Matthews, a receiver, has since moved on, but Chekwa is back for his fourth and final Ohio State-Michigan game today. No one has to do any talking to tell him about the challenges he and fellow senior corner Devon Torrence face in checking the Michigan receivers today - the run-happy Wolverines stunned Illinois with a deep pass for a touchdown on the first play of a 67-65 win a few weeks ago. But the defensive backs also must keep an eye out for speedy quarterback Denard Robinson.

"From the cornerback position, I hope he doesn't break (through the first lines of defense) so I don't have to chase him down," Chekwa said. "But if he starts getting the big plays running the ball, then I have to be aware of keeping him contained, not letting him break down the sideline - a whole bunch of different things.

"So it really depends on what happens up front, whether they can get after him. That makes my job a lot easier."

Chekwa said he will enter with confidence, even though he is coming off a game at Iowa last week in which he was twice called for pass interference.

"Stuff happens in a game, I understand that. Receivers are going to make plays, penalties are going to be called," Chekwa said. "I was back (confidence-wise) right after those plays happened. I'll be fine."
