CB Chimdi Chekwa (Official Thread)

I've read numerous reports on how Chekwa and Torrence just aren't consistent and will not be good NFL corners. I have to wonder why in the last few months there have been as many NFL scouting and draft-potential articles on these two as there have been (especially on Chekwa) if the scouts all seem to agree that they are not NFL starters.

Almost all the articles I've seen have been negative, almost to the extreme, about them. Perhaps these "scouts" see more positive than they actually report so they keep coming back to them. Or they are idiots...

I like them in the Buckeye secondary and think they do a solid job. Neither of them are Winfield/Springs, but that just doesn't happen very often.

As we say about Mel Kiper and Todd McShay: anybody worth a damn at scouting is working in the NFL, not writing for some blog. The same applies to this guy. In summary, credentials please:

Uh, pass.

I thought it was pretty good analysis though...Chimdi doesn't look very fluid and gets beat over the top pretty consistently. He's certainly a future NFL player, but I'd have a lot of trouble saying he can be a starter on an island in the NFL. I think he's more of a nickel back and thick he can excel in the slot.

I think if Devon had committed to football early on he'd be a bit more instinctive and maybe more fluid. He'll also be drafted.

I just don't think either of these guys are first or second round picks. They're both going to put up nice stats this year b/c of the front seven in front of them. I like that Chimdi has gotten more physical in run support, and Devon has never lacked that physicality.

In all, I thought it was fair and accurate. Not taking away from Chimdi's awards this week, but his interceptions against Miami aren't the type of plays that will shoot him up the draft boards. It isn't as though he made a crazy break on the ball and took it to the house...JMO.

Completely disagree with that. That would be his strength, IMO. His weakness is turning his head around for the ball.

This.

Numerous times you see Chimdi in the pocket of his receiver but he fails to turn his head and locate the ball, resulting in PI. Like clockwork. He can turn and run with anybody.

@ 6:50 for the 1st INT. You can see his hesitation and him looking back at the QB. Now I'm willing to let this one go because its zone and what he's doing is right, but how many false steps does Chimdi take? Maybe I'm a bit inaccurate at saying he doesn't have fluid hips, but he does have a fairly alarming amount of wasted motion in coverage.

Now, Chekwa does do a pretty good job at shedding blocks. But on that first pass to Hankerson (when Barnett crushed him) He beat Chimdi bad to the inside.

The play I'm talking about is @ 58 seconds.

He's looking inside, and gets beat on a small double move - he just doesn't get out of his backpedal very well and has a tendency to open his hips and run a bit early.

Ehh...he gets beat downfield quite a bit. Twice against Miami...

Hankerson had his way with Chimdi on the play Barnett laid Hankerson out. Check that play out, and watch him change direction....it wasn't pretty.

But any player can look bad on one play...overall though, the guys assesement is pretty fair. Chimdi will be drafted, he's just not first/second round potential. There are quite a few corners out there with enough skill to be considered better prospects than Chimdi.

Agree...Chimdi is pretty darn fast. I can remember seeing him flying down the field on plays early in his career and blowing by other guys trying to catch someone. He was a sprinter during indoor track season at OSU. The dude just has to learn to get his head around and locate the ball.

On that play, they were in cover 3. Chimdi has deep 3rd responsibilities, his job was to squeeze the WR into the middle of the field, which he did. Now, Hankerson had his way with him going the other way and Harris just over threw him, it was 6 easily. But I think Hankerson is a very good WR. He just hasn't been developed by the coaching staff.

Sorry if I gave the impression that I disagreed with this guy. I actually don't have any idea nor do I care. I'm just pointing out that the scouting analysis of <random jerkoff X> on <blog Y> is rarely worth a shit, particularly when it comes to evaluating guys for the NFL. We've seen this over and over again. Maybe our CBs are really terrible, I don't know. But I also strongly doubt that this guy does, either.

yea poor announcing awareness. i was wondering where the hell a lot of our players were....

i just saw chimdi on the sideline and was like what...... is he in the doghouse or something? same with stoneburner

I rag on tv announcers and analysts all the time(rightfully so) but that play by play guy is one of the worst I've seen do a tOSU game. Just completely clueless.
