CB Ashton Youboty (CB Coach Purdue)

anyways. back to Youboty. I'd like to see the Browns take him. Not because he's a buckeye but because he's an NFL CB with "some" starting experience who has the potential to produce(especially for a coordinator who now has a track record in getting decent play out of unproven guys).
Do the Bills need a blocking TE or FB if so perhaps the Browns and Bills could work something out for Ashton.

Hopefully the Bills need something we have. I'm not sure about TE though because yeah we have Winslow but Heiden is coming off a major surgery. Not sure what we have that they'd be willing to give up their 3rd round pick from 2-3 years ago.

Question #5: Who will start at right cornerback?
by Chris Brown, Lead Journalist Last Updated: 7/17/2008

After the free agent departure of Nate Clements in 2007 this was a legitimate question about a position that was manned by an entrenched starter for the better part of six seasons. One season later the Bills again have to address this question again. And though more than one of the current candidates for the role manned it in a starting capacity last season, the new additions have made for a stiff competition come training camp.

Two of main candidates for the role were part of the competition last season. Jabari Greer and Ashton Youboty however, were both outperformed by Jason Webster who landed the starting role coming out of training camp.

The forgotten man in this competition is Ashton Youboty, who has been unable to take significant strides with his game due to off the field circumstances and injuries. But Youboty was flashing ability again in the spring practices. The only problem was those flashes didn't surface as often as the plays that were turned in by Greer and McKelvin.

"I've seen a difference in all of them," said Fewell. "I just sense that Jabari stepped up a little bit more than Ashton in the spring. It will tell more in the fall, but I really like what we have in our secondary right now."

Youboty knows this is an important camp for him and is eager to show in year three that he has something legitimate to offer despite all the new cornerback blood on hand.

"All the guys on this level are good at what they do," said Youboty assessing his competition. "So it's all about working on what you can do to better yourself and let the coaches make the decisions after that. Anybody can go out there and win a starting position. That's part of this league and I'm looking forward to training camp."

In all likelihood though the race for the job will eventually be whittled down to Greer and McKelvin, and the incumbent says he'll be ready.

Everybody?s in front of Bills? Youboty
Wednesday, July 23, 2008 | Posted by Anthony Bialy

The top answer to the ?Family Feud? survey question ?Name a Bills cornerback? would be Terrence McGee, followed by the agreeably surprising Jabari Greer, prominent draftee Leodis McKelvin, free agent pickup Will James, and finally late-round rookies Reggie Corner and Kennard Cox. Meanwhile, responding with Ashton Youboty?s name would earn you an X and no smooch from whoever is trying to do Richard Dawson?s job. Youboty?s career in Buffalo is on the line this summer, as both the team?s quality and quantity at the position have made him forgettable.

The rough fact is that Youboty, a third-round pick from Ohio State in 2006, will have to beat out some of his more prominent teammates not just to play but to even be a Bill by September. Go ahead and write McGee?s name at the depth chart?s top in pen; so does the Liberia native have a chance to pass two of the corners presently ahead of him, something he?d have to do to get on the field at all? Realistically, topping the performance of just one of the following will be tough:

The Browns also remain interested in Buffalo's Ashton Youboty, the former Buckeye who knew Browns defensive coordinator Mel Tucker when they were together at OSU in 2003-04. The Browns hope to get a younger cornerback who may have fallen out of favor with his team and give him a fresh start and see if he can help as a backup. Youboty is only 24.

PITTSFORD ? The look Ashton Youboty gives you when you ask the question is one of incredulity, and given all that the 24-year-old Buffalo Bills cornerback has been through in the last 27 months, it is a look that surprises you.

So, Ashton, was there ever a point when you just looked to the sky and asked the big guy upstairs when the bad luck and the heartbreak and the misfortune were going to turn around for you?

You expect him to nod his head glumly and say something like "Yeah, how much more do I have to take?"

Instead, you get this the other day as Youboty walked off the practice field at St. John Fisher College:

"I wasn't getting down about anything," Youboty said, scoffing at the adversity he has endured in his two-plus years as a member of the Bills. "You can't get down or feel sorry for yourself because no one else is going to feel sorry for you."

Actually, that's not true.

His teammates certainly feel for him, particularly his close friend and fellow Ohio State alum, Donte Whitner, who joined the Bills in 2006 as a first-round draft pick, two rounds before Buffalo selected Youboty.

And Bills fans who know Youboty's story would have to be unfeeling robots not to feel a tug at the heartstrings when reciting the history of Youboty's star-crossed tenure in Buffalo.

It began in April 2006 when Youboty firmly believed that he would be a first-round choice in the NFL Draft after leaving Ohio State as a junior, only to slip to Buffalo's pick in the third round, No. 70 overall.

"When we came into the league he was told he would be a first-round pick, and then you think that and you have your friends and family around and then have to sit there during the draft and wait, that's tough," said Whitner, who was the No. 8 overall pick.

"You second-guess yourself and doubt yourself and wonder if you should have come out. You think 'Am I as good as I thought I was?'"

The Bills will probably keep five corners, and looking at the depth chart, you'd have to say the frontrunners are holdover starters Greer and Terrence McGee, plus James and first-round pick McKelvin. That leaves Youboty battling with Dustin Fox plus the two other 2008 draftees, Corner and Cox.

"He's starting to pick it up," said Whitner. "He's getting his hands on a lot of balls and the light is starting to come on. He's going to have to compete to make this team and he knows that. He's going to have to come out in the preseason games and prove that he belongs on this football team and let the best man win."

IT WAS also encouraging to see third-year cornerback Ashton Youboty show some fire.

There was a creeping suspicion that the former third-round draft choice from Ohio State was soft and a bit injury prone and that there was a very real possibility he wouldn't make this year's roster.

But his interception off former Bill Todd Collins and inspired and aggressive run support seemed to indicate he's gotten the message.

Youboty impressive in his surprise start
By Allen Wilson -- News Sports Reporter
Updated: 08/11/08

Terrence McGee?s ankle injury gave Ashton Youboty ample opportunity to make a favorable impression at cornerback.

With McGee scratched just before kickoff, Youboty started for the Buffalo Bills in their preseason opener against the Washington Redskins.

Youboty, who is battling several young cornerbacks for a spot on the roster, helped his cause Saturday.

Playing most of the game, Youboty had an interception late in the first half that set up the Bills? only touchdown of the night. He also played well in pass coverage and registered eight tackles (seven solo), second on the team behind safety John Wendling.

?It was unexpected,? Youboty said of his starting nod. ?It was a last minute decision by the coaches and I just went out there and did my thing like it was practice.?

Youboty has been having a good training camp, raising his level of play amid heavy competition. With McGee, Jabari Greer, Will James, first-round draft pick Leodis McKelvin and sometimes rookie Reggie Corner ahead of him on the depth chart, he needs a strong preseason to retain a roster spot.

More games like Saturday will convince the coaches he should stick around.

?I thought it was a good night for Ashton,? head coach Dick Jauron said. ?It was good that we got to see him, and he showed up. He made his presence felt. That?s generally how he?s played. He has up-and-down plays, but when Ashton gets a chance to make a play, he usually makes it.?

But there were also some disappointments.

Steelers' QB Ben Roethlisberger connected for a 40-yard touchdown to Holmes who abused cornerback Ashton Youboty like a rental car.

Youboty, whose roster spot could be in jeopardy with Terrence McGee, Jabari Greer and first round draft choice Leodis McKelvin ahead of him and veteran William James and fourth-round pick Reggie Corner pushing from behind, has had a decent camp.

He even had an interception at Washington and late in last night's game got a sack while being credited with a team-high four tackles playing with the reserves.

Still against Holmes, one of the NFL's promising young wideouts, he looked bad.

ASHTON GOT PUNK?D: Pittsburgh?s Santonio Holmes found himself exceptionally open on a 40-yard touchdown grab in Thursday?s preseason game, and some viewers didn?t know which Buffalo defender to blame.

Ashton Youboty was covering his former Ohio State teammate when the play started, and George Wilson was closest to Holmes in the end zone. It seemed as though the Bills might?ve been in a Cover-2 zone that would?ve called for Youboty to abandon the receiver if he went deep, and trust that a safety would prevent a long pass.

Apparently, the coverage breakdown was Youboty?s fault, according to his position coach, George Catavolos.

?That?s mostly his responsibility,? Catavolos said Sunday. ?He was guessing on it, instead of playing his normal technique. That usually does not happen to him.?

Youboty, a former third-round pick entering his third season, was making a strong case to be included on the final roster prior to that play, notably intercepting a pass in the preseason opener against Washington.
