CB Ashton Youboty (CB Coach Purdue)

A costly win for Buffalo
Youboty, Harrison, Leonhard exit with injuries for Bills

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- The Buffalo Bills' first win of the season also came at a cost: more injuries.

Cornerback Ashton Youboty's status is uncertain after he twisted his ankle in the first quarter of a 17-14 win over the New York Jets on Sunday.

Youboty was starting in place of Jason Webster, who's out for the season with a broken forearm. Youboty was hurt after absorbing a block by Jets offensive tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson on a screen pass to Laveranues Coles.

He limped off the field on his own, and was lightly jogging along the sideline before heading to the tunnel when the second quarter began. Jabari Greer replaced Youboty.

McGee and Greer both are much more comfortable outside than on the slot. Ashton Youboty has worked more on the outside, too. He has been nagged by injuries this year, and the coaches aren?t quite confident enough in him yet.

?An option is to go to Ashton,? Fewell said. ?We think he can possibly help us and do some things in there. But we?re still sort of matching and seeing who does what well. . . . Because of the nagging injuries and this and that, he hasn?t developed as well as we?d like for him to develop. He hasn?t gotten the reps in practice and done the things to earn our confidence [yet].?

Ashton Youboty
Year Two of the Youboty Experiment is in the books, and as of yet, the former third-round pick has not been able to lock down sufficient playing time. Injuries, family tragedies and a steep learning curve have kept Youboty on the sidelines; when he has been on the field, he has often looked lost. However, he still shows flashes of potential - his interception of Donovan McNabb in the season finale being the obvious example. He's got the makeup to play the position; with an off-season of diving into the playbook and getting stronger, he may surprise and steal Greer's starting spot back next season. Call that a very early gut feeling.

Will Improve in '08 if - he can stay healthy :: he gets stronger :: he refines his tackling technique :: the young man studies up

It's now or never for Bills' Youboty
Posted by: Connor Byrne on March 21, 2008

When the Buffalo Bills used a third-round pick in 2006 on former Ohio State cornerback Ashton Youboty, most viewed it as one of the draft's biggest steals. Considering Youboty's decorated career with the Buckeyes -- he was first-team All-Big Ten in his last season -- and the fact many draft gurus projected the Liberian-born defender as a late first-round pick, fans' optimism was certainly warranted.

Bills have market cornered
By The Associated Press
Tuesday, April 29, 2008

ORCHARD PARK - Buffalo head coach Dick Jauron wasn't kidding when he indicated a team can't have enough cornerbacks.
Starting with first-round pick Leodis McKelvin, the Bills used three of their 10 draft picks on cornerbacks last weekend to retool what had been a ragtag defensive backfield last season.

?We needed numbers there,? chief operating officer Russ Brandon said following the Bills final selection on Sunday.

The three cornerbacks taken - rounded out by the aptly named Reggie Corner (114th) out of Akron, and Pittsburgh's Kennard Cox (251st) - allowed the Bills to restock a unit after the team cut Kiwaukee Thomas and elected not to re-sign Jason Webster this offseason.

It was also an indication that the Bills aren't convinced Ashton Youboty will develop into an NFL-caliber player.

Buffalo's third-round pick in 2006 out of Ohio State, Youboty was held out of all but three games in his rookie season, and showed few signs of progress last year. After starting two of Buffalo's first three games last season, Youboty missed the next five games with an ankle injury, and was unable to reclaim the starting job from Jabari Greer.

With McKelvin expected to immediately challenge Greer for the starting job opposite Terrence McGee, Youboty will have to compete with Corner and veteran free-agent addition William James for what's likely to be the team's final two spots.

Youboty in jeopardy on CB-heavy Bills
Friday, May 02, 2008 | Posted by Connor Byrne

After the Buffalo Bills signed cornerback Will James earlier in the offseason, it became apparent that two-year veteran Ashton Youboty was in jeopardy of making the roster in 2008. Sadly for the 2006 third-round pick, things only got worse last weekend.

That's because during the two-day NFL draft, the Bills selected a whopping three cornerbacks with their 10 picks. In the first round, the Bills chose former Troy University star Leodis McKelvin, then followed that up by grabbing the aptly named Reggie Corner (Round 4, Akron) and Kennard Cox (Round 7, Pittsburgh). When you add those three to a corps that already included incumbent starters Terrence McGee and Jabari Greer as well as James -- a six-year veteran -- and Dustin Fox, something's gotta give.

Yes, Buffalo's Ashton Youboty is a possibility. Buffalo has soured on the former Ohio State star, and the Bills have brought in veteran corner Will James and drafted three cornerbacks (including Akron's Reggie Corner). So he is available.

Can Youboty help? He's played in only 14 games in two pro seasons, and has not made much of an impact. He had the dreaded high-ankle sprain last season. In 2006, he had a rough rookie season as his mother died. He is only 23 and was a third-round pick in 2006. There was a feeling at OSU that he left school a year too early. He played for Browns defensive coordinator Mel Tucker at OSU, so Tucker will have a major say in how hard the Browns pursue him. Not speaking directly about Youboty, Savage said: "There is another Daven Holly out there, a guy another team has given up on him and can help us. We just have to find him."

Youboty update: The Browns have expressed interest in trading for Bills cornerback and former Ohio State star Ashton Youboty, but a source close to the Bills said Wednesday that Buffalo does not intend to trade Youboty at this time.

A third-year pro, Youboty is expected to be given a chance to battle it out in camp with the three cornerbacks the Bills drafted this year, including first-rounder Leodis McKelvin and fourth-rounder Reggie Corner from Akron. If they do decide to part with Youboty, they'd probably do so for a future pick. A third-round pick of the Bills in 2006, Youboty was coached by Browns offensive coordinator Mel Tucker at Ohio State. He fell out of favor in Buffalo after missing much of his rookie camp following the death of his mother and then suffered a high ankle sprain last year.
