Five Bills to keep an eye on

Cornerback Ashton Youboty ? There has been a lot of crabbing about the Bills not drafting a cornerback in April to replace the departed Nate Clements, but Youboty was the sixth cornerback taken in the 2006 draft and he has an impressive resume. He starred with Ohio State?s superb defenses, covered the best receivers in the Big Ten and each day in practice dealt with three Buckeyes who went on to become first-round draftees, Santonio Holmes, Ted Ginn Jr. and Anthony Gonzalez.

Bills searching for solution at cornerback
Webster among candidates to replace departed Clements
By Rodney McKissicNEWS SPORTS REPORTER

PITTSFORD ? Losing Nate Clements to free agency in the offseason made the right cornerback position a potential trouble spot for the Buffalo Bills, and even after completing the first week of training camp on Wednesday, questions remain.

Eight-year veteran Jason Webster has missed the last two practices with a leg injury, but the free-agent signee is the most likely candidate to replace Clements among a deep pool of Bills corners. The others include Kiwaukee Thomas, Ashton Youboty and Jabari Greer.

?Webster is ahead of those guys right now, but we need depth at that position,? Bills defensive backs coach George Catavolos said. ?Sixty percent of the time we?re going to be playing against three wide receivers and you need three quality corners to compete in our division.?

With his size and strength, Youboty?s versatility enables him to play either corner position. The only thing missing is experience. Drafted in the third round in 2006 out of Ohio State, Youboty missed the bulk of training camp last year following the death of his mother, Jeannet. He was inactive for the first nine games but made his first start against the New York Jets on Dec. 10.

?He?s very fluid,? Catavolos said. ?He just has to be more consistent.?

CB Ashton Youboty: If there's one player who has really, truly disappointed me through camp it's Ashton Youboty. When Jason Webster was healthy, Youboty was getting reps with the second unit defense on a rotational basis. Now, with Webster sidelined with a nagging injury, Youboty is losing reps to Jabari Greer, a player he clearly outstrips in talent. I know that Ashton is green, but he's getting outplayed by inferior players. This kid has a long way to go before he sees the field consistently.

So far, Bills' Youboty hasn't lived up to hype
By Connor Byrne on August 7, 2007 12:20 AM

At this point in camp, the 5-foot-11, 189-pound Youboty has stood out. Not in a good way, however. He was getting second-team reps behind seven-year veteran Jason Webster at the left corner position in the beginning of camp, then the latter went down with a hamstring injury; after, Youboty was still playing in a reserve role, this time behind former undrafted free agent Jabari Greer, a fourth-year man.

Now that Webster is healthy again, Youboty's uphill climb has become even more difficult. And when Youboty, whom many pegged as a first-round talent entering last year's draft, is struggling to jump over someone like Greer, who no team believed was worthy of any selection, there's an obvious problem.

Youboty Starting to Make Plays?
With Jason Webster and Kiwaukee Thomas entrenched as the #2 and #3 cornerbacks, and Jabari Greer making plays left and right, the pressure is on Ashton Youboty to make sure he doesn't become the fifth cornerback on the roster. He responded by making a few plays last night:

On the first play from scrimmage Youboty made a diving effort and may or may not have had an interception. The pass was low from J.P. Losman and Youboty had inside position on the receiver. In trying to make a play on the ball his hands appeared to be beneath the ball before it hit the turf, but it was difficult to say for sure.
The battle continued during 7-on-7 when Youboty jumped on a quick slant and came up with the interception off Trent Edwards.

Here's my view: the Saints have very good wideouts, even if they're a bit inexperienced. I am very anxious to see how Youboty performs tomorrow night, both in coverage and against the run. The team needs to find a way to get this kid playing time, but he needs to prove he deserves it first. Tomorrow is his first chance.

Terrence McGee, Jason Webster and Kiwaukee Thomas were all steady as the top three guys. They gave up some plays, but were rarely out of position and were quick to make tackles on most occasions. If the team can garner more of a pass rush, these guys will be alright.

The defensive star of the game was Jabari Greer, whose spectacular training camp carried over to this game in the form of two interceptions. His added muscle made him less of a liability as a tackler as well - it seemed that he had less trouble in run support than usual. I'd love to see this kid carry his solid play over to the regular season, something he's failed to do after strong training camps the past two years.

Ashton Youboty, as expected, was a bit inconsistent. He made some great plays, including a fantastic tackle as a punt gunner and a well-played reverse where he limited a long gain to 5 yards, but his coverage was just average. The kid certainly has potential, but he's being outclassed by Greer at this point. There's still a chance he'll earn some playing time.

Buffalo's Role Players Need to Shine

CB Ashton Youboty hasn't even cracked the nickel package yet, but that doesn't mean he won't get the opportunity. Youboty had a strong pre-season and it's pretty clear that the coaching staff would like to get him a more prominent role in the defense as soon as possible. Once he does, look out - he may end up being the physical presence at corner that the club desperately needs. He could be a very valuable addition to our starting unit by season's end.

Simspon, Webster Likely Out For The Season
Greg Bauch - Monday, September 10, 2007 - 2:16 PM

WGR550- The Bills will have an update on TE Kevin Everett at 4:30 this afternoon. WGR 550 will carry the press conference live. Bills Coach Dick Jauron says that Safety Ko Simpson and Cornerback Jason Webster both underwent surgery this afternoon. Simpson hurt his ankle in Sunday's loss to Denver. Webster fractured his forearm.

Jauron says that both Simpson and Webster are both likely to miss the rest of 2007.

Linebacker Coy Wire has a grade 2 sprain of the MCL in his knee. Jauron was not yet sure how long Wire will be sidelined.

Jim Leonhard will start in place of Ko Simpson.
Ashton Youboty replaced Webster at Cornerback. Jauron has confidence in Youboty:

"Ashton had a real good preseason for us so we're hoping that he keeps growing real fast. Clearly we have to do some things better than we did yesterday.

Youboty set to start

With all the attention paid to Everett?s injury, the team still had important work to tend to Wednesday. Defensive starters Jason Webster, Ko Simpson and Coy Wire (who was filling in for the injured Keith Ellison) are all out for Sunday?s game, meaning three new starters will enter the lineup. Ashton Youboty is one of those three, replacing Webster at cornerback.

?I?m looking forward to it,? Youboty said. ?I?ve been preparing myself since training camp.?

Also expected to start Sunday are John DiGiorgio at outside linebacker, in place of Wire, and Jim Leonhard at safety, in place of Simpson.
