CB Ashton Youboty (CB Coach Purdue)

Rookie Ashton Youboty, another Ohio State defensive back, suffered an ankle injury that was not considered to be serious at training camp today.

Was curious what was his undocumented injury from this past season, was that a hip injury or was it this same thing possibly?

He had a hip bothering him last season. Watch the Blocked field goal clip from the MSU game. At about the 20 yard line going in, you can see he's really hurting.

Bills CB Youboty primed to tackle every challenge

(August 10, 2006) — When he has a moment to himself, Ashton Youboty occasionally will let his mind wander and think about how life might have turned out if his family had not fled war-torn Liberia 18 years ago.
"I was only 4 at the time, so I don't have many memories," says the Bills' rookie cornerback.

"My mom will show me pictures of our relatives. Some of them no longer are with us because of the violence and starvation the war caused. I realize that could have been us, had the circumstances been different. It makes me appreciate the opportunities I have."
Back in 1988, about a year before a civil war broke out in the small country on the west coast of Africa, John and Jeannet Youboty gathered up their son and their possessions and flew across the Atlantic to the United States. They moved in with relatives in Philadelphia, before relocating to suburban Houston when Ashton was in the eighth grade.
A gifted athlete, the younger Youboty excelled in football and track.

Ohio State, which mass-produces quality cornerbacks, offered a football scholarship, and Youboty accepted.
It took him a while to adapt to big-time college football, but he eventually did, starting 21 consecutive games in his junior and senior years. The 5-foot-11, 189-pounder developed into a shut-down corner during the second half of last season. He finished fourth among the Buckeyes in tackles (56) and also broke up nine passes, made one interception and was named first-team All-Big Ten.
Buffalo chose him in the third round in April, and some draft experts believe the Bills got a steal, because like their first-round pick — fellow Buckeye defensive back Donte Whitner — Youboty has first-round talent.
Unlike Whitner, Youboty finalized his contract before training camp, signing a four-year deal for a reported $2.75million.

"I wanted to get in here from Day One, so I'd be able to get a grasp of the defense," Youboty says. "Unfortunately, I wound up being sidelined right away."
Two days into camp, he pulled his right hamstring, and he was held out of action until Tuesday night.

He has been going at it full bore since returning. He broke up a couple of passes Tuesday afternoon, including a 50-yard bomb intended for wide receiver Lee Evans.
"It feels great to be out there again," Youboty says. "I was feeling like a bench-warmer there for a while. It hurt, not being able to play."

The down time impeded his progress, but Youboty still is in the mix for the third cornerback spot behind Nate Clements and Terrence McGee. His main competition for playing time will come from Jabari Greer and Eric King. A skilled kick-blocker and returner both in high school and in college, Youboty is sure to see time on special teams.
"Ashton is a very aggressive, very intense guy," says Bills defensive backs coach George Catavolos. "Sure, the injury set him back a bit, so we are going to have to play a little catch-up with him. But he has plenty of time to show us what he's got."
Though playing time hasn't been allotted for the Bills' exhibition season opener Saturday night on the road against the Carolina Panthers, Catavolos expects Youboty to be out there for at least 20 plays.
That's fine with the young cornerback, who is overjoyed to be back out on the field.

He's aware of the success former Ohio State corners Nate Clements and Antoine Winfield have enjoyed with the Bills, and he would love to be reunited with Buckeye teammate Whitner in an NFL secondary.
"I've got a long way to go," he says. "I'm still getting my feet wet, trying to learn the pro game."

And if he does realize his goal and becomes one of the NFL's top cover men, he will attempt to realize other dreams. Among them: frequent return visits to his native land and the establishment of a foundation that helps young people there realize their dreams. "Things are stabilizing over there, but it will take a lot of time to rebuild what has been ruined," he says. "I know my mom wants to return one day. And I'd like to visit, too, and see how I can help to make things better. But that's way down the road. I have to establish myself here first before any of that can happen."

AUTOGRAPHS: Signing autographs after every practice is definitely something new for me. At some point during the season at Ohio State we had a day that the entire team signed autographs but it was nothing like what I’m experiencing at camp this year.
I’m not used to the fans screaming my name asking for my autographs but I’m getting used to it. It’s a good feeling.
CAROLINA: I’m looking forward to the preseason game in Carolina this weekend. The coaches haven’t given me any indication on how much I might play but I have a feeling that I might end up playing a lot since I haven’t been practicing for a week. They are trying to make me catch up. I’m looking forward to it and I’m sure it will be fun.
JERSEY NUMBER: Fans have been asking about the number I’m wearing – number 38. I didn’t have a choice, it was picked for me. I’m trying to get 26 from Rashad Baker but we’ll see what happens. I’m not sure if I can broker the same type of deal Donte worked out with Shaud. I’m not sure I can afford that. I’m just a third round pick trying to make the team. I’ll go from there.
Take care

So far life in the NFL isn’t much different than college. We still wake up early. I guess the big difference is what you see on the field. The players are bigger, they know their assignments and there aren’t many mistakes on the field. It’s a profession so they take it much more seriously.
It was definitely a disappointment that I wasn’t drafted higher, you always have high hopes. However, I still have the opportunity to play with the Bills. I’m in the NFL and that was my ultimate goal and I’m trying to make the best of it. That’s all I can do right now. I think I’ve proven a lot already. My teammates and coaches are looking for me to produce on the field and that’s what I’m planning to do.
Since the draft everything has gone so fast. It all didn’t kick in until I got here at St. John Fisher that I was in the NFL. I went through my first parade sitting on the back of a car. It was a crazy experience, something that I’ve never done before.
I really have been trying to settle in, meet my teammates and meet the coaches but I have found out that once you get to camp you understand the profession and you start to live that life.
All the veterans have helped me a lot, telling me little things that I’m doing wrong and how I can improve.
The Bills defense is definitely different than the defense I played in at Ohio State. Ohio State had a good system and it was something to learn from, I think it will help me in this system.
I feel like I have made progress with the playbook. I had the chance to come to a couple of mini-camps during the offseason and I learned a lot there but the coaching staff is still installing new plays so I have to stay up with the pace.
Donte calls me every night to see what we have installed. He has asked me what we’ve done and what we’ve been missing and I just tell him. I tell him to get his butt up here. He’s a man and he’ll make his own decisions and I know he’ll make the right one. He’s a fast learner but it’s a lot to learn so it will take time for him to catch up.
Missing practice is huge and Donte understands that. I can’t really speak for him. He feels he needs to be here but he feels he’s doing what’s right for him and I believe he’ll make the right decision whenever it comes.
I’ve been held back myself with an injury and I’m anxious to get back on the field. I have been able to sit back and see how these receivers run routes but there is nothing to substitute actually being on the field so I’m anxious to get back out there.
I’m trying to get back as soon as possible and the trainers will let me know when I’m ready.

BILLS ROOKIE REVIEW: Youboty? Youbetcha! Bills like OSU rookie
By Jay Skurski
Greater Niagara Newspapers
PITTSFORD — It seems as far as the Buffalo Bills are concerned, you can never get enough of a good thing.

That would explain why the team continues to raid the backfield of The Ohio State University. In the past few years, the school has produced NFL cornerbacks Shawn Springs, Ahmed Plummer and Chris Gamble not to mention former and current Bills’ Antoine Winfield and Nate Clements.

Ashton Youboty hopes to be next in line. The 22-year old native of Liberia joined his college teammate, strong safety Donte Whitner, in the professional ranks when the Bills selected him in the third round (70th overall) in April’s NFL Draft.

“Since the draft, everything’s just gone fast,” Youboty said. “You’re trying to settle in, but once you get here, it all gets serious.”

A hamstring injury on the second day of camp slowed Youboty’s progress, as did the fact he missed several minicamp sessions in the spring because of Ohio State’s relatively late final exam schedule.

“He has to have the practices and get in with the system,” defensive backs George Catavolos said.

Youboty has a wealth of experience to learn from in the Bills secondary. Clements is Buffalo’s highest-paid player and a former Pro-Bowler, as is fellow cornerback starter Terrence McGee.

“It’s not just Nate, all the veterans up here have helped me out a lot,” Youboty said.

Youboty clearly has some catching up to do if he hopes to see extensive playing time in 2006. With Clements and McGee set as the starters, there will likely be three backup jobs. Third-year man Jabari Greer and second-year pro Eric King have engaged in a good battle for the third cornerback job, meaning Youboty will likely be the fifth corner.

Things may change after this season, though. Clements will become an unrestricted free agent, which could open significant playing time.

At the time of the draft, Youboty was touted as a potential late first-round pick.

“It was definitely a disappointment, you have high hopes,” he said of falling to the third round. “But I have the opportunity to play with the Bills. I’m in the NFL, and that’s my ultimate goal. I’m here and I’m trying to make the best of it.”

During his collegiate career with the Buckeyes, Youboty made 131 tackles and recorded two sacks. He was named to the first-team All-Big Ten team in 2005.

The relative that passed away works at the same place my wife does. It's my wife's understanding that it was Ashton's mother. She had been battling cancer for sometime now. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Youboty family.

Bills' rookie Youboty still on bereavement leave

Sal Maiorana
Staff writer

August 23, 2006 2:22 pm — Buffalo Bills rookie cornerback Ashton Youboty remains out of camp and is back home with his family grieving over the death of his mother.

Youboty left the team late last week and did not play in the Cincinnati game, and Bills coach Dick Jauron said the team's third-round draft pick probably won't be back in time to play Saturday against Cleveland.
"I'm a little reluctant to give the details because I haven't talked to him about it, but there's a couple of services that they're going to have and he may not be back for a week,'' Jauron said. "That's a long time, but clearly we've got to support him and do what's in his best interests and then get him back here as quick as we can.''

Youboty had already missed training camp practice time with a hamstring injury, and his prolonged absence is setting him back even further. However, as a third-round draft pick his status with the team is probably safe.

The Bills have been without rookie CB Ashton Youboty for two weeks as he continues to mourn the death of his mother, Jeannet. Youboty was born in Liberia and moved to the United States with his family when he was four. He grew up in Klein, Texas. "That's been a real tough one, obviously for him and his family," coach Dick Jauron said. "We're just trying to be as supportive as we can. But knowing that we are going to be part of his support system, we'd like to get him back and get him into it. I don't know if your mind will ever get far from that issue, but get him focused on something else and back to work."

Youboty back with the Bills
By John Wawrow
Associated Press
ORCHARD PARK ? Rookie cornerback Ashton Youboty rejoined the Buffalo Bills for practice Wednesday, ready to refocus on his career after spending the past three weeks with family following his mother?s death.

?Being out on the field, at least I have other things to think about and get the memories out,? said Youboty, Buffalo?s third-round draft pick out of Ohio State. ?I know if she was here, she?d want me to go on and perfect my career and do the best I can. And that?s what I?m trying to do.?

Jeannet Youboty was battling cancer when she died on Aug. 17 in Houston.

The eldest of four children, Ashton Youboty had been excused from the Bills to make funeral arrangements and to make sure his siblings are taken care of. Among his decisions was having one of his two brothers move to Buffalo to live with him and attend Erie County Community College.

Youboty thanked the Bills for their patience and understanding.

?They let me know just to take my time. Whenever I?m ready to join the team, they?ll have open arms,? Youboty said, adding he was pleased to have made the team?s final cut last weekend. ?I?m right here where I am and ready to start helping the Bills.?

Youboty has a lot of catching up to do and it?s not clear when he?ll be ready to make his NFL debut. Coach Dick Jauron said Youboty will be among his inactive players for Buffalo?s regular-season opener at New England on Sunday.

?It?s great to have him back, I believe for him and for us,? Jauron said. ?From a football side of it, now we just need to get him back into the learning. We need to get him back in shape and back into the scheme of things. And it?ll take a while.?

Jauron added the team has offered to assist Youboty with his and his family?s personal needs.

?He?s got a lot of things on his shoulders for a young man, and we need to help him there, do as much as we can and as much as he needs at this time,? he said.

A two-year starter at Ohio State, Youboty showed signs of promise during the first three weeks of training camp. He appeared only in Buffalo?s preseason opener at Carolina, in which he was credited with one tackle and a pass defended.
