Cavs 09-10 Season (official thread)

Offense seems to be coming easy for the Cavs with Jamison in the starting lineup. It will be interesting to see how Mike Brown handles the second quarter rotations. Jamison and Lebron have been on the floor the whole game. I would like to see Jamison sit the end of the 1st so that he and Shaq can play the beginning of the 2nd when Lebron is on the bench.

Jamison again had the best plus/minus on the team for those criticizing the trade. 2nd game in a row.
Jamison is a great get...no doubt.

Mo Williams is a problem right now. Honestly, having him out there instead of Booby is hurting the team. The team was better with Booby, so hopefully he gets his act together. Mo was the one guy besides LeBron that could make things happen out of nothing offensively, but now Jamison can do that...and in some ways much better. Mo sucks defensively too, we all know that. Part of me would rather just see Booby in there. The line-up needs Shaq, LeBron, Jamison, and then 2 guys who can play great defense and hit 3s...and right now, Mo Williams is not doing it.

I also think that the Jamison trade still hurts some, because Andy isn't a good enough option at the 5 when Shaq is out. If Shaq could play 30-35 minutes, then I wouldn't care...but we need Z, plane and simple.

Our biggest concerns right now...Getting Z back, and getting Mo back to form, and if not, then finding somebody that can play. Right now I feel like JJ and Booby deserve more playing time...and until Mo shows me something more, maybe we can cut some minutes...maybe he's still hurting.

Don't get me wrong though, I love Mo...but he was piss-poor last year in the playoffs, and he's piss-poor right now.

Mo hasn't been playing well, but Lebron's shooting has been off since the All-Star break. He's still getting his points, but it's taking more shots to do it. He needs to focus more on going to the hoop rather than chucking up shots. A big difference in the game last night would have been if Lebron and Mo had hit their normal % of shots. The bad shots with long rebounds gave the Hornets a lot of fast breaks and put strain on the suspect defense. Hopefully they get everything figured out by tomorrow.

Hickson didn't even play. It'll be interesting to see what his role is on the team by the end of the season.

When Z comes back I doubt JJ or Powe will see much time. I would like to get Shaq back down to 20-25 minutes a game until the playoffs with Z taking 20 minutes at C. Andy would still get a small at C along with the backup PF minutes. Jamison will be playing 30-35 minutes a game and Lebron plays some at the 4 as well.
Once the playoffs arrive the rotation will be cut down to 8 or 9, but the team goes 12 deep with guys who deserve minutes. I think Boobie should also get some minutes, but that hasn't been the case. I would like to see a 4 man rotation at the guards with Mo (35) and West(30) seeing the most minutes with Parker and Boobie in the 15 to 20 minute range. It would be good to get Lebron down below 38 minutes for the rest of the season with Moon or Jawad (have to pick one and give him the minutes) filling in while he is on the bench. When Lebron is at the 4 you can fill in with either of the above or one of the guards.
I also think Brown needs to fix his rotations so that Mo, West, Jamison, and Shaq are on the floor when Lebron is on the bench. Get those guys rest when Lebron is on the floor. I still think Shaq should play the first 6 minutes of quarters 1-3 and then use him as they need him in the 4th. Lebron rests the first 4-6 minutes of the 2nd and 2-4 of the 4th.
The thing Mike Brown did well last year that he doesn't seem to be doing this year is a substitution pattern. He seems to be all over the place. Moon will play one game Jawad will play the next. Lebron will come out to start the 2nd quarter every once in a while and be on the bench most of the time. I have no idea what is going on with the guards. I guess the team has been in a state of flux with trades and injuries so hopefully he's figuring it out.
For the time being I think they need to give JJ or Powe most of the minutes Z will get so that the other guys can get in the substitution pattern and stay well rested.

hickson had stomach issues yesterday. he wasn't a scratch, but he wasn't going to play if they didn't need him to. he missed shoot around and pregame entirely. it wasn't necessarily a coach's decision DNP.

Good comments, I agree with all of this and want to add extra emphasis on the bold parts.

As to the last bold part, I feel strangely confident that Ferry and Mike Brown have a 'money ball'-like statistician on the staff. There are a number of reasons over the last year or two that all add up to this (that I won't go into now). A statistician can play a big part in evaluating how different lineups perform together but needs volume, and may explain why he's trying different rotations. An example of who the stat guy could be is this former blogger (go to the link for examples of what can be done with advanced NBA stats):

I've got good news and bad news. The good news is that I've accepted an offer to work for an NBA team doing statistical analysis along the lines of the work I've posted on this site. The bad news is that the future research I do will be just for that team and won't be something that I can publish and share with everyone.
So for the foreseeable future, I won't be posting any of my original basketball research on this blog. My old posts will still be here...

Thanks, did not realize that.

I don't know if you are trying to say that it may be him or that it may be someone with the same skill set, but....

Ilgauskas Set Free: Former Cavalier and current Wizards' center Zydrunas Ilgauskas reached terms on a contract buyout yesterday that could result in him being waived by Washington later today. Sources with knowledge of the deal say that Ilgauskas surrendered more than $1 million of the remaining $4.1 million owed him ($3.6 million in contract dollars plus a $600,000 trade bonus). Ilgauskas will have to clear the NBA waiver process which takes 48 hours, and then he will become an unrestricted free agent.

Several contending teams have made their interest in Ilgauskas known including Denver, Dallas and Atlanta.

Ilgauskas who returned to his Cleveland home after clearing his required physical, is said to be leaning towards a return to the Cavaliers, but would have to sit out 30-days from February 18th, when he was traded, making him eligible to return to the Cavs on or about March 20th.

Ilgauskas' agent Herb Rudoy has been telling reporters that Ilgauskas will consider his options this weekend and hopes to reach a decision soon.

A return to Cleveland would center around the team's remaining $1.9 million Bi-Annual salary cap exception ? all four suitors for Ilgauskas can offer the same exception based offers.

Darnell Jackson and Danny Green have been sent to the D-League. In and of its self I don't think that's a bad move. They need playing time somewhere, and they're not going to get it during the stretch run.

On a related note - while that move does not clear any roster spots for the Cavs, that's a move they'll have to make if they're going to bring back Z? Who do you think should go? I think it should be Telfair, but I don't see that happening. There's probably some kind of rule that would prevent that from happening anyway. It would definitely be down to those two guys, and my choice would have to be Jackson. I still think he can be a good player, but I haven't seen too much improvement from him. Plus, I think I like Green's potential at the guard position better.

jackson would be the odd man out. once jamison came aboard the writing was on the wall. with hickson developing nicely and AV being signed long term, he is certainly expendable.

besides, cleveland will probably buy a draft pick at some point to pick up a young center to groom to take over for shaq and z in about 2 years. or, they'll find a SG to do that with and use their MLE on a young center, which seems like a better option.
