Cavs 08-09 Season - Central Div Champs (official thread)

One thing to remember is that right now we're incredibly thin at SG/SF with West, Pavlovic, and Kinsey all being out. That's probably something that could be holding up some deals.

Worst case scenario, we keep Wally, he comes off the books this summer, and we have some cap room to play with.

even with wally off the books, cleveland will have no cap room to play with outside of their MLE.

Doh!

I thought we were only twenty million over the cap, not thirty.

Regardless, I can understand the hesitancy in dealing Wally, especially considering how well he's been playing lately.

There are really only a handful of players I'd want to trade him for, Camby being the ideal choice.

Wally and Snow off the books will reduce the payroll about 20.1 Million. Z and Andy also have player options. Z will probably exercise his, Andy will probably not.

If Z exercises his option and Andy does not, then the payroll will be a little
over 65.6 Million. The salary cap is expected to be reduced next year so don't expect any big offseason signings, except maybe Andy.

For the big season of 2010, Lebron actually has a player option of 17.1Mill, which he won't exercise. The great thing is that the roster will be free of garbage contracts for the first time in a long time. They will have Mo, Delonte, Bobbie, JJ and Darnell Jackson under contract for the tidy sum of 18.4 Million. If the cap is at 65Mil, then the most LeBron could sign for would be around 21Mill, leaving over 25 Mill to sign additional free agents.

Awe, fuck it. Who cares.

I'm thinking they stick with the team as is. I like Antawn, but his contract sucks. For some reason the Clippers want to keep Camby. They suck.

Delonte will be a nice sight when he comes back (not literally, he's butt-ugly).

Dang... I don't check this thread for a few days and I miss some great posting opporunities. But I won't rehash most what is said.

Amare ain't happening now that Phoenix is back to their run & gun style. And he would have been great to get, but that ship has sailed it seems.

Camby being the #1 target makes so much sense. He can come off the bench if need be, or start him next to Z. The matchups become endless! And he finally gives us a legit defensive big (Ben is on the decline) My bet is Ferry is playing chicken with the Clippers. The Clippers are saying they won't trade him, but you know Sterling will order something in the 11th hour to cut salary. So because of this any move the Cavs will make will be at the 11th hour, and will have another deal on the back burner in case the Clippers do something un-Clipper like and keep Camby.

Jamison is VERY interesting. For the now he makes so much sense. He can play outside or inside and gives us a nice combo of him and Mo when LeBron is on the bench. (can you see a two man game with those 2?)

The only bad thing is his contract. Too lazy to check the numbers but as long as the Cavs can still sign a max contract for Bosh in 2010 (or another player) then I have no problem. BUT if it prevents us from doing that... then Jamison's contract becomes a tough pill to swallow for sure.

Just remember... Bird rights on Z & LeBron. So really as long as they sign Bosh (or any other player) to the max contract BEFORE Z & LeBron sign you can then sign Z & LeBron to go over the cap. That is how we signed Hughes cuz after he signed we signed Z & LeBron to go over the cap. There is other technical issues as it isn't like Z & LBJ's don't count against the cap, it just won't be as much as the deal they finally sign for. (Well, in Z's case if he is going to sign for a lesser deal then he might have to be signed 1st before everyone else)

Confused yet?

a simpler way is like this:

lebron makes $17.1 million in the final year of his contract. He counts as $17.1 million against cleveland's cap until he signs with someone else, or cleveland renounces their bird's rights to him, which means they would no longer be able to pay him more than any other team.

now, during that time, cleveland can sign other players so long as they don't exceed the overall cap. but once lebron signs his deal, that can put cleveland over the cap.

I think Z hangs 'em up after his current contract expires.

Jamison is sceduled to make 13.3Mil in 10/11. That would bring the total payroll to 32.1 Mill, without Andy, LBJ or any other f.a. Considering their current payroll of > 90Mill, it seems like more than enough would be available. Of course, if Quicken Loans hits the skids, then that could be a different story.

Ain't the 17.1 the option year? So it might be less that that. But you are probable more correct than I. (EDIT - just checked, LeBron's 2010 salary is $15.7 for what it is worth)

I don't see Z hanging them up especially if we are winning championships and he is still healthy. But I can see him willing to accept a lesser role (as a backup or very reduced minutes) cuz he does love Cleveland and friends with Ferry. So I can see him signing a 2-3 year worth $5-$8 mil per to ride the LeBron gravy train for more rings.

Then again, if LeBron leaves that might change Z's mind to hang them up.

Lot of rumors flying around now, but nothing sounds like it's likely to happen. Let's see if anyone wants to cut some salary. 2.5 hours left.

ESPN Cleveland radio reported rumblings with Phoenix, Shaq in exchange for Anderson and Ben.
Looks like Kerr and Ferry are trying to get something done after all.
