CAVALIERS INSIDER
Brown sits Wallace on 'day-to-day basis'

Monday, March 31, 2008
Cavs coach Mike Brown changed his starting lineup on Sunday and decided to sit Ben Wallace on a "day-to-day basis."
"[Wallace] is cleared to play," Brown said. "He checked out fine, but I'm not playing him [on Sunday]. I want to be conservative. I'll have to make decisions on how long I'm going to sit him out."
Wallace left Saturday's game against the Pistons when he went up for an alley-oop dunk attempt but got bumped. He left with 9:05 left in the third quarter due to back spasms. Sunday was the fourth full game he's missed since joining the team.

Wallace said he has had spasms in the past, but the stinger associated with his current spasms is something new.
"I want to get it under control before the playoffs start," Wallace said. "Whatever the doctors say, I'm going to do it."
Brown's lineup change included Anderson Varejao and Devin Brown as starters. Varejao replaced Wallace, and Brown replaced Sasha Pavlovic. The Cavs went 7-3 with Brown as a starter when Pavlovic was out with an injury. When Pavlovic returned, the Cavs were 3-6.

Cavs' West gets job done
Point guard gets aggressive in win

CLEVELAND Stop thinking, start playing.

Sounds simple.

Doing it in the NBA alongside a worldwide superstar, though, isn't always easy.

Delonte West got it done Sunday night ? thinking less, playing better and helping the Cavs snap a three-game losing streak. The Cavs beat the 76ers, 91-88, in front of a sellout crowd of 20,562 at Quicken Loans Arena.

LeBron James, the aforementioned worldwide superstar, played his usual big part in the win. His driving 4-footer put the Cavs ahead with 19.3 seconds left before his strong defense helped seal the win at the buzzer. That capped his 26-point, nine-rebound, nine-assist night.

Cavaliers notebook: Injuries force Cavaliers to juggle lineup, again
Monday, March 31, 2008
BY Chris Beaven
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Seeking consistency ? while dealing with more injuries ? Head Coach Mike Brown shook up the Cavaliers' starting lineup again.

Devin Brown took over at shooting guard in place of Sasha Pavlovic for Sunday's home game with the 76ers. Pavlovic had started the last nine games since returning from injury, with the team going 3-6 in that stretch.

"Devin's played well on both ends of the floor and hopefully it will give us consistency on both ends of the floor ... and rebounding the ball also," Mike Brown said.

The lineup's other changes were courtesy of the team's constant injuries. Anderson Varejao stepped in for power forward Ben Wallace, out with persistent back problems, while Delonte West returned at point guard after a one-game absence because of a foot problem. They were joined by LeBron James and Zydrunas Ilgauskas, making this the team's 20th different starting lineup.

LeBron goes to the bank to lift Cavs over Sixers
Sunday, March 30, 2008
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CLEVELAND LeBron James made a twisting bank shot with 19.3 seconds left to put Cleveland ahead to stay and the Cavaliers defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 91-88 on tonight.

James, who finished with 26 points, took the ball at the top of the key, drove through the lane and put Cleveland up 90-88. After a Philadelphia miss, Cleveland forward Joe Smith was fouled and made one free throw.

Andre Iguodala, who led the 76ers with 19 points, missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Trailing 86-82, Cavaliers guard Delonte West hit two 3-pointers to tie the game at 88 with 1:13 to play. West finished with 18 points.

James, who made 4-of-17 shots in Saturday's loss to Detroit, was 11-of-18 from the field with nine rebounds and nine assists.

The Cavaliers had lost three in a row and seven of nine.

injuries have certainly kept cleveland from maintaining any sort of continuity this year.

lbj having a rough patch doesn't help much either.

i can't envision a scenario where cleveland doesn't exercise west's option for next season. cleveland definately needs either a 2 that can score or a pg.

but if joe smith isn't resigned after this year, the cavs are going to need a PF/C as well.

I think West and Boobie are restricted FA. You know they will sign Boobie for as long as they can, but I'm sure West will get 3-4 years. Even if they do eventually get a better PG West will be a good backup. He is the only real PG they have on the team that can actually play.

Cavs' coach courts on-court changes Brown in search of solid lineup
By Brian Windhorst
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Tuesday, Apr 01, 2008
CLEVELAND: Several times during this season, Cavaliers coach Mike Brown has proclaimed himself in ''search mode.''
It has been the nearly constant mode of an active roster in continuous flux since late January.
Trying his best to find something concrete, Brown tried to step out of that role Sunday and started to take some decisive action. He made an adjustment to his starting lineup and then drew a line in the sand with parts of his rotation in the 91-88 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.
Time will tell whether he can, or will, stick to it, but his statements and actions were more definitive than they have been in weeks. The major maneuver was replacing Sasha Pavlovic in the starting lineup with Devin Brown.

Tumultuous season has tested coaches

Tuesday, April 01, 2008Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter
One of the biggest challenges Cavaliers coach Mike Brown and his staff expected this season was defending their Eastern Conference crown, which accordingly comes with a bull's-eye attached.
The contract holdouts that kept forward Anderson Varejao and guard Sasha Pavlovic out of training camp and injuries throughout the season added more burdens. Then the megatrade and the four new players it brought in on Feb. 21 posed yet another challenge.
In spite of it all, the Cavs are eight games over .500, in second place in the Central Division and currently hold the No. 4 seed in the East for the upcoming playoffs.
@StoryAd
Cavs assistant coach Mel Hunt said compared to last season, this season has been demanding.
"Three years ago, we made the jump from average team to good team, and last year we moved from a good team to an elite team," Hunt said. "Now when we go into every arena, we're the hunted. This season has been a challenge, but it's been fun. We've had to work for everything and our team has done a great job. We knew even without the trade, holdouts and injuries that this was going to be a challenge."

Hearing the voice inside

Wednesday, April 02, 2008Mary Schmitt Boyer
Plain Dealer Reporter
Even if Lance Allred's short tenure with the Cavaliers ends on Thursday, he has to be considered a success story. Considering all he went through to get to the NBA, no one can be unmoved by what he has accomplished.
"He's got to be an inspiration," Cavs coach Mike Brown said before the team left for tonight's game at Charlotte.
Allred, the 6-11 center from Weber State, is legally deaf and is believed to be the first such player in the NBA. He also has battled obsessive-compulsive disorder.
@StoryAd
"For him to be where he is . . . that's a remarkable accomplishment," Brown said.
Allred, 27, is finishing up the second of two 10-day contracts. When it expires on Thursday, the Cavs must either sign him for the rest of the season or release him. Although Brown loves almost everything about Allred, the coach declined to say whether the rookie would stick.
But even if his chances are only 50-50, Allred has beaten much worse odds. He has been fighting since the day he was born -- literally.

Cavaliers' Mike Brown still looking for a rotation heading toward playoffs
Wednesday, April 2, 2008
BY Chris Beaven
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

INDEPENDENCE Forming an opinion of the Cavaliers is not easy these days. Give them a game ? even a half or a quarter ? and it changes, good or bad.

Ask Head Coach Mike Brown, who has seen it all this season.

But with 15 days left in the regular season, and a third straight trip to the playoffs looming, Brown hopes his team's best basketball is ahead. Starting with a game at 7 tonight at Charlotte, the Cavs have just eight games left to pull things together.

"We want to try to at least have homecourt advantage in the first round," Brown said. "We want to play the right way, because we haven't played the right way often ... enough to go into the playoffs."

The Cavs are 10-9 since Feb. 24, the night their four newcomers from a trade three days earlier ? Joe Smith, Wally Szczerbiak, Ben Wallace and Delonte West ? made their debut alongside MVP candidate LeBron James.

Lebron fouls out with 3 minutes left in the game up only 2 or 3 points and the Cavs hold on for the win. Wally really picked them up in the 4th with some big shots. Andy had a big game and 7 guys with double figures in all. Boobie still trying to knock the rust off. Pavs and Jones look like they might be out of the rotation for now.
The 4th spot is close to being locked up, but they only have 1 easy win the rest of the season, not counting the two against the Bulls.
