CLEVELAND A wide-open dunk awaited Ben Wallace late Thursday night against the Bulls. So wide open, the "Big Ben Bell" began to chime inside Quicken Loans Arena as the crowd started to roar in anticipation.

But GONG gave way to CLANG in an instant. Wallace got denied by the rim. A stunned groan from the sellout crowd of 20,562 quickly overtook the suddenly muffled sound of the bell ringing ? a perfect signature to a game the Cavs gave away.

The Bulls rallied from 17 points down late in the third to beat the Cavs, 101-98. It kept alive Chicago's ever faint playoff hopes, while preventing Cleveland from further securing itself as the fourth seed.

"It's frustrating," Cavs Head Coach Mike Brown said. "We're up 17 late and we had plenty of opportunities to put the game away."

The Cavs (42-34) lost momentum late in the third and then went scoreless for the game's final 3:31. It resulted in just their second loss in their last 12 home games. It's also the largest lead the Cavs have blown since squandering an 18-point lead at home to Phoenix in a Jan. 25 loss.

Now I'm scared.

I watched that.. thing.. we called a 4th quarter.

At one point in the 4th quarter after an Orlando hoop, Boobie was dribbling down the court while LeBron was awalking to the bench.

LeBron clearly told Mike Brown to call a timeout. I know everyone jokes that this is LeBron's team, but it was actually pretty awkward to watch.

I think Brown wanted to keep playing but he took his cue.

Slumping Cavs try to work out kinks
Injuries hurt playoff drive

CLEVELAND None of them sounded panicked Saturday. They all tried to say the right things and not make excuses.

But with five games left in the regular season, it's clear the Cavaliers are not playing anywhere close to their best basketball.

And their star hopes that changes soon.

"It's been frustrating, but we have to figure it out, and I'm going to figure it out," LeBron James said after Saturday's 101-86 loss to Orlando. "I think I've always been able to bounce back in situations where I haven't played particularly well. I have a few days to reflect, a few days to look at some film, and see what's happening and go from there."

The Cavs are off until Wednesday's 7 p.m. home game with the New Jersey Nets.

The Cavs have lost two straight, both at home. Each time they built a lead late in the third quarter, only to let it slip away. Poor shooting killed them late in each game, as they shot a combined 10-for-46 in the last two fourth quarters. They also have suffered from various defensive breakdowns at key times and go through stretches where they don't take care of the basketball.

Seeking a feel-good script Cavaliers have five games to heal, erase doubts before playoffs begin
Published on Tuesday, Apr 08, 2008

INDEPENDENCE: Is there reason to feel good about the Cavaliers as the playoffs approach?
Well, let's see.
Their super-duper-star has been struggling with back problems.
They have lost five of their past seven games.
They have lost two in a row at home.
In one of those games, they blew a 17-point lead and lost to a team that will not go to the playoffs.
They have a chance to clinch home court for the first round, but three teams are within four games of them so continued poor play means they could lose home court in round one.
Not a pretty picture, you say?

Jones goes quietly to end of bench This is the third season veteran guard has seen his minutes diminish
By Brian Windhorst
Beacon Journal sportswriter

INDEPENDENCE: There's no charm in this third time around for Damon Jones.
As Cavaliers coach Mike Brown has tightened his rotation for the playoffs, he has again decided to stop playing Jones. There is only enough room for four players at the guard positions, and Brown is going with Delonte West, Daniel Gibson, Devin Brown and Wally Szczerbiak. Mike Brown made the same call regarding Jones in each of the past two seasons.
Jones has struggled in certain defensive situations during his time with the Cavs, which has contributed to the coach's decision. This year, however, Jones was having one of his best seasons, shooting 42 percent from 3-point range. Gibson, Szczerbiak and Devin Brown have all been struggling shooting the ball lately.
''It seems like the same trend, the only thing I can do is be ready when called upon,'' Jones said. ''I'm going to try to be a positive influence, if you try to go prove something you end up trying to do too much.''

Lack of court time bewilders Jones

Tuesday, April 08, 2008 Mary Schmitt Boyer

Plain Dealer Reporter
Damon Jones said this was the last time he was going to address the situation.
He spoke slowly and chose his words carefully while trying to explain his reaction to falling out of Cavs coach Mike Brown's rotation. Again.
"Hard is not the word," he said.
@StoryAd
"I don't think there's a word for it that can explain the feelings you go through knowing that you're capable of being positive and helping the team win in any way, shape or form, and at this point in time my name's not being called. It's three years in a row for me, and every time I've been called upon, hopefully I've been able to be positive toward the team winning."
