Cavs 07-08 Season Thread

I love it!

Finish this- now. Good defense, but again, the commentators are clueless.

We're taking terrible shots- shot selection- and overally sloppy? How are we up 6- and what does that say about the Pistons offensive game thus far?

Just idiots. Really aggravating to me.

The key tonight was the third quarter. That's usually when the Cavs roll over (especially against the Pistons.) Tonight they weren't great in the third (they lost the 3rd by a 19-18 score) but they held their own. With the lead the Cavs had at halftime and the way they can play in the 4th quarter, that's the key to winning comfortably against decent teams.

Lots of players have had good games tonight. Varejao brought good energy and led a charmed life on offense tonight. Ben Wallace brought good defense against Rasheed tonight. The difference between him and Gooden is obvious. That putback Big Ben had to beat the halftime buzzer was a nice play. Like I said about Wally earlier, he looked good tonight moving without the ball and got some good looks around the free throw line for jumpers and cutting to the basket. That kind of thing might get him going with his jumper.

The Pistons were obviously tired playing the second of a back to back. This game was a gimme in that sense, but the Cavs don't always capitalize in these kinds of situations - beating teams they should beat or taking out good teams when they're not at full strength. It was good to see the Cavs take care of business tonight, especially after the way the last few games have gone.

Now's the time for them to start ramping it up heading toward the playoffs.

Good win for the Cavs tonight. Man, I enjoy Joe Tate calling a game on the radio. Today, it was just a tough day being a fan from the state of Mich. vs. Ohio. A loss to the Cavs, oh, and that other event today that didn't go their way. I almost feel sorry for them.........not.

The Red Wings did beat the BJs - a moral victory if I've ever seen one.

Cavs' muscle stymies Pistons Defensive intensity represents renewal of playoff strategy
By Brian Windhorst

CLEVELAND: The Cavaliers insist they didn't put any extra emphasis on Wednesday's meeting with the rival Detroit Pistons, but that's not the way they played.
After looking uneven over the past two weeks, the Cavs pieced together one of the best games since last month's trade. Led by some of the best team defense they've played this season, the Cavs constructed an impressive 89-73 victory.

Competition brings Pavlovic back fast Severe mid-foot sprain heals quickly because of diligent rehabilitation
By Brian Windhorst

CLEVELAND: The word ''sprain'' was used to describe the injury Sasha Pavlovic suffered back in January, but that didn't mean it was minor.
There was a period when the Cavaliers' team doctors feared that the mid-foot injury might have wiped out his season. The point being, just having him back on the court is its own success story. Nonetheless, Pavlovic couldn't have been more aggressive in his desire to get back to the team as fast as possible.

Stellar defensive play leads Cleveland Cavaliers past the Detroit Pistons, 89-73

New lineup jells in win over Pistons
Thursday, March 20, 2008Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter
Close to a month has passed since the Cavaliers made their blockbuster trade that brought in Wally Szczerbiak, Ben Wallace, Joe Smith and Delonte West, and coach Mike Brown has craved for his unit to produce what transpired on Wednesday night.
"We're still in search mode," Brown said. "We're using these games to win and to get better. Against Orlando [on Monday night], we played [good defense] for 24 minutes. Wednesday night, we played the right way for 48 minutes and that made the difference."
In resounding fashion.
@StoryAd
The night after the Detroit Pistons shot lights out, the Cavs shut their Eastern Conference rival's offensive lights off in an 89-73 victory at The Q.
This was the Cavs' eighth straight home victory and their first over the conference-leading Pistons in two meetings this season. The Cavs lost by 35 to Detroit in November when James left the first half with a finger sprain.
The Pistons wish James would have taken this game off, too.
James scored 30 and had seven rebounds and six assists. He is five points shy of setting the Cavs' career-scoring record.

Guard Devin Brown brings an unnoticed consistency to the Cleveland Cavaliers

CAVALIERS INSIDER
Brown brings
quiet reliability
@StoryAd
he most flamboyant thing about guard Devin Brown's game is the occasional dunk, and sometimes even that's boring. But when it comes to consistency and steady play, especially since the Cavs' Feb. 21 trade, Brown has been the man.
Since the trade, Brown is averaging 10.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists, and is shooting 41.6 percent from 3-point range, 47.7 percent from the field and 81.8 percent from the free-throw line. Brown is everything coach Mike Brown thought he was when the Cavs signed him as a free agent last fall.
"He's not great at any one thing," coach Brown said. "He's just solid at everything. He's going to rebound, he's going to get assists, he's going to defend. He'll knock down a 3 if he's open. I call him a utility guy that gets it done on both ends of the floor. That's why we wanted him."
Brown is the ultimate lunch-pail type of player. You really don't notice what he has done until you look at the box score at the end of the game. He learned how to be versatile in high school at San Antonio and at Texas-San Antonio University.

Cavaliers rely on defense to stop Pistons
Thursday, March 20, 2008

CLEVELAND Tough defense. Just enough offense.

Sounds like playoff basketball in the NBA ? and exactly the type of basketball Cavaliers Head Coach Mike Browns loves.

The Cavs made their coach happy Wednesday, beating the archrival Detroit Pistons, 89-73, in a playoff-type game. A sellout crowd of 20,562 at Quicken Loans Arena and a national TV audience watched the Cavs allow their fewest points since the Knicks scored 68 a year ago against them.

"I thought our guys came into the game with the right mindset," Brown said. "We put together a complete game on the defensive end of the floor."

The Cavs limited the Pistons to 35 second-half points to pull away for their eighth straight home win. They also evened the season series at 1-1 with Detroit. The teams meet twice more over the final 13 games.

"Any time you play a rival team ... you want to play well," Cavs All-Star LeBron James said. "We did a good job at playing the right way tonight."

GETTING CLOSER LeBron James needs just 5 points to become the Cavs all-time leading scorer. James has 10,385 points in 379 career games. Brad Daugherty retired as the Cavs leader with 10,389 points in 548 games. "It means a lot to go down in the history book as the all-time leading scorer in franchise history," James said Wednesday when asked about the impending record. "... I've tried to be the best I can be ... so it means a lot." James already owns team records for points in a season (2,478 in 2005-06) and points in a game (56 vs. Toronto on March 20, 2005).

Szczerbiak working way out of slump
Friday, March 21, 2008
BY Chris Beaven
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND With his minutes dwindling and shots not falling, Wally Szczerbiak didn't complain or panic.

The Cavs guard-forward kept working on his game, which began to pay off Wednesday against Detroit. Szczerbiak put together one of his better games since coming to the Cavs a month ago, scoring 10 points in 14-plus minutes.

More importantly, he shot 4-of-7 from the floor after making just 4-of-17 shots the previous three games when his minutes were reduced each time.
