Cavs 06-07 season thread

I agree, and I also think he needs to get out of his habit where he catches the ball and waits about 5 seconds to make his move...I think he would be much better with catching it and going, and I also think they need to get away from so many pick n' rolls as everytime they just bring two guys out on LBJ and he is either forced to pass it away or dribble out of the double team and reset.

I would like to see a 1-4 set much like the Heat do with Wade and let him work, b/c if he has the whole end he can got to either side instead of having him on the wing where they play the little double team zone teams always play where he has to beat 2 guys to get to the rack...

As I have said Mike Brown does not have an offensive mind...

I completely agree with this you have to let Lebron have a chance one on one because you cannot stop him that way and the easiest way to do that is go with the 1-4 at the end of the game.

I'm sure I've said it in this thread before, but my theory is that the Cavs "statistically improved" defense is a product of the slow tempo at which they play the game on offense. They're so deliberate, that it limits the other team's possessions.

Unfortunately though, it's limiting the Cavs possessions too. For a team that shoots as poorly as the Cavs, they need as many possessions as possible to get the 95-110 points it takes to win the typical NBA game. Increasing their tempo on offense would increase their possessions and might even help them develop a better rhythm. On the other hand, increasing the tempo would increase the number of opponent possessions. The people defending the team's effort so far this season are hanging their hat on the supposed defensive improvement. If that improvement is real and not just a mirage, then it should be able to withstand having to defend more possessions.

I agree, hopefully Brown takes off the reins and tell them to run...

LeBron, Cavaliers want to run more
Wednesday, February 7, 2007
By TOM WITHERS AP Sports Writer

CLEVELAND LeBron James and the Cavaliers want to run, run, run. Coach Mike Brown isn't ready to let his team loose.

With their offense sputtering during a rough patch in an up-and-down season, some of the Cavaliers, most prominently James, are questioning the club's defense-oriented philosophy. James, whose scoring average is down 5 points from last season, believes the Cavs would be better off playing at a faster pace, pushing the ball up the floor to quicken the game's tempo, and, to score more points.

James Backtracks
Feb 7 - After openly suggesting the Cavs change their style of play Monday, a day of reflection had LeBron James humming a little different tune Tuesday. Now, he said, making a change midseason might not be the best idea.

"Right now, we're not trying to switch anything, just trying to get better at what we're doing and what we've been doing most of the year," James said. "You can always make a little change, but you don't want to scratch everything away. You have to pick and choose what you want to change." -- Akron Beacon-Journal

Ready For Vegas
Feb 7 - Damon Jones doesn't know for sure (wink, wink) that he's been invited to the Long Distance Shootout, but just in case he is, he's practicing shooting from racks of balls.

"The official word comes down on Thursday," Jones said Tuesday after practice. "I'm trying to prepare accordingly. I've never shot off a rack before, so I want to get some good repetition in."

If he's invited, Jones will fit in the festivities in Las Vegas during All-Star weekend.
"I'm a walking sound bite," he said. "I'm walking entertainment. There's not going to be a bigger stage than Vegas this year. The lights, glitter, cameras and action fits in with my persona." -- Willoughby News-Herald

I'm still trying to figure out when Pavlovic and Lebron switched games. I'm really hoping that this is the Pav that we are going to see from here on out because the Cavs need him. He drives to the hoop, throws up some crazy shots on drives that more often than not seem to go in, and most of the time can nail an open 3.
I loved how the Clips played the Eric Snow D on Gibson to start the game and gave up 6 points on the first two trips to the Cavs end. That will open up the middle.

I totally agree...Pavs is almost our best player at this point...

He is filling in that role that Flip Murray took last year when he came over in the trade...

Now if we can just get LBJ back to his oldself and Hughes not taking so many jumpshots and taking it strong to the hole with Gibby running the show we are going to improve but until LBJ starts scoring more than 11 pts/game we are going to be the most up and down team in the league...

Observations:

We had a Shannon Brown sighting !!!

Agree about Pavs. He seems to have alot of confidence now, and can shoot free throws. You're right, those shots seem to go in more often than not.

Gibby needs to learn to shoot a litlle more. It sure looked like that 3 at the buzzer was out before the light went on. His shooting is going to force teams to look at him rather than cheating a guy down deep. I like his 4 boards, 2 steals and 1 turnover, too.

No way in hell does Damon Jones win the 3 point contest. 1 for 6 last night. Anyone want to take DJ in a vbet? Yea, me neither.

No Help Needed
Feb 8 - Despite suggestions from fans, Cavs coach Mike Brown said he wouldn't look for any outside help with his team's foul shooting. That includes professional experts.

"It's not a good thing to keep adding voices," Brown said. "Even within the coaching staff, I tell them (assistant coach) Chris Jent is working them and the rest of us should just keep encouraging him." -- Akron Beacon-Journal

"It's painful to watch at times," Mark Price said. "I hate to see anybody miss free throws."

Price said it's possible to fix what ails the Cavaliers, but that might be difficult to do at this point in the season.
"Individually, guys have to work on it in the offseason," Price said. "It's tough to change techniques during the season. When a couple guys are struggling, it spreads and it affects the whole team. At this point, a lot of it is mental." -- Willoughby News-Herald

CAVALIERS NOTEBOOK
James: Openly gay player wouldn?t last long in league
Thursday, February 08, 2007
James Walker
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CLEVELAND ? Cavaliers players reacted yesterday to John Amaechi becoming the first NBA player to publicly admit that he is gay. An autobiography by Amaechi, who retired in 2003, will be released Feb. 14. Forward LeBron James said he didn?t think an openly gay player could survive in the NBA, but at the same time trust would be a major issue if a teammate was hiding his homosexuality.

CLEVELAND - Determined to shake things up, the Cavaliers attempted to run at every opportunity Wednesday night.
It didn't exactly work.
They did, on the other hand, play aggressive and intelligent defense. That worked quite smashingly.
Substituting a track meet for a slugfest wasn't appealing to the eye, but it got the Cavs the victory they wanted, 94-77 over the Los Angeles Clippers.
