Cavs 06-07 season thread

we were very good last year... so what have we done that gets us to the next level for next year? (and making Wallace sign with Chicago doesn't count):wink2:
Player wise the only new face will be Shannon Brown. I think he is going to be a player at some point this season, and sooner if Hughes can't stay healthy again. I like Browns athleticism, defense, and ability to shoot. IMO he'll be the 6th man this season and take over for what Murray brought to the team.
Any other improvement that the Cavs will see this year will be a mix of the team being together for a second straight season, and player improvement. Lebron has gotten better every season so far and I think all the practice with Team USA will help him even more. He is working with some of the best offensive and defensive minds in bball right now and I'm sure he is learning something everyday. Varejao is also a player with room to improve, and it sounds like he is. He put up a double double against USA and played even better against Germany. I'm looking for him to get more playing time this season. Z is getting older so it would be wise to drop him down to 20 minutes a game and give Varejao more time at center. If Varejao's offensive game has come around at all this summer he is going to be a force on both ends. Hopefully Marshall and Jones will find their stroke in their second year in Cleveland. If Jones doesn't it's time to move him. Pavlovic and Jackson are also at do or die time. If they don't pick it up during the season I wouldn't be surprised to see them moved. Hopefully Gooden will find his consistency and become a great player, if not and the Cavs have holes elsewhere Gooden's contract makes him easy to move.

edit- The Wallace to Chicago move will help the Cavs. We can only hope that his lack of offense hurts the Bulls scoring. On the bright side they made the Pistons weaker and didn't take Gooden away from the Cavs.

We didn't mess with the roster too much. There weren't any free agents out there that were both going to make the team better and worth the money. So good offseason as far as I'm concerned.

Having a healthy Varejeo around for the whole season is also going to help improve the team.

I'm not sure how much Gibson will contribute this season, if any, but they can't have another year with Snow playing the bulk of the time at the point. Now if they let LBJ or Hughes bring it up and have Brown at the 2, I'd be very happy with that. Having Snow at the point really hurt last year. It was just too easy for teams to ignore him. I don't think they'll be able to ignore Brown. Plus, Brown is great going to the hoop and has some serious hops, two things that Snow can't do.

On a side note, I see that the Cavs signed a HUGE deal with Fox Ohio. It gives them the 4th best cable deal in the NBA. That's a big deal for the future when Gilbert will have to start paying luxury tax. Apparently Gilbert pimped FSN into paying all that money because of the threat to use STO as competition for their rights.

Practice could make perfect

Cavs hope building new facility will also build winning attitude

By Zach Silka

Beacon Journal sportswriter

<!-- begin body-content -->CLEVELAND - It took an assistant general manager's 12 trips, a general manager's prodding and an owner's commitment, but the Cavaliers are one step closer to a new practice facility in suburban Independence.
The team unveiled a model and architectural renderings of Cleveland Clinic Courts at a news conference Thursday. The approximately $21 million facility is set to be completed at this time next year.
Construction is underway along state Route 21 near Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
``We're building an environment where people can excel,'' Cavs owner Dan Gilbert said. ``When you have a facility like this... I really believe it will affect the outcome, the winning, the championship culture that we're building.''
Gilbert said he hopes the new facility will entice players to see Cleveland as a destination point for their careers, particularly LeBron James.
``Other than helping to win championships, these facilities are a means to an end,'' Gilbert said.
The new structure will have two full-size basketball courts, a weight room, meeting area, an underground parking lot and will contain many of the team offices that are now at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland.
Before coming to Cleveland, Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry had the opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art practice facility with the San Antonio Spurs. It's one of the organizations Cavs Assistant GM Chris Grant visited on his countrywide information-gathering tour.
``Every facet of what we do is going to be enhanced here,'' Ferry said. ``Right now, we're in a small little gym that you can't get much done in.
``I remember practicing here (as a player), and you couldn't get an opportunity to shoot and really do something as a team.''
The Cavs' current practice home at Quicken Loans Arena doesn't cater well to the front office, either.
In the existing setup in Cleveland, Ferry's office is on the sixth floor, coach Mike Brown's office is on the fourth floor and the locker room is on the first floor. In Independence, everyone will be on one floor.
``Everything we're doing is trying to build a team,'' Ferry said. ``We're all together now, and I think from a communication standpoint, that's going to be one of our strengths.''
In addition to San Antonio, Grant made stops over the past several months at four NBA practice facilities built in the past 10 years, three NFL team sites and four colleges, including Texas' Cooley Pavilion, built in 2004.
Said Ferry: ``We wanted to try and truly make this the best place in the world to train for basketball.''
Dribbles . . .
Ferry said Thursday the Cavs expect to announce formally the signing of Drew Gooden early next week. The two sides agreed to a three-year, $23 million package earlier this week, but Ferry said some logistics still need to be worked out. Gooden has yet to take a physical, he said.

Cavs add front-court depth, sign Scot Pollard<!-- begin presby2 -->

<!-- begin text11 div -->
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD style="PADDING-TOP: 10px" vAlign=top>CLEVELAND -- Free agent forward Scot Pollard, known for his ever changing hair and sideburns, signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers, who also traded center Martynas Andriuskevicius to the Chicago Bulls for guard Eddie Basden on Friday. <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 align=right border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width=8 rowSpan=2></TD><TD width=65>

Pollard averaged 3.8 points and 4.8 rebounds in 45 games -- 32 starts -- last season for the Indiana Pacers, his third NBA team. The wild-haired, 6-foot-11, 265-pounder will give the Cavs more inside muscle and can provide needed energy along with Anderson Varejao.

"Adding Scot to our roster gives us more depth, size, toughness and experience," Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry said. "We believe Scot can be a valuable contributor to our team as we continue to build a championship level team here in Cleveland."

The 31-year-old Pollard has made 460 career starts and appeared in 57 playoff games since being drafted by Detroit in the first round (19th overall) in 1997. He played 33 games with the Pistons before being dealt to Atlanta for Christian Laettner.

After being waived the Hawks, Pollard signed as a free agent with Sacramento and spent six seasons with the Kings. He was traded to the Pacers in a three-team deal in 2003.

Andriuskevicius was a project for the Cavaliers, who acquired the 7-foot-2 Lithuanian last year from Orlando for a second-round draft pick and cash. He played just nine minutes in six games for Cleveland, spending most of the season in the NBA's Developmental League.

"Marty is a young and talented kid and he made good strides during the past year, but ultimately this trade puts us in a more flexible position with our roster," Ferry said.

Basden played in 19 games for the Bulls last season, averaging 2.1 points, 1.5 rebounds.

Does that seem like an odd move to anyone else? I know it's nice to have a lot of big men, but it almost seems like their aren't enough minutes to go around now. Varejao needs to get at least 25-30 minutes a game. Gooden, Z, and Marshall all need at least 20. I'm just wondering if signing Pollard is a sign that Z or Gooden are going to be moved. On the other hand they might just have wanted another big man to go up against Shaq and Big Ben. Pollard might be the replacement for Henderson and get 0-15 minutes a game.

edit- Does anyone know anything about Pollard? All I remember is that I didn't like him with the Pacers, which means he might be the physical asshole type of a player the Cavs need.

He's averaged more rebounds than points in his career (5.0 to 4.7), for one thing. He's basically just a physical presence who's going to come in for 10-15 minutes a game and give out a few hard fouls.

He's the new Henderson. He'll see a few minutes a game if someone gets into foul trouble. Aside from Nash, Pollard historically has the ugliest hair in the league.

If Ferry's happy with him, then I've got to be happy with him, too.

With Pollard and Varajao, you've got two guys who won't back down from anybody. In the East, where Shaq, 'Zo, 'Sheed, and Jermaine O'Neal roam, that's two pretty good assets to have.

Plus it's 6 extra fouls.
