Cavs 06-07 season thread

As for getting rid of Hughes contract I just don't think it is possible...You still have to eat the money so you might as well, unless you can trade him play him off the bench...

I still think that offense is not geared towards Larry's stretgths and for that matter not geared towards many of our players besides maybe Z or Drew at times, but they are not looked upon to score that much in the offense...

First we need to turn into somewhat of an up and down team...We all know what LBJ can do in the open court and I also believe that Larry might turn the ball over a little more, but he would be more apt to get it and go, and his assits would increase and also I think his shot selection would improve...I have caught myselfs all playoffs saying how Larry is getting forced into taking shots that he shouldnt be taking due to the standing around and giving him the ball with little time to work...

The problem with Larry is I think they want him to be more of a spot up shooter than he is, and he is the type of guy that wants to get to the hole, but when teams play this zone against us to guard against LBJ, Larry is not able to penetrate...

I think Larry's best position would be SG in a more open offense. He can drive very well. He's a good finisher. He can hit the midrange shot off penetration. I think that position is best for him. I loathe(not hate, but loathe) seeing him dribble behind screens near the three point line and jacking up fadeaway 20 footers as the shot clock expires. That says more about our offense though than it does about Larry.

This is why I think that getting an offensive minded assistant coach is the second biggest need this offseason after PG. I think we need to design our offense around Lebron, Hughes, Sasha, Gibson, Brown, Andy, and Gooden. I think we should keep some of our current offense for Z, but he's getting up there, and I just don't see him being all that effective past two years(maybe three) down the line.

Our offensive game plan really only has two facets: nonexistent(the give Lebron the ball, have him stand there until the shot clock is at 7, then pray he saves the possession) or atrocious(the pass and dribble the ball at the three point line and jack up a contested fade away as the shot clock expires). Those are our two mainstays on offense it seems.

This was his role in Washington and why he excelled...

I agree, we really need to do something about the offense...But part of me believes that as much say as LBJ has in the huddle and the things that are going on that he has a huge hand in all of this...And he is telling Brown how he can excel...

I don't think that's true. I remember early in the season when the Cavs were in one of their usual malaises, there were a lot of reports about Lebron not liking Brown's system and wanting him to switch to an open, Suns-type system.

I think Lebron would prefer to run as well, but I think an open system like that goes against Brown's defensive strategy(which I have to admit is very impressive). I think it's a pick your poison here. Do we give up a little on defense to improve our offense, or do we just use our great defense to make up for our stale half-court offense.

I don't even think the problem is even with running enough. Even in the half court our offense is pathetic. We stand around a lot even then. Running enough isn't the entire problem.

Hopefully these things are addressed in the offseason(I imagine they will considering how much press our terrible offense has gotten).

It also isn't even like Lebron is excelling in this system. I think he does better when we're running, people are cutting and setting screens. When he's driving and dishing. An offense like that would be better than our current(rather old fashioned actually) pick and roll offense with Z and Gooden. I'm not saying we should run a system like Phoenix or Golden State, but I'd love to see an offense more dictated on cutting and driving rather than the pick and roll. I think cutting and slashing are more suited to the skills of Sasha and Larry, and Gibson, Sasha, and hopefully Brown can spot up when Larry/Lebron drive and dish. I don't think we should throw up thirty threes, but I also don't think we should hold the ball until five seconds left on the clock. I just can't get over how inept our offense has been this postseason.

Brian Windhorst's blog has a lot of really good discussion about this issue(it's a main issue with him). You can find it on the Beacon Journal sports online page.

Hughes is in big time trouble... a planter fascia injury is extremely painful... excruciating... ask Mark Price... it just about ended Mark's career... this one takes forever to heal... you either need to be able to play thru the pain or bag it until it heals...

Would not be surprised if he's done for the year...

Time to see if Gibson is ready to shine...

I thought it was his heel, not his plantar fasciatis(I'm going to assume they're different)? I haven't read anything official about his injury though.
the tendon runs from your heel forward through your arch. i have no idea on the situation but heel/plantar fascia are likely the same thing. anyone who can play on that is a better man than me... itll be interesting to see how long hes had it...

How much is Larry Hughes guaranteed if Cleveland were to cut him? It seems like Cleveland could find a more affordable veteran to fill a backup/role player role... and put Hughes' non-guaranteed money towards a more useful free agent.

Unfortunately he is guaranteed pretty much everything (13+ million this year) for the next 3 seasons. He did have a winning bonus this year and I don't know if that goes away it he were to get cut. The problem is that if you are paying that kind of money you need the guy to play. He is a good defender and is productive on offense sometimes so you'd rather have him than cut him. Nobody is going to trade for him for at least a year or two, since he is only worth about half of his current contract. The Wizards did offer him a bigger contract than the Cavs so it's too bad that they probably wouldn't take him back now.
Of the guys that the Cavs would like to unload, they all have at least 2 years left on their contracts.

the major pain from a plantar fascia injury is where it connects to the heel... once you've started to tear there... you're in deep shit...

if he'd do shots... he'd be able to play a game... but one or two things could happen.. he could tear it further... and he won't play again this year for sure..

or two, he won't be able to walk for days after... this is not an injury that a couple days rest is all you need... this baby will shut you down...

pain-wise... it's a heel spur on steroids... excruciating

you can get away with playing on it... if you can get thru the initial pain... but once you stop... it all comes back...

if I'm not mistaken this is what ended Mark Price's career
