Cam Newton (QB New England Patriots)

I keep popping over to the Auburn boards to see if any of their credible posers are saying something like "Hey guys, we need to start paying attention to this."

Right now the big news is that ESPN no longer is covering the story - thus there never was a story. Normally that might sound good. After all, if an NCAA school calls you up and asks you to back off you just show them your press credentials.

But when the FBI calls you and tells you that you are interfering with an ongoing investigation you take a hard look at what sources are willing to go on the record and think seriously about backing off.

Of course, maybe Auburn is just surrounded by a lot of smoke.

Then again, most fire related deaths are caused by smoke inhalation.

I'd put the Tressel School of Religion next to the Hayes Department of History myself...

How about the Urban Meyer Theological Seminary next to the Pete Carroll School of ______. History classes used to be taught there, but all of the textbooks were destroyed in the last couple years.

Bill, I would have bolded it differently:

He don't need no stinking NCAA due process.....

Which is a good point. As Dictator, he should correct this [censored] now!

If he does, and this entire thing _is_ a result of one school blowing the whistle on another... there will never be another "War of Northern Aggression." Clearly, the south will divide and arms will be raised.

We may have heard the last "SEC SEC SEC" chant.

Wishful thinking.

Ya...'cause we haven't squealed on each other in the past before.
Squealing on each other is what we call the "off-season". :slappy:

Yep. Just like the Rebel Flag it will be somewhat gone in one hundred and fifty years.

Me thinks this is an entirely different level of squealing, if this is what it is.

I don't know if the delicious FBI Intercept Rumors are true, but if they are, the level of squealing would not seem as important as who was listening to the conversations of the people being squealed upon....

And then, if it were not the Heisman front runner and a possible BCS #1 or 2 program, the "legs" of the investigation would not have been as great. I mean, perhaps as inevitable, but not as speedy.

The press will get into a feeding frenzy on Cam and Auburn while largely ignoring a like problem if it existed at - say - Kansas. (Not talking about the bat [censored] crazy anomaly of Lowder & Auburn, but a pay-for-play scandal in general)

I think the sqealing by Miss State is in question. It's possible that the NCAA first learned about the alleged play-for-pay discussions with the Newtons because of wiretaps that the Feds had on the phones of Auburn boosters - like Bobby Louder (whose bank was recently taken over by the Feds) and/or Milton McGregor, the casino owner in trouble for money laundering and attempting to buy political favors regarding gambling within the state of Alabama.

It's possible that the NCAA heard those conversations even before Miss State reported the alleged improper discussions with the Newtons.

It's interesting that ESPN is only reporting the Miss State angle of the thing - I have yet to see them mention anything about the Auburn boosters and Auburn Board of Trustees members that are currently in deep trouble with the feds. But I'm sure that Tom Friend is down there doing some fine journalistic investigation before they decide to air any of that. :tongue2:

Newton attorney: Cam 'took no money'

An attorney who said he represents Cam Newton and his family told an Atlanta TV station Thursday that the Auburn quarterback has not taken any money in exchange for him playing college football.
"No money has been offered to Cam Newton," lawyer George Lawson told WSB-TV in Atlanta. "Cam Newton [hasn't] asked for any money."

"I am a million percent certain Cam Newton took no money from no one," Lawson said. "I would suggest to you he knew nothing about any solicitation of any money from anyone."

Entire article: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5822232

Would a lawyer lie? He's a million percent sure Cam didn't take any money. Well there you have it. Case closed.
