Cam Newton (QB New England Patriots)

If TP hadn't gotten injured the "experts" would be drooling over him just like Newton. TP actually looks like a more complete player, a "real" QB.
But it is what it is .
Even Tebow got beat up eventually. And Auburn actually depends on Newton more! Newton goes down and Auburn fades fast. The Iron Bowl will be a fun watch. Lots of real athletes on both sides but which is the better team?

Well, I won't argue that TP looks like a more complete player at this point. He's busted his ass since he got here working on his throwing mechanics among other things. He's lucky to have a coaching staff that cares about his well being after college. Cam won't be drafted as a QB but I could see him doing something in the NFL. TP is still iffy IMO - looks phenomenal against lower competition but needs to step it up against the better defenses. Oregon was a turning point but I haven't seen it since. I will say that TP would be better than Cam in the Auburn system; he has similar size but is a more explosive athlete. Dynamite comes in big boxes too.

It's actually irrelevant really...The SEC is good for business so nothing will come of this. This isn't Reggie Bush taking hundreds of thousands from an agent as he takes the Heisman trophy.

This is a street runner delivering a SEC recruit for a few bucks. This is far from the first time this happend and won't be the last. It's just the way the SEC plays and everyone knows it, and anyone who has any contacts knows a story just like this....

Hell, even the bball team I worked for lost a recruit to something like this. We didn't report it, and I'm still not sure why. A job for a mother was given and we lost the recruit, but never amde an issue of it....The SEC is just another breed.

As the Reggie Bush situation taught us, I have trouble blaming Cam Newton is this. I saw second-hand a mother with her hand-out take a basketball recruit away from us, and make him sign with Arkansas.

Is Cam Newton at fault here or others with their hands out?

Was Reggie Bus at fault or was his greedy step-father? All I'd caution people of is blaming and pointing fingers at Cam. Everyone forgets how innocent these kids can be and how corrupt the adults around them can be.

In summation, it is what it is. If in th event there was money exchanged for his signature (most likely was) don't take it all out on Cam. Just like it shouldn't have been taken all out on Reggie. These people have grown men in their lives with their hands out looking for whatever they can get now in case they aren't in the picture in the future....

I don't know about situations outside of the school where I taught and coached, but twice a year all of our athletes and their parents were given a night in which the dos and don'ts of recruiting were spelled out in explicit terms to include receiving pamphletes -- with phone #s and website urls -- from the NCAA.

It's not like this information isn't out there for everyone, it's wether or not the people involved want to know or want to believe something else.

And if 18 years of age makes you subject to adult courts, elgible to serve in the armed forces, elgible to vote, then 18 years of age is time enough for an athlete to find out what's straight and what isn't. In this case (assuming that there is something to it), as in the Reggie Bush case, the problem remains that other schools and other athletes will be denied what is rightfully theirs.

I hate this statement. Why don't you say "we give up. go ahead and break the rules"? We know that people are breaking the law, but it is what it is and we won't do anything about it. Nice.

I agree that "It it what it is" is merely a cop out statement and frankly the expression is downright silly. Having said that, I don't know yet that Newton broke any rules so I'm not blaming the kid yet. It sounds like some dude was on the take to try to get money from schools for Newton to go there, but I don't know that Newton has taken anything from this huckster. Until I know that, I'll continue to blame the creepy "agent'.
