Cam Newton (QB New England Patriots)

I pretty much only remember this - which was spoken at the halftime studio crew:

Mark May: Jim Tressel should be fired.

The hypocracy is very irritating. But I guess Cam didn't know about the 200Gs so it is ok. Troy is an idiot for admitting he took the money.

And... while I think that's a comment on Ohio State's character - I would also note, it's also what has ALWAYS occurred prior to this Barner situation (to my knowledge) at every other school.

No other school has played a player pending an investigation, and always sits the athlete at the first accusation of impropriety? Just checking.

Well, like 21 has said - ESPN learned quite a bit from the "war with OSU" as well. It's frustrating that our school got "the treatment" but in as much as it was ridiculous as against Ohio State, similar conduct from ESPN would be just as absurd in the direction of some other school.

Truthfully, I don't know. I just don't know of any specific case where a player played pending a resolution on his questionable eligibility. (Aside from the obvious case where a player is on the take, the coaches know it, and are hedging their bets that they don't get caught, of course).

Trick question.

Had this been Terrelle Pryor and Ohio State, Pryor would have been on the pine at the first sign his eligibility was in question. There he would have remained until the issue was settled.

a certain someone played against michigan with allegations swirling, he was then suspended for the alamo bowl and the first game of the next year.

You're probably right, but I don't remember anything about Troy coming prior to the Michigan game. My memory of that is that it happened following the contest. I do recall some players... Youboty, I think may have been one, who were involved in some off the field issues which made their participation in the game questionable... but, I don't remember those being eligibility related.

i believe the when troy smith punched the girl that was the year before that got him suspended for the michigan game, the incident outside of morrill that got holmes a quarter or a half game suspension also.

i just remember hearing swirls, rumors, i cant seem to find/locate an article with a date prior to mid december on the internet though. if i have sometime ill try and poke around this place to see when we first started talking about it.

Troy's receipt of benefits actually occured in the previous Spring. The final "official" story from the University as reported by the Dispatch was that Troy went to Robert Baker looking for work in early 2004, when Baker gave him ~$500 as an advance with promises to find Troy a job. One of the attorneys at Baker's company (Poly-Care), was alerted to Baker's hand outs and decided to blow the whistle after the Michigan game once Troy had become a celebrity QB.

So the incident occured sometime in April or May, Troy then played the entire regular season before finally being turned in on Dec 9. His suspension was announced on Dec 20.

Chris Gamble was also named as having a prior connection to Baker/Poly-Care in 2003, but was not found to have broken any rules since he did actually perform work. The term players (plural) was often thrown around in reference to Baker, but I don't recall any being named aside from Gamble and Smith.

Troy took a bullet for the program while Andy Geiger was out cracking skulls.

Thanks for that. Point remains - Ohio State benched him once it learned of the eligibility issue.
