Cam Newton (QB New England Patriots)

Kentuck if what he says is true it makes me think even less of the NCAA which I didn't think was possible. They have to believe what they are told? So if for the sake of argument a guy was competing in a woman's sport and they faced that committee and said even though she looks like a man, talks like a man, and is hairy like a man. She is not a man cause she has no dick. That committee can't say something to the effect pull down your pants and prove it? If that is so that is a committee only a government could love and shouldn't even exist in the first place.
yes but another part of the NCAA will go do an investigation. if they found out you lied, they'll hammer* you.

*if you're an SEC title contender, they'll use strong language while scolding you with a stern tone.

NCAA President Mark Emmert responded Thursday to the backlash that the governing body is allowing Cam Newton to play in the SEC championship game even though his father sought payment for his services.
?We recognize that many people are outraged at the notion that a parent or anyone else could ?shop around? a student-athlete and there would possibly not be repercussions on the student-athlete?s eligibility,? Emmert said in a statement on the NCAA?s web site.

Ruling on Newton Is Drawing Criticism
By PETE THAMEL
Published: December 2, 2010

Two of the most powerful people in college sports, Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany and Pacific-10 Commissioner Larry Scott, expressed concerns Thursday about the N.C.A.A.'s decision to declare Auburn quarterback Cam Newton eligible for Saturday?s Southeastern Conference championship game. The N.C.A.A. had acknowledged that Newton's father used a third party to shop his son in a "pay-for-play" scheme.

Delany, a former N.C.A.A. investigator who is familiar with its nuances, said in a telephone interview that the N.C.A.A. "missed an opportunity to stand up." Scott, in his first year at the Pac-10, said his office had heard from numerous universities in the conference that had concerns about Wednesday's decision.

Delany said he had told the N.C.A.A. his thoughts, adding that the theory behind the decision set a worrisome precedent.

"What I would say on any third-party issue is that the analysis in my view, whether you're an assistant coach, president or a booster or a parent, is that there ought to be accountability," Delany said. "There ought to be consequences."

Cont'd ...

The phrase "at this time" has obviously been pounded into all these NCAA people's heads. It keeps showing up in every release or interview. Tells me this ain't over by any stretch of the imagination in my imo...

Perhaps you missed the length of time it took to investigate the Bush deal with no NCAA subpoena power. It really does not matter what anybody "thinks" happened - at this time. Like it or not, they have little choice in the matter - at this time. I have very little doubt that the future will reveal different evidence, and that the Aubies will get the [censored] hammer pounding that they deserve. But at this time, with what evidence is available and "court room ready", they really do not have a case solid enough to do anything else...so they are trying their best to put a shine on the pig that is the possible Cam and Aubies win the BCS. And they have to be looking at the ratings and $$. But even if they are, they have very few options given the dearth of evidence at this time.

All the NCAA guys are big BP fans. They go by the name BKB :p

Yup. I read your post and since I've noticed that they continue to repeat the "at this time" phrase. Different people, different stories. Seems to me they know this isn't over, but have to sit tight for whatever reason at this point. My guess is, what others have mentioned, they are waiting until they can get their hands on this rumored FBI/IRS evidence. Unfortunately, that may not be for quite some time...

By the time they quit saying "at this time" all the offending parties will be in the NFL or prison and the NCAA will be punishing people at Auburn who had exactly dick to do with Papa Newtons barn raising.

I'm sure if Auburn's in the NCG the "S.E.C" chants will rain out through the entire south though.

You could not be more wrong. The overwhelming majority of UGA fans are openly pulling for Spurrier (sacriledge) than having a tainted SEC BCS title.

I want Auburn to crash and burn - even if it means TCU in BCS final.

This x1,000,000,000

At the rate the FBI/IRS moves, it could be 10 years before the sentence for this is handed down from the NCAA after they have access to any relevant info from the federal investigation.

Of course, given that this is the SEC...I have no doubt the NCAA will have multiple major infractions to pile onto the punishment when the time comes. :sneaky: :paranoid:

The saddest thing is that the NCAA just opened up the floodgates for athletes to be shopped on the open market, with no penalty to the athlete so long as the player can maintain plausible deniability of any knowledge that he was being shopped around.

I'm still not one for paying players. I am now firmly in the camp that the NFL needs to fund a d-league for players with no desire to go to college for any other reason than getting to the league and by extension admit that Maurice Clarett was right. Players should be able to go to the NFL whenever they think they're ready. If they fail, they can drop back down to the minors for a few years.

The NFL saves tens of millions through the colleges performing the function of a minor league while giving NOTHING back. Hell, they and the NFLPA wouldn't even take the simple step of assuming responsibility for the agent debacle. It's time for universities to stand up to them.

In all seriousness, I simply do not see how anyone can come to that conclusion.

True, it might open the floodgates of stupid people making offers nobody will accept, that [strike]I might agree with[/strike] is something with which I can agree. :p All this will do is make compliance people even more heeby-jeebyish about anyone contacting their program about extra benefits, and make them damn sure that nothing exists that might make the NCAA view an action as an "agreement".

And, I expect this to be brought up at the next rule making conference and that the rules will less foggy about solicitation. You cannot shop if nobody is buying. If they buy they will be crucified, as they know that there is some bad press out there, and they will make Fresno State pay for Cam's sins.

Auburn and Cam will likely still get plunger raped. The fact that is will not happen this week does not open any floodgate.
