Cam Newton (QB New England Patriots)

Rogers, in an interview with ESPN 103.3 in Dallas, was asked if Cecil Newton ever told him how much money it would take to get his son to play for Mississippi State. "Yes he did," Rogers said. Asked how much, he said: "Anywhere between $100,000 and $180,000."
And not a penny more!

ESPNews is now reporting that Auburn's AD (Jay Jacobs) "will not comment on Cam Newton's status for Saturday's game".

So perhaps the rumors of his suspension were based on something solid.

Is he not commenting because...

A) Cam's status is unsure as of right now.

B) Cam is playing but Jay Jacobs is tired of answering questions about Cam so "stop asking".

Joe Schad's report didn't say why that's what the AD told him. But it's significant because the Auburn folks had been consistent with their "Cam's is eligible" position for the past week.

We've been here with Reggie Bush. Stop all of this, "I don't have to respond to..." nonsense. If you're clean, then just explicitly say that neither you nor your father, his church or anyone connected to you received money. It's really that simple.

From what understand, Cam had a statement already prepared but decided not to make it public because it was in somebody else's handwriting. He planned to make up a second statement, but couldn't down load it off the internet. It seems that his borrowed computer somehow was destroyed.

I agree. Makes you wonder if that's why they're not explicitly saying it.

It really is very simple. Noboby ever claimed that Cecil Newton wasn't a religious man.

NINE: 'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.'

There are different views on the meaning of this commandment. Some interpret the scope in the narrowest possible sense, as only a prohibition of lying in courtroom testimony. Other interpretations view the commandment as a prohibition on any false statement that degrades our neighbor?s reputation or dignity. Still others interpret the commandment in the broadest possible sense: as a prohibition on all lying.

Re: Cecil Newton said the family received a letter from the NCAA "about a month ago" asking for financial statements. He said he submitted bank statements and records for the church where he is pastor, Holy Zion Center of Deliverance in Newnan, Ga., along with other records.
The church has been in the news in Coweta County, Ga., often in the past year. According to stories in The Times-Herald newspaper, Cecil Newton's church was in danger of being demolished by order of the Newnan City Council in 2009 for failing to meet the city's building code. One story said Cecil Newton told the council last September the building would be brought to code "inside of six months." After numerous delays, extensions and compromises from the council, renovation work began last spring and The Times-Herald reported last week that the church is in compliance with Newnan's building requirements.
"If you've ever seen our church, you'd know we don't have any money," said Cam Newton's mother, Jackie. "We have nothing."
Holy Zion Center of Deliverance is not the only church Cecil Newton is involved in overseeing. Cam Newton told ESPN.com last month that his dad is a bishop to five churches in Georgia.

Where did the money to renovate the church come from?

From Atlanta Station Channel 2:

A source close to the situation exclusively told Channel 2 Action News investigative reporter Mark Winne that the player's father, Cecil Newton, has admitted having conversations with an ex-Mississippi State University player about the possibility of under-the-table money if Cam Newton signed to play football at Mississippi State, though he's steadfastly maintained that no money ever changed hands and said no official at Mississippi State ever made such an offer.

According to Winne’s source, Cecil Newton said his son’s hands are clean, and has made it clear that Cam Newton himself and his mother knew nothing about the money discussions, nor did Auburn University, with whom the Westlake High School grad from College Park eventually signed with out of junior college.

Winne’s source, who acknowledged sympathies on the Newton side of things, said the player and both parents have demonstrated a willingness to cooperate with the NCAA, beyond even the financial records turned over by the family, and from churches Cecil Newton oversees.

Watch Winne's exclusive report on the Channel 2 Action News Nightbeat at 11 p.m.

The MSU AD issues a short statement regarding MSU informing the SEC about the Newton affair:

"During the recruitment of a football prospective student-athlete, Mississippi State was approached with an offer to provide an extra benefit. The offer was refused."

"MSU alerted the Southeastern Conference about the offer. MSU did not have any specific incriminating information about any other school, and thus could not provide any."

"As Commissioner Slive mentioned today, the SEC is not an investigative body. MSU has cooperated fully and completely with the NCAA from the time it began asking for our assistance, and looks forward to providing any and all help in this ongoing investigation."

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive earlier expressed concern that MSU did not follow SEC guidelienes when reporting the matter.
