Cam Newton (QB New England Patriots)

In the end you have to be willing to separate the entertainer from the entertainment. I would never trust a guy like A-Rod to handle my money or babysit my kids but I'm not going to question how much I enjoy watching him play baseball because of his on-the-field talent.

It's the truly rare cases where the best players on the field are often the best people off the field. Unfortunately they are the furthest from the norm, so a bit of pessimism and realism are required to be a fan these days.
I guess I was unclear. I don't really blame the players much. I was comparing the institutions to the players which is what my concern is. I don't know how poor 18 year old kid is supposed to turn down the money. I do know how well educated people in athletic departments know it's wrong.

Particularly when 99.9% of college athletes are "poor" in contrast to that volume of cash (especially since there will be plenty of perks along the way also).

I wish there were a way to punish the adults much more harshly than the kids, particularly when the money is coming from dirty agents. That is a whole different level of predatory lending.

With the FBI involved this may be a possibility. I'd like to see some jail-time come out of this.

Well, it's likely somebody leaked it since records of such incidents should have been covered by FERPA.

I want to come back to this, and get insight from other BP folks in Higher Ed.

If I remember correctly, FERPA violations are pretty big deals- more than just the Athletic Department getting a slap on the Rodriguez.

From the above link:
Penalties for Violation of FERPA. Penalties for uncorrected violations may include a cutoff of federal funding to the institution.
Granted, this may not be an "institutional control" type of thing, but with the amount of media that this situation is getting, you've got to think that the Department of Education will be somewhat interested (especially now that the FBI is involved).

Makes the earlier articles in the Dispatch a lot more relevant, in my opinion.

What do you do with an undefeated Auburn team if Cam becomes ineligible in mid December?

If the FBI and the IRS starts to get involved, I think Cam and Auburn are not going to be as focused as they need to be going into the SEC title game. I have a feeling they are going to lose a game before December.
