Cal guy-I come in peace

Yeah I wish I had known about those things.

What I didn't tell the guy was that the kids actually started seeing dead relatives and fell out about half way through the forced march. At that point it was either give them medical attention or miss kickoff so I left them to their fate but fortunately Columbus is a nice town and they were still laying in the same spot we left them as we made our way back to the hotel after the game.

They don't remember much and my wife and I never bring it up so all's well that ends well and I'd stay there again.

I didn't realize Union Cemetery allowed you to exhume bodies.

I'm a retired old f-rt and though I'm a Cal season ticket holder, every year for the past few years, my wife and I have gone to at least one out of state major program/storied stadium college for a game. Usually they are not Cal games as Cal usually hangs around the coast. I was really pumped to see we are playing you guys in Columbus as tOSU and the horseshoe are on our short list.
The first thing I do is get Hotel reservations as a lot of schools sell out local hotels on gameday weekend pretty quickly. I made reservations at a Hilton Garden Inn that claimed to be a half mile from the stadium, but it looks like that's as the crow flies as it is on the other side of the river. Any suggestions? We like to just park at the hotel then walk to the game if we can.
Hope you don't mind me hanging around and asking questions over the next few months.
Thanks

If you have time and are so inclined, I can recommend Schmidts Sausage Haus in German Village. It's south of downtown but it's an easy cab ride from the campus area. It's a great sausage 'n kraut and German style beer kind of place. Always a great atmosphere before a big game and they typically have an oompah band (tuba and accordion) going. It's always crowded but you can get a beer while you wait for your table :)

I would say that if you want to get a "taste of Columbus" it's a can't miss.

Buckeye old fart here who spent some post grad school days at Bezerkeley and watched the bears play sitting midst the cedars on top of Tightwad Hill -- or was that Cheapskate Hill? -- especially a memorable The Game -- before the Stanford band had gone totally rogue- when they marched in red blazers and white pants with straw "caddies" guided by the Palo Alto and the foam rubber Hoover Tower -- which looked not unlike a marching dildo.

But I digress... not familiar with the Garden Inn... but there are several bridges across the river, at least one of which would not show up on anything but a large scale map. The walk is probably under a mile and a half and you could probably get a taxi to take you close, but get there early(!) as the window in which traffic near the stadium is moderate is slim, very slim.

I never drove to a Cal game as I lived just off University Blvd, near the COOP, and being a student, I was not adverse to walking. Game day in Columbus is a driver's exercise in patience and frustration. Best to arrive early, drink a few beers and eat a couple of brats, and repeat same after the game.

I will all but guarantee you that you will quickly receive a flock of invitations to join BP folk at their tailgate -- BB73 and I may be among them --
Be prepared to walk as only friends of the president have parking permits on the Stadium side of the river. These spots are guarded by a crack division of Columbus Bluecoats, armed to the teeth, surly in nature and short of temper. They rule the parking lots with an iron fist and a notable lack of a sense of humor.

Just Googled the Garden Inn at 32XX Olentangy. That's a hike, and though it doesn't look like it, the Olentangy is not your problem, it's Olentangy River Road. Not sure if there's a walkway on your side of the road until you get to... blow the map up and move it around until you see Ackerman/Dodridge... that's the far north edge of a nice walkway, past Chemical Abstracts, past the Alumni center and into the general stadium area. It's not a bad walk from Ackerman/Dodridge unless we have one of those 92 with the humidity in the 80s - Stockton-in-the-summer kind of days.

Thanks for the advice

We'll be getting into Columbus on Thursday night so we can visit the campus on Friday then go to the game on Saturday. On Friday we can drive around then on Saturday probably walk to the shoe. We're both 70, but a healthy active 70, so a 45 minute walk is no big deal. Our "preferred parking", (LOL), at Ca,l is a 30 minute walk.
Really looking forward to visiting your school, despite Muck's welcome.

This is a board well known for it's ball-busting. Don't take anything too personally. :)

Stay at one of the hotels downtown or a B&B in the Short North neighborhood. Campus is a mile cab ride straight up High Street, and for Friday night, the bars/restaurants will be both better and better suited for someone out of their early twenties.

I've stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn and other hotels in that area. I park my car for the weekend and walk everywhere. It's less aggravating and usually doesn't take any longer as you walk past cars sitting in line. It depends on how old you are and whether you walk regularly, and the weather. Early in the season, it should be quite nice.

I agree with the Schmidt's recommendation if you're willing to take a cab ride for dinner. Just save room for a cream puff for dessert.

If someone is driving who doesn't know the city, they could veer just a tiny bit off course and NOT be in any part of Columbus that a visitor should frequent. German Village is bordered by some pretty rough territory. I guess if you cab-it to and from then it should be OK.

As for being across the river: it's a very narrow river. Plus, the bridge leading to the stadium from Olentangy River Road has a nice wide sidewalk and lots of foot traffic on game day.

The Short North Arts District (between downtown & campus on N. High St.) is colorful, and has lots of shops & restaurants. Again (exercising an abundance of caution) stay in the neighborhood--esp. avoid going very far east of the area. If your game is on the first Saturday of the month, there will be a gallery hop--you won't be there alone.

If you need to do any general shopping, just south of campus on Olentangy is the Lennox shopping center. There's Target, Staples, Barnes & Noble, movie theatre, Cup-O-Joe coffee shop, etc. for the odd battery, tube of toothpaste, what-have-you.

Just west of Olentangy River Rd. & south of campus (turning west on W. 5th Avenue right after you pass the Lennox center) takes you into Grandview, which has lots of restaurants/bars/coffee shops. Nice area, too.

(My link's from "urbanspoon"--no pun intended.)

There's a fair range of cuisine available in Grandview, depending on what you're in the mood for. Jeni's ice cream has a killer sea salt/caramel, if you like that kinda stuff. :)

Blackwell Inn, isn't that where the players stay the night before?

Whenever I have tried booking a room there on football weekend, there has never been any availability, even several months before.

The Red Roof Inn on Olentangy is likely the closest, and a decent crowd. However...it IS the Red Roof Inn.

Fairfield Inn OSU a little further north of campus is a nice hotel (but a long walk). When I stayed there for the Miami (FLA) game, there were a ton of visiting fans staying there. This hotel is surprisingly quiet for all the football fans that stay here! Maybe a 30 minute walk...I'm 47, and HATE IT! (the long walk). I recommend having the hotel call a taxi for you and keep the number for a ride back later. *A long part of this walk involves no sidewalk..(.I twisted my knee....but that was after a few cold ones at the Varsity Club on Lane Avenue). **unfortunately there really are no good restaurants within walking distance of this hotel (Damon's has been torn down)....well....there is an Applebee's neaby which is "ok".

Restaurant: Eddie George's Bar and Grill Thursday or Friday night would be a good choice if you want a sports bar with excellent food and drinks.

Sushi? This is a great restaurant north of OSU on Old Henderson Road: http://www.akaihanaohio.com/

Buckeye Grill: I have never eaten here, but understand that for a small fee they shuttle you to and from campus. http://www.buckeyegrill.com/ Buckeye Grill is located near Hyatt OSU (see below).

***I sure do miss the Holiday Inn on Lane :o(

***Some friends stayed at a downtown hotel a couple years ago that had a shuttle bus to campus on football Saturdays. I will try to find out this information for you.

**Here it is: Hyatt Place OSU they shuttle you to a place 5 minutes from the stadium (but not back)...take a taxi back to your hotel I guess: http://columbusosu.place.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/place/index.jsp This looks like a pretty good choice actually. This may be my destination this year!

Hope this helps, Best Regards, Mark
