2024 CA OL Brandon Baker (Texas Verbal)

I guess if he thinks MHJ wouldn't be a first round pick unless he went to OSU.

I think all the people who go on about taking less NIL money and betting on the big NFL pay day either don't understand the time value of money concept or are just being incredibly disingenuous with the advice to kids.

Before it was ok to get paid, the narrative was to "get your degree so you have something to fall back on because you never know with the NFL." Now it's "take less money now, so you have less to fall back on because we can make you more NFL money"

What's changed? Why is the NFL a thing to bet on now where before it was just a nice to have and the education was what mattered most?

From where I sit, the only constant is coaches and fans of a program creating a self serving narrative that makes them feel like their school is the best choice for a kid while giving two shits if that narrative is true or if their school is actually better for the kid.

Until we have, if we ever do, the math of the difference in NIL money one place offered vs another we really have no idea of what the kid would be risking to be better developed one place vs another.

I haven't heard that "degree" argument for ~20 years without thinking it was malarkey.
And rare to encounter it around these parts, though im sure it still gets play in places like mgo, bucknuts, twitter, and bevo.
Even Tressel, out the gate, admitted if you were a round1-3 pick it wasn't worth staying. That got revised to any draft pick, then even ufa. Most universities inherently recognized this by honoring scholarships to alumni that went pro.

Just speaking from experience in Texas, but legal NIL made most Texans hearts sing. Now what they were doing under the table is above board. Too much Texas oil money sloshing around, so what I'm implying is that if Brandon is looking at the Benjamins, UT is in. The 'oilman's club' is present in many cities, and are swankier than most restaurants around. Hopefully tOSU's OL gets better, so Brandon can see a benefit to coming up north to tOSU. PS, it seems that looking at preseason magazines, all the top players are juniors, which seems to indicate that the pros have harvested the senior class already. Go Bucks!

Five-star OL Brandon Baker sets commitment date, will announce on 247Sports YouTube channel

Baker will announce his commitment later this month on his birthday, Sept. 24.

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei offensive lineman Brandon Baker has locked in his commitment date and will announce on the 247Sports YouTube channel. Baker will commit on Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. PT (9 p.m. ET).

Baker is a five-star prospect, rated the No. 21 player nationally in the 247Sports Composite and No. 24 in the Top247.

“Sept. 24 is my birthday, so I felt like it was a good time to announce,” Baker said. “It has been a really fun process, but I have a good idea what I want to do and I’m ready to get this done.”
He officially visited Georgia, Ohio State and Texas back in June and has taken several unofficial visits to Oregon. At this time a year ago, the Ducks looked like a heavy leader but in recent months, the Buckeyes and Longhorns have had most of the buzz.

“I liked all my visits but Ohio State was probably my favorite one,” Baker said. “I just really like the coaches there, coach Day and I’m very close with coach (Justin) Frye.

“He might be the OL coach I’m closest with and I really like the plan they have in place for me.”
