C Jantel Lavender - 4-time Big Ten Player of the Year (LA Sparks)

If you're talking about Candace Parker, she had another year of eligibility due to a redshirt season from a knee injury, but she had finished four years of college and was thus eligible for the draft. Plus, with the tight salary cap, there's little incentive to go early even if you could.

Lavender averaged 25.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and shot 62.5 percent from the field as the 15th-ranked Buckeyes moved back into sole possession of first place in the Big Ten standings.
The sophomore opened the week with a season-high 30-point performance Thursday to lead the Buckeyes as they toppled Illinois, 68-51. Lavender tied her career-high with 15 field goals, shooting 62.5 percent from the floor, also grabbing 12 rebounds to record her Big Ten-leading 14th double-double of the year.
On the road against Purdue Sunday, the Cleveland, Ohio, native scored 15 of her 21 points in a closely contested second half to give Ohio State a 71-60 victory. She shot 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the field and had seven rebounds and two blocks in the win.
Lavender upped her Big Ten-leading averages to 21.6 ppg and 11.1 rpg and is the only player in Division I to rank among the Top 10 in both categories.
The weekly honor is the eighth of her career, which ties her for fourth all-time in the conference and sets a new Big Ten record for awards won by a player in her freshman and sophomore seasons. She shares the weekly honor with Penn State?s Tyra Grant.
Ohio State is back in action Thursday at Michigan before returning home Sunday to face Indiana. Game time is set for 4 p.m.

Congratulations!!!!!!:):):):)

Two noteworthy 5's occurred this week. Jantel was named Big Ten Player of The Week for a 5th time this year, which ties the record. (Her 9 selections is tied for third most in a career).

bigten

And her selection as Player of the Year is the fifth stright year in which an Ohio State center has received the award, since Jessica Davenport won it for 3 straight seasons before Jantel became the first freshman to ever win the award last year.

If my math is correct, Jantel is only 42 points from surpassing Katie Smith's first two seasons scoring totals.

I didn't look up a # of games comparison (with Big Ten Tourney & Post Season differences, etc.) but regarless of that it's obviously a very, very impressive first two Seasons for Miss Lavender.

Congrats to her and the rest of the team on their Big Ten Championship as well as all their individual accolades.

She is just so impressive in all facets of her game for a young lady of her size. I don't know if she will get any All-American mention but I certainly can't see that coming next year and it won't surprise me at all to see her win Big 10 POY 4 years in a row.

Ohio State's Jantel Lavender named second-team All-American in women's college basketball

Whether or not she delivers a national championship, Courtney Paris will leave Oklahoma with quite a legacy: the only four-time All-American in women's college basketball.

Kiichiro Sato / Associated PressOhio State center Jantel Lavender (42), a Cleveland Central Catholic graduate, averaged 20.8 points and 10.7 rebounds per game for the Buckeyes this season.

"I'm truly honored to be the first," said Paris, who already holds 18 NCAA records. "I'm sure that will happen with Maya Moore in the next couple of years." The sensational sophomore Moore is on pace to join the Oklahoma center in two years after making the Associated Press' All-America team for the second consecutive season Tuesday. She was joined by UConn teammate Renee Montgomery, marking the first time since 2000 that two players from the same school made the first team.
"It is nice because whenever you get recognized you always want your teammates to get recognized also, because you know you wouldn't be here without them," Montgomery said. "To have another teammate on a team like this makes you feel good."
Angel McCoughtry of Louisville and Kristi Toliver of Maryland rounded out the first team.

She collected 24 double-doubles while leading the Buckeyes (29-6) to a fifth consecutive Big Ten regular-season championship and to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

Lavender is OSU female athlete of year

Jantel Lavender was recognized today as he female athlete of the year by Ohio State. It would be hard to argue with the choice.

Along the way, she led the Big Ten in scoring (20.0), rebounding (9.9) and shooting percentage (54.9 percent). She also set a conference record with 374 total rebounds and helped the Buckeyes reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Summer stuff

Saw them play monday. Especially interested in the newbies Emilee and Tayler. Wow was I impressed. I am sure many on this board have seen Emilee play in HS but I have not. I did see one all star game where she handled well and dished 4 or 5 assists with some really fine passing but I hadn't seen her shoot much or show her athleticism. This girl can jump! She can also get her shot off her dribble, something I have not seen many six-two's do. She only tried one longish shot and yes, I know I only have limited data here...but it was still a thrill to see her pick up her dribble, rise into clear air and hit a 14 footer. Well I estimate about that length because they are playing on a floor that is marked for tennis! As a spectator you have no idea where the foul line or the three point arc are. The players and the refs. seem to know though, so I guess it all works. As for Tayler her first shot was a long airball and later she bricked a medium length jumper in traffic but the rest of her threes were perfection. Four or five big arching shots that never touched iron. She can handle well enough and seems to like attacking the basket and getting fouled, this always helps. Both need work on defense.
