C Jantel Lavender - 4-time Big Ten Player of the Year (LA Sparks)

183.s600x600.jpg

I had an opportunity to speak with the rookie & first round draft pick center Jantel Lavender about this season and what she's looking forward to bring to this team "Just want to be the anchor of the defense, help out wherever I can. The training camps have been intense, but we are a team, when one girl may go down, some one like Candace [Parker] or Delisha will step right in and continue the play." I asked how she liked Southern California "I like it, I haven been to too many places yet, but I like it". Lavender is definitely going to be a defensive presence in the middle, where opposing offenses will have alter shots or even pass the ball, which will give the Sparks time to swarm on other teams offenses.

Lavender Named OSU Female Athlete of the Year
Courtesy: OhioStateBuckeyes.com
Release: 06/16/2011

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Jantel Lavender, who was named 2011 First Team WBCA, Associated Press and USBWA All-America, has been named Ohio State?s 2010-11 Female Athlete of the Year. The only four-time Big Ten player of the year, Lavender was fifth in the NCAA with 22.8 points this season and led the Big Ten with 10.9 rebounds in leading the Buckeyes to their second Sweet 16 appearance in three years. The Buckeyes finished the season 24-10 with a 10-6 mark in the Big Ten.

This is the second Ohio State Athlete of the Year honor for Lavender, who also picked up the accolade in 2009, and it is the 10th time a women?s basketball player has been named Ohio State?s best female athlete since the award started in 1983. She is the fifth woman to be a two-time honoree, joining women?s basketball standouts Jessica Davenport (2006, ?07) and Katie Smith (1994, ?06), track?s Donica Merriman (2000, ?01) and Stacey Gordon from women?s volleyball (2003, ?05). Lavender is one of 11 nominees for the Big Ten Suzy Favor Award.

Lavender was the Big Ten co-player of the year (media) in 2011, becoming the first women?s or men?s basketball player in conference history to earn the award four times and the only women?s basketball player among the Big Ten, ACC, Big East, Big 12, Pac-10 or SEC to accomplish the feat. She was the Big Ten tournament most outstanding player for a record third year after averaging 23.7 points per game, 12.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists while shooting 63.8 percent from the field in the three wins. She also set a Big Ten tournament single-game scoring record with 37 points in the semifinal win over No. 1 seed Michigan State.

Lavender, who earned her bachelor?s degree in sport and leisure studies March 20, leaves as Ohio State?s all-time leading scorer with 2,818 points and the Big Ten?s all-time leading rebounder with 1,422. She scored in double-figures in all 136 career games, an NCAA record.

In April, Lavender was selected fifth overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA Draft.

Only Time Will Jantel? ? The WNBA, believe it or not, already has had its All-Star game and games will take on more importance in the second half of the season. The Los Angeles Sparks are off to a rough 6-8 start and currently are second-to-last in the Western Conference, but there is still time for a turnaround and run at a playoff spot. Step one is Tuesday night in Minnesota against the first-place Lynx.

I bring this up because former Buckeye Jantel Lavender, the team?s top draft pick, could be ready to start making an impact. The 6-4 Lavender has started only one game but has played in all 14 and is averaging 6.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per contest.

The Sparks have a qualified star in Candace Parker, who is back healthy and sporting a team best scoring average of 17.7 ppg. But their bigs, especially veteran Tina Thompson, have struggled from the floor. Look for Lavender?s minutes and production to go up as she begins to latch onto the WNBA way. And look for her to make a difference.

After all, she is the only four-time league player of the year in the history of BCS conference athletics.

WNBA STAR to JUDGE:
My Ex Scares the CRAP Outta Me!

You'd think the WNBA would be desperate for spectators -- but a player on the L.A. Sparks wants one fan to stay the hell away ... and she's asking for a restraining order to make sure that happens.

Sparks center Jantel Lavender filed the request for a restraining order last week -- asking a judge to keep her ex-boyfriend Adam Ashley at least 50 yards away from her and her family at all times ... including games.

According to the docs, Adam attended a recent Sparks game and followed Jantel home -- where the two got into a screaming match and Adam attempted to punch her.

The fight went on all night -- and Jantel claims she eventually called the police to kick Adam out. Jantel claims she had to call the police AGAIN the next day -- when Adam came back to continue his "angry rampage."

A judge will decide whether to grant the restraining order on September 6.

L.A. Sparks rookie Jantel Lavender -- the #5 overall pick in the 2011 WNBA Draft -- allegedly kneed her ex-BF in the junk so hard, his groin area was "throbbing from the pain" ... this according to legal docs obtained by TMZ.

According to court papers filed in L.A. County Superior Court, Lavender's ex Adam Ashley obtained a temporary restraining order against the 6'4" athlete two weeks ago ... claiming he's been "in hiding" ever since a July 5 altercation where Lavender allegedly grabbed a knife and threatened to kill him.
