i don't think ohio state has ever had the ms. basketball and mr. basketball of ohio come to play for them in the same year. this is pretty big for our basketball programs to keep the two top b-ball players in men's and women's at our school.
GO BUCKS!!!

Ohio State's Lavender, USA U19 Women Claim 64-62 Exhibition Win Over Australia

SANTA CRUZ DE LA PALMA, Canary Islands (July 19, 2007) ? Led by 14 points from Monica Wright (Virginia / Woodbridge, Va.) and 10 points from Maya Moore (Collins Hill H.S. / Lawrenceville, Ga.), the USA Women?s U19 World Championship Team withstood a resilient Australian squad to secure a late, 64-62 win in the first of three exhibition contests in Santa Cruz de La Palma, Canary Islands, Thursday evening.
?There was a lot of good play, but basically we made a ton of mistakes,? said USA U19 and DePaul University (Ill.) head coach Doug Bruno. ?I think that?s to be expected with how little time we?ve had to practice, but we have to clean up our game, and we won?t make any excuses.
?We had some opportunities where we were in position to put the game away, and we didn?t. We don?t know each other well enough yet. The coaches don?t know the players yet, and it?s just been too fast. But that?s why we are here in the Canary Islands?to come together as a team.?
Bruno is being assisted on the sidelines by Cynthia Cooper-Dyke of Prairie View A&M University (Texas) and Carol Owens of Northern Illinois University.
Both teams struggled to shoot from the floor throughout, and the USA headed into the final stanza nursing a 49-44 lead. From there, Australia slowly closed the narrow gap and cut the U.S. lead to two, 60-58 at 2:40. Katie Ebzery then finished an old-fashioned 3-point play to give the Aussies their first fourth quarter advantage, 61-60, with just 1:58 remaining.

It's all about attitude now for Lavender
Playing with edge, freshman bolsters Buckeyes down low

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
When Ohio State freshman center Jantel Lavender rose to meet a rebound Thursday night against the Indiana women's basketball team, she did so with two hands and a look on her face that said sharing was the last thing on her mind. Fifteen games into her collegiate career, Lavender decided to sharpen her edge after a discussion with OSU coach Jim Foster following the loss of power forward Star Allen to grades.
"Coach had a talk with me," Lavender said. "It's my time with Star being out. Our rebounds were going down, because she was an excellent rebounder. It was like I do have to be better because in a couple of games I wasn't as active on the boards as I should be."
She finished with 14 rebounds against the Hoosiers, posted the seventh double-double of her career and the Buckeyes (12-3, 3-1) won their third consecutive Big Ten game.
"I took it upon myself to rebound," Lavender said. "It's an attitude."

Bob Hunter commentary: Lavender already an inside force like Davenport

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

When Jantel Lavender was asked whether she had used more hook shots in a game last night than she had all season, the Ohio State freshman had more trouble with the question that she did with any of the Penn State defenders.

She stammered, paused and grinned.
"I guess you could say that," she said. "It's just that when it's there I just use it ..."
Seated to her right, Jim Foster looked over at his future and smiled.
"She'll have great answers in about a year and a half," the Ohio State coach said, "when she understands exactly what it is she's doing. Because right now she's a work in progress and she knows it."
He's right, of course, but anyone seeing her for the first time in an 89-53 win over Penn State last night would have a difficult time believing it. Lavender scored 22 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field. She had nine rebounds, one block and no turnovers, all in 28 minutes.
