OHIO STATE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Ohio State Buckeyes women's basketball team stumbles onto gold mind with Jantel Lavender

Columbus- She's the Oprah of the offense, a shoulder to cry on but an elbow to avoid. She'll solve your problems while she boxes you out.
Always that friend who knows best, Ohio State freshman Jantel Lavender plans to major in psychology - "I like things about life," she said - and, after women's basketball, seems likely to spend her time fixing what ails you. That comes from her nature and her nur ture.
"We look at the deeper side of things," said her mother, Robin. "She is such an empathetic child. People do gravitate toward her."

On the court, that's not such a good idea. Ask Illinois' Jenna Smith, Lavender's competition as the Big Ten's best post player, and she talks first of Lavender's physical strength, her ability to sit on you in the lane and own her place.
"I like physical games," Lavender said. "I like to throw 'bows sometimes, too. Sometimes 'bows are going to be thrown. It's not that serious."
But the Big Ten coaches who must devise plans to stop her don't focus on Lavender's physical attributes.

Women's basketball: Coaches name OSU's Lavender Big Ten player of year

The Big Ten women's basketball coaches liked enough of what they saw from Ohio State center Jantel Lavender in her first season to select her as the conference player of the year and unanimously as the freshman of the year.

The league media also unanimously voted Lavender as the Big Ten's top freshman but chose Wisconsin senior guard Jolene Anderson as the player of the year. Lavender is the first freshman to be voted player of the year in men's or women's basketball.

Jazmine Lavender, left, has been a steadying influence on her younger sister, Jantel, the co-Big Ten Player of the Year. She offers Jantel support as one of Ohio State's team managers.

Jazmine Lavender, offering a hand slap to sister Jantel as she comes to the bench, isn't afraid to voice constructive criticism.

The inevitable first question becomes as old hat to every set of twins as John Wayne wearing a white Stetson. "Which one of you is older?"
Jazmine Lavender raised her right hand within the same heartbeat that her sister, Jantel, joined a surround-sound sentence ending with "by 46 minutes."
"She's my little big sister," a laughing Jantel said.
"She's my big little sister," Jazmine corrected while turning the laugh into another stereo moment.
Followers of Ohio State women's basketball should recognize Jantel Lavender by reputation and on sight. A 6-foot-4 freshman center, Jantel was named co-Big Ten player of the year after leading the Buckeyes to a share of the regular-season conference championship.
At 5-8, Jazmine is not as easy to spot on the bench even though she has been by her sister's side all season as one of the team's managers.

College basketball: Lavender chosen Big Ten preseason player of year

Monday, October 27, 2008 3:03 AM
By Jim Massie and Bob Baptist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CHICAGO -- Ohio State sophomore Jantel Lavender wasn't exactly surprised yesterday after learning that the Big Ten women's basketball coaches and media selected her as the preseason player of the year. The only unanimous choice on the two all-conference teams, Lavender would later hear from OSU coach Jim Foster that preseason honors don't come with a banquet. She still planned the use the vote of confidence for motivation.
"It is something that makes me want to work harder," said Lavender, who shared the award with Wisconsin's Jolene Anderson at the end of last season. "It's not going to stress me out. I'm going to have it in my mind that I'm predicted to be the Big Ten player of the year again. I need to make that come into actuality. It's a great award and I want to win it."
Even before the team's first practice, Foster had seen striking improvements in Lavender. She played for USA Basketball in the summer before her freshman season and missed the team's weightlifting program. She stayed in Columbus this summer and attacked the weight room.
"She obliterated every record we have in the weight room," Foster said. "And she also spent a lot of time working on her three-point shot over the summer."

It's amazing just watching her play. She does such a good job and it's mostly effortlessly!! I say keep of the good work Jantel and I'm truly glad that you chose OSU ~ GO BUCK!!!

Watching her work with Prahalis is a thing of beauty. And unlike the men's team we can look forward to two more years of that combo.
