C Greg Oden (All B1G, All-American, Defensive Player of the Year, Butler Assistant Coach)

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/miamiheat/post/_/id/20322/this-is-why-miami-signed-greg-oden

This is why Miami signed Greg Oden
INDIANAPOLIS -- Greg Oden was an objective bystander at the time, but he remembers the series vividly.

Between the workouts in hopes of reviving his NBA career and the trips back to his college campus at Ohio State, Oden made time in his schedule to closely watch the Eastern Conference finals last season.

LeBron James and the Heat were in a back-and-forth flurry with the Indiana Pacers, and Oden couldn’t help but to notice how hard Miami was struggling to deal with 7-foot-2 headache Roy Hibbert.

“It was one of the best [stretches] I’ve seen him play,” Oden said of Hibbert, who averaged 22.1 points and 10.2 rebounds in the conference finals. “He definitely was in a groove when that was going on.”

The Heat won the series with a Game 7 blowout in Miami, but they never lost sight of the growing impact and threat Hibbert poses for the two-time defending champions. The Heat signed Oden and invested in his comeback from a four-year layoff with hopes he can help to disrupt Hibbert’s groove.

For some reason, when Hibbert has faced Miami the past few seasons, he tends to channel his inner Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. With Oden, who is expected to make his sixth start of the season in Wednesday’s game against Indiana, Miami can counter Hibbert with someone he can pick on closer to his own size.

Greg Oden: ‘I know I’m one of the biggest busts in NBA history’

“I know I’m one of the biggest busts in NBA history and I know that it’ll only get worse as Kevin Durant continues doing big things … It’s frustrating that my body can’t do what my mind wants it to do sometimes. But worrying or complaining about it isn’t going to fix anything … I wish the circumstances would let me play more, but I certainly don’t regret coming back, and I don’t regret signing with the Heat."
.
.
.
The important thing here is that Oden has maintained a peace of mind that seemed to elude him in Portland. He spoke about problems with alcohol and depression during those years, and he’s a good example of how the perspective that comes with experience can aid an NBA player both on and off the court. We started to see that development during a post-game interview last fall, when Oden noted that he was just “happy to be able to walk off the court,” and these latest comments are notable for their lack of bitterness.

There’s nothing that Oden can do to match Durant’s greatness and there’s nothing he can really do about his knees, except put in the work. Call Oden a bust if you must, but give him credit for his diligent rehabilitation and his honest, clear-headed approach to his tortuous basketball existence.

on the bright side...he is finically set for life...good head on his shoulders...

the kevin durant love-fest doesn't help everyone calling him a bust...but, i mean the guy has career altering knee injuries..

if healthy greg oden would have been the number 1 center in the game today...

portland did a terrible job with brandon roy too...his career never was the same..

It's a crying fucking shame that his body betrayed him. He could have been one of the best ever. Like Max said, I'll always be thankful he and Mike chose tOSU, and I'll always be a fan. Give'em hell, Greg.

Completely Spot-On.

I guess Greg is harder on himself than I will ever be, because I don't consider him a "bust" at all.

A ""Bust" to me isn't just a high pick that never lives up to expectations, thats the easy way out. A "Bust" in my opinion needs to meet one of two criteria:
1. Competes at a level that is no where near what the expectations of him were or:
2. Off the field issues prevent him from reaching the "potential" expected of him.

Greg meets neither of these. His health never let him have a chance to "compete" and off the court he's a model citizen.

I wish this kid nothing but the best in anything he does in life, and thank him for that one joyous season he gave to us as Buckeye fans. Hope he gets a ring this year, and that somehow (he's still a young guy) his health improves to the point that he can be a major contributor to whatever team he plays on in the future.

I hope like hell that Greg realizes how much BuckeyeNation loves and appreciates him. I could comb through his entire thread but that would take a week, so I'll just go out on a limb and say that there has never been a negative post about him (by somebody NOT banned) on this site.

Peace

Miami Heat’s Greg Oden and Michael Beasley await Pacers after Nets

Greg Oden and Michael Beasley, two of the more high profile draft busts in NBA each for different reasons, are still sitting at the end of the Miami Heat bench and waiting for a chance to prove that they’re not busts for a second time. Both were added by the salary cap-strapped Heat as veteran-minimum insurance policies, and both have seen some degree of playing time during the regular season. But neither has yet to make a meaningful appearance in the postseason, and both are hoping to get a shot at doing so when the Heat inevitably face the Indiana Pacers in the next round.
Greg Oden, the former number one overall pick whose knees sabotaged his career from day one, was signed by Miami at least partially so it could put more inside bulk on the court to match the Pacers bulk

I'd love to see Oden go out there and put a schooling on Hibbert's overrated ass.

Don't know that Hibbert's overrated at this point . . .

Just depends on which Roy Hibbert shows up to play:

Game 1 vs Wizards: The 7-foot-2, two-time All-Star center finished with zero points (on 0-for- 2 shooting), zero rebounds, one assist, two blocks, two turnovers and five fouls on Monday, posting a team-worst minus-17 in 18 minutes of action.

Game 2 vs Wizards: The 7-foot-2 All-Star shot 10 for 13 and finished with 28 points and nine rebounds in the Pacers’ 86-82 home victory Wednesday. In the first 56 seconds alone, he won the opening tip, hit a jumper from near the foul line as the shot clock expired, then turned in a three-point play for a 5-0 lead. Fittingly, the game ended with the basketball in Hibbert’s hands on a rebound.
