Oden's odyssey leads to one place -- NBA

January 5, 2007
BY HERB GOULD Staff Reporter
It's always dangerous to put labels on athletes before their time has come. Remember when LeBron James was being anointed as ''the next Michael Jordan,'' most likely by NBA marketing types? Maybe that'll work out. Maybe not.

Campus

There is a lot of speculation that Oden will leave OSU after this year. I highly doubt it. You want to know why? He loves it here. I have met him a few times, thanks to my friendship with Mark Titus. Titus has played with Oden in high school games (Titus from Indiana). Along with Titus is Conley, who, as everyone knows, was Oden's best friend and teammate at LN. Everywhere on campus, the two are practically inseperable. Conley's playing time has been limited due to Butler being the older player. He will continue to get more playing time, but it may not be enough for him to get a high enough draft stock to leave this year. Oden loves these two guys a lot and I don't see him seperating from them any time soon. Also, Oden is an honors student and likes school and learning.

Oden knows, and the whole world knows, whenever he goes pro, he will be the number one pick. There is no doubt about it. Every team will pick Oden over the likes of Joakim Noah, Durant, OJ Mayo and any other prospect. It is a given.

Why rush to make millions when he knows he has something here that is special: a home and a lot of friends.

on top of that (even though he would be the #1 pick based on potential)I don't think his offensive game is ready.

....however he his probably the most dominating player on the defensive end of the court that I have ever seen in college.

Don't get me wrong, I hope he stays, but theres no way. All it takes is one awkward fall to tear something in a knee, or a similar devastating injury to damage his career. Why continue risking injury at OSU while making no money, when he could be in the NBA making millions?

I don't think his right had is 100%. Once it fully heals his offensive game may be "ready".

People said the same thing about him attending college before the 1-year rule was put in place, yet that was always his plan.

Greg does like school and he is a very bright kid -- bright enough to know that the $10M or so he would make next year is $10M he will never get back if he passes it up. He will be in the NBA next year as the #1 pick. He knows his game is not where he will dominate everybody his first year, but it shouldn't be there yet -- he is 18. Over the three years of his rookie contract he will learn from the best and get the experience he needs to dominate for 10+ years after that. Going to the Olympic camp last year showed him that he can play with the NBA guys.

Contract

He couldn't make $10 Million in his first year. It would be somewhere like half that due to NBA max contract rules. Plus, he isn't exactly a face for advertising. He won't be losing out on as much money as you think.

He will easily get $5-8M per year in a shoe deal and other endorsements. Reebok has already thrown out a number of $30-40M for a shoe deal alone. And I expect him to land several endorsement deals -- not due to his looks but his character. Given the culture of pro sports and the relatively few "good people" playing, big corporations will be lining up to sign somebody of Greg's character.
