Mighty dunks say it loud and wow: Oden is ready!

LOS ANGELES -- Brandon Roy smiled Wednesday night because the rest of the NBA could finally see what he and his teammates have been witnessing for the past month: Greg Oden playing a dominant role for the Trail Blazers.
In his best performance of the preseason, Oden displayed power, touch and intimidation during a 12-point, 13-rebound performance that helped the Blazers beat the Los Angeles Clippers 87-75 at the Staples Center in their penultimate exhibition game.
"What he's showing you -- we've seen it," Roy said. "He's just starting to do it in games. He's just getting more comfortable out there. He even cracked a couple smiles when I was out there joking with him. And then, I was like, 'Yeaaaaah, Greg's back.' He's slowly coming into his own."

Blazers embark on Oden eraPosted 49m ago

By Anne M. Peterson, AP Sports Writer

PORTLAND, Ore. Greg Oden isn't as concerned about living up to the hype surrounding his rookie year as he is about diffusing it.
Oden turned down two national magazines that wanted to put him on their covers. And after a dunk to open his first preseason game he has kept a relatively low profile - well, as low a profile as a 7-footer can keep.
"Look, I'm just a rookie," he said, "I haven't done anything yet."
Expectations are high all around for the Portland Trail Blazers' upcoming season, and understandably much of the focus is on Oden.

Reward doesn't lead to a Clippers victory - Los Angeles Times
Reward doesn't lead to a Clippers victory

...

Pregame chatter landed, briefly, on the Sacramento Kings' Kevin Martin, who collected $1,000 from teammate Mikki Moore for a two-handed dunk over 7-footer Greg Oden of the Trail Blazers on Monday in Sacramento.

The Clippers' Ricky Davis, taking a break from his pre-game dinner, came up with another number. Why be predictable and imitate someone else?

Davis threw it down: $500 for dunking on Oden.

"I'll leave it up to you all three," he said.

That caught the attention of rookies Eric Gordon and DeAndre Jordan and second-year man Al Thornton.

Gordon, in particular, since he was about to play his high school friend and rival Oden for the first time as a pro.

Just to make sure . . . the challenge, and potential reward, was issued to only those three players?

Cont'd ...
Ricky Davis ... the same dirt bag that once tried to deliberately miss a shot at his own basket just to record a rebound and get his first triple-double, the same tool that once tried a slam-dunk contest worthy between-the-legs routine on a break away during the middle of a regular season game, but missed, and the same ass hat that chairs his own fan club.

All you need to know about Ricky Davis is right there: He'd rather pay a teammate $500 to dunk on Oden because he's too chickenshit to try it himself. Oh, and he's a cheapskate too, since the going rate in the league for the dunk-on-Oden bounty is apparently $1,000.

How good is Oden? Ten year NBA vets are coming up with cash incentives to get their teammates to try and do something they're already being paid to do.

I guess what I don't understand is that there have been other rookie centers enter the NBA the same size as Greg but I have never read these types of stories on those other guys. I don't know if they think they can intimidate him or what. Very confusing to say the least.

Nah, it's because they're fucking scared of him. They use money to motivate them to do what they're to chickenshit to do otherwise. That way, when the majority fucking fail, and someone says "Why in the world did you try that?", they'll say they did it for the money, and they'll think they don't look as stupid, and they'll be wrong.

Get 'em Greg. Block everyone of those sorry sonsabitches so hard, when they retrieve the fucking ball, it has stickers on it from other countries.

Meh.

When I read that article, I thought Greg had been posterized.

Not even close to the case. Martin made a good move to the basket, and Greg was a step too slow. But it wasn't anything too special. Greg didn't get knocked off his feet or anything like that.

I agree that Ricky is an asshat, but I really don't think there is anything wrong with what the Clippers did. How is it different, really, from betting on a game of HORSE?

I also think this is a big indicator of how much respect Greg is already getting from his NBA colleagues. He will be the top center in the game within the next 2 seasons.

Greg Oden receives a warm welcome from Blazers fans as he makes his preseason debut. Portland's waiting process for Oden's rookie season is almost near its end.

Finally, Oden ready for prime time in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. ? In another place, involving someone else, the moment might've meant nothing. But when Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden rolled his ankle during the team's first training camp practiceSept. 30, it sent this city into a tizzy.
"Our phone lines lit up," says Jason Swygard, executive producer of the city's prime-time sports radio talk show (ESPN 1080 The Fan). "No question, Greg Oden, right now, is the most scrutinized person in Portland."
Since Oden, the No. 1 draft pick in 2007, missed all of last season following microfracture surgery on his right knee, his health is big news.
