BREAKING NEWS: Oden's summer league could be over

Categories: Summer League

The Trail Blazers on Monday determined that Greg Oden could need a tonsillectomy by the end of the week, thereby jeopardizing his availability for the rest of the team's summer league action in Las Vegas.

A final decision has not been made - Oden said he wanted to consult his mother first - but it appears likely that Oden will fly to Portland late this week for surgery after he finishes presenting an award Wednesday in a taping of the ESPYs in Los Angeles. Recovery for adults who undergo a tonsillectomy is two weeks.

"My gosh, today especially in the scrimmages, he was as dominant as we have seen him,'' Pritchard said. "He is getting mad, and upset, and showing some toughness. Good lord, how much more does he need to show us? I mean, he's not feeling well, and yet he is playing through it.''

Oden was bashful in rating his play after the two scrimmages, noting that the Blazers played without LaMarcus Aldridge, who was given the day off.

"LaMarcus wasn't out there to take over, so I had to try and step up and do something offensively," Oden said. "But Joel (Freeland) also stepped up big. But the last game (against the Clippers), I stepped up and did more offensively, and did well."

Report: Oden to have tonsils removed later this week

Portland-area hospitals may wish to stock up on ice cream for the arrival of a very big patient.
The Portland Trail Blazers will shut down rookie center Greg Oden's summer league season after two games so the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft can have his tonsils removed, The Oregonian of Portland reported.

According to the report, the team has decided Oden's swollen tonsils need to come out in the next three-to-four days because they are obstructing his breathing, which in turn is limiting his stamina.

"Right now, it's more of a thing that they are so big, that when I'm running up and down the court, it's hard for me to breathe," Oden said Monday after scrimmages with the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Clippers, The Oregonian reported. "I can't get any air in there." While a final decision on surgery has yet to be made, it appears likely Oden will have the procedure done late this week, after taping the ESPY awards show in Los Angeles on Wednesday, the newspaper reported. According to the team and Oden's camp, he is expected to recover in about two weeks.

Like the kids at this luncheon, you weren't given the opportunity to go straight to the pros from high school. Having gone through a year of college, is the NBA's new age limit rule a wise one, in your mind?

It's a very wise rule because you get to become a young man. See, what I'm going through right now is crazy, with the draft and moving to Portland and media. If I didn't have the college experience, I'd be crying on the phone to my mom every night. And I do plan to go back to school. I want an Ohio State degree, and not all of their classes are online, so it might have to be after I retire.

Even seven-footers get butterflies in their stomachs. At least that's what Portland Trail Blazers rookie center Greg Oden admitted to regarding the circumstances surrounding his debut games at the Vegas Summer League last week.
Despite taking his team to the NCAA Final game and winning countless awards for his achievements, including two consecutive PARADE High School Player of the Year Awards, two consecutive Gatorade National Player of the Year Awards, the Naismith Prep Player of the Year Award, the Big-10 Defensive Player of the Year, and being named to the AP All-American First Team, Oden still got a little tense after donning the red and black pinwheel for the first time.

Funny moment at the ESPY's; shaq went up to present an award and instantly just evil stares down Greg Oden in the crowd and says "Greg Oden i'll be seeing you real soon" Then lets out a laugh and presents the award.

Jimmy Kimmel also asked him about his age saying he can't be only 19 because he looks like Grady from Sanford and Son.
