Men's Basketball: Lauderdale Featured in Minnesota Game Program

BIG GUY, BIG PERSONALITY
Ohio State freshman Dallas Lauderdale?s infectious attitude serves as an important role on the team
By Kendra Lee, Ohio State Athletics Communications
With the Big Ten basketball season in full swing, focus and determination are essential in being successful. For Ohio State, another key ingredient to the team?s success is having a little fun and that is exactly freshman Dallas Lauderdale?s cup of tea.
In order to bring smiles to his teammates? faces, there are other ways, besides playing jokes, that Lauderdale accomplishes those feats. He just has to sing.
?I sing all the time,? Lauderdale boasted. ?I sing whatever and whenever, especially in the locker room. It is a lot of R&B music and I?m really smooth with it. Sometimes Evan (Turner) will join in but he can?t sing. I can.?

He made the most of the time he got on the floor here in the NIT. Against UMass, he had 5 rebounds, 2 points, a block (should've had 2), and a foul in 9 minutes of action. I wish he would have gotten more time during the year, but he's setting himself up really well for next year. He's going to be the key sub for us next year relieving either Mullens or Koufos (if he stays).

He's gonna be a good one. Reminds me of a smaller version of Ken Johnson, except he's further ahead than Ken at this point (not sure whose ceiling is higher at this point, though).

He has exceeded my expectations over the last couple weeks of the season with his defense and rebounding. All he needs to do is work on his free-throw shooting and his footwork around the basket and he will be a great help next season.

Dallas really needs to work most on his stone hands...He needs to learn to catch the ball and grab the ball better...He loses rebounds that he should get or has to tip a couple times instead of just being able to grap it...

But Dallas will be a force for us next year and would love to see him get a little more offensive skill to go along with his defense...Could be a Joey Dorsey type player by his senior year...He has more length than Dorsey tho, so his ability to grab balls out of his area and bother more shots could be better than Dorsey...

I agree completely with the Dorsey comparison. And if we can get 3 years of Joey Dorsey-type production from Dallas, it is going to be a very good 3 years.

My biggest hope for Dallas is that the staff improves his shooting form this summer. His form has been awful all season, he shoots the ball coming down from his jumpers and his free throws are ugly. If he can get a full summer shooting with decent form and work on his post moves, he could be a very good player for us next season.

I was very encouraged with how Dallas played ending the year. He is strong as an ox and seems to relish throwing his weight around. Against UMass it looked at times as if he took it personal when the Minutemen came into the lane (a good attitude for a big man)

It is said that a college players biggest improvement comes between his frosh and soph campaigns, so I look for more good things from Dallas next year.

I agree though with his shooting and with the Dorsey comparisons, on a side note, Joey Dorsey has impressed me with his work ethic and leadership this year after putting his foot in his mouth last year.

OSU men's basketball: Lauderdale is making a push to start inside
Matta also might put two big men in the lineup

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CHRIS RUSSELL | DISPATCH
Freshman B.J. Mullens, front, has 4 inches and 20 pounds on Dallas Lauderdale, back, but the sophomore has more experience and a 7-foot-4 wingspan.

Dallas Lauderdale remembers the moment coach Thad Matta hugged him after the Ohio State men's basketball team won the National Invitation Tournament in New York. "He said, 'This is just the beginning,' " Lauderdale said. "I'll never forget that because the end of my freshman year was really the beginning of my college career. My confidence meter is on full now because of that."
It took Lauderdale nearly all of a 37-game season to figure out how to be an asset and not a liability at the Division I level. The question of how long it takes the Buckeyes' next big thing, 7-foot B.J. Mullens, to learn the same is creating an intriguing situation as preseason practice continues.
If Matta decides to start only one big man instead of both when the season begins in a few weeks, will it necessarily be Mullens, who is touted as a top-five NBA draft pick next year?
Considering what fans saw from Lauderdale and Mullens going head to head in two public scrimmages last week, it is anything but a foregone conclusion. Lauderdale, who has shed 13 pounds and 11 points off his body-fat percentage in the past year, is 4 inches shorter and 20 pounds lighter than Mullens. But with the help of his 7-4 wingspan, he held the upper hand in both matchups.
"B.J. is capable of being a starter and contributing," sophomore Evan Turner said Sunday during Big Ten media day in Chicago. "But he's a freshman and he's having his rocky days while he's trying to get acclimated. He's going to have to pay his dues before he really blows up."

Lauderdale has ?minor? injury

I confirmed a short while ago that sophomore Dallas Lauderdale suffered a left shoulder injury during the scrimmage Sunday at Miami University.
Fortunately for the Buckeyes, it?s not as serious as the one on the women?s team, which lost freshman guard Amber Stokes for 10-12 weeks because of a dislocated shoulder. Stokes, from Gahanna, is the daughter of former OSU guard and current radio analyst Ron Stokes. She also was hurt Sunday in a scrimmage against the Miami women?s team in the Schottenstein Center.
Lauderdale had tests Monday that showed a ?minor sprain,? team spokesman Dan Wallenberg said. He said Lauderdale may be held out of the Nov.13 exhibition game against Walsh ?as a precaution, but he should be ready to go? for the regular-season opener against Delaware State on Nov.20 in St. John Arena.
Reports from Miami had Lauderdale, again, as one of Buckeyes? best players on the floor. An observer described him as ?powerful, moved around well, was active and disruptive.?
