Game Thread Buffalo Bulls at tOSU, Aug 31, 12 ET, ESPN2

Decker got schooled today by an All American. And even Mewhort struggled against him.
C. Grant had a decent game as far as early returns look.
Reeves over-all didn't do too bad for a first start and no experience. One TD and they were picking on him all day.
D. Grant was solid.
Shazier missing so much of the game hurt the defense.
Brax looked sharp with ball placement. He was a warrior when it was needed. :urban2:

If there is an 85% chance to win in each game, the most likely outcome for the season is 12-2 or thereabouts.
So, you can't pick two games on the schedule you think we will lose? What was the % to win in each game last year?

Whats the % on a catalyst making this a "team" ala MSU game last year?

I hear what you & NF are saying.. let's enjoy the ride. Who knows what leaders will emerge and what will take place this season.. I find it telling that the guys who are saying we will lose two games can't find two teams to beat us on the schedule. If we are better than everyone talent wise, and coached better, we ought fair pretty well this season.

My observations.

Braxton - He had two great throws in the first quarter to fields and smith. Other than that he reverted back to last year after the hot start. He sailed the pass on the corner route, didn't have a good feel in the pocket and take off when he should have. It is game 1 and it is much better than where he was this time last year. He is only going to get better.

RB - First of all where was Dunn? I didn't see him get passed on the depth chart. Weird. Jordan Hall did great taking advantage of the huge holes on the OL. IMO any of the backs would have housed those two runs, but kudos to Hall on the comeback. I think we missed the physicality of Hyde and Smith on a few runs.

Wilson - This guy get's his own comment. He is so great at maintaining his speed while cutting and making people miss. Future star that had freshman moments. He needs to be on the field at WR just as much as RB.

OL - Good job opening huge holes on the TD run. Jacoby Boren stepped up big when he filled in. Decker has work to but Mack is the real deal.

DL - I was disappointed by lack of pressure, I thought their spacing was really wide. Buffalo did a good job making quick throws to take them out of the pass rush game. Bosa looked promising

LB - Grant did ok but he didnt stand out, he also lost his assignment on the TD. The rest of the LBs played as expected.

CB - Grant did a great job today and Armani got picked on. I am thankful we have Roby coming back. Armani just needs more time.

S -C Brown, Tanner and Bryant did very well.

I thought the D played very well given the circumstances with depth and field position. I wish we got more penetration with the Dline and got more TFL on running plays. I don't think we know how good these guys are until next week or until we play Cal.

The offense is ready to explode it's 100 percent dependent on Braxton.

Oh yeah, Kenny G. Can't say enough about this kid. Becoming one of my all time favorite buckeyes.

Let's simplify this.

If you roll a pair of dice and decide that you "win" if you roll > 4, you have a great chance of winning, but if you roll 12 times, you're likely to lose twice.

Football is different in that the chance associated with each event is different, but outcomes are far from deterministic. Given this, stochastic methods still give the best rational expectation for season outcomes.

This means that, even though the chance of victory is greater than 50% for each game, the chance of winning all of them is MUCH less than 50%.

Since my only assertion is that OSU has a better than 50% chance of winning any given game this season, but that they are very unlikely to win them all, you're argument is not with me; it is with the stochastic methods that I learned at The Ohio State University.

How dare you bring math/stats into an emotional argument 8D

Focusing on the negatives.

  • It wasn't that hot and humid: TV said high 80s temp and low 90s heat index. That does have an effect but we weren't in the danger zone of 95/105. The team just showed a surprising lack of conditioning.

  • Lack of focus: Anyone who didn't see the literal taking the foot off the gas after the initial plunger insertion was not paying attention.

  • Cheap mistakes: The first 14 points were clearly the result of mental mistakes (see: focus, lack thereof)

Yep, I believe they said it was around 95 at the booth level, so probably very close to 100+ at field level. Still, we obviously didn't hydrate properly/have the best conditioning, and that doesn't reflect well on the coaches.

Perhaps, but I didn't see many buffalo players cramping up and leaving the game. I've seen worse weather at an opener with far, far less effects on the team.

Granted - however in talking with my brother after the game as he was both on field level and up in the upper deck, he said the difference was very noticeable even within the stadium. Add in being amped up to play and going at game speed, the younger guys especially were having issues. Brax and Shazier will be fine going forward I think.
