Fantasy BuckeyePlanet Fantasy Football - Keeper League (R.I.P.)

I made the comment in the draft chat that my team from last year was re-assembling itself like T-2000. For the first half of this draft that was definitely true.

  • I had my two keepers, A. Rodgers (3) & L. McCoy (10)
  • I drafted R. Moss in the 1st. I have drafted him in the first round every year so far, and have never "kept" him. Last year that was intentional - I knew I could put him back in the pool, keep another guy over him and still be able to draft him when my high first rounder came around. Essentially, he was a third keeper last year. I didn't expect to get him back this year, but couldn't pass him up when he was there. I paused to consider R. Wayne, but I think Moss is going to be huge in his contract year.
  • I had R. Grant last year, and spent my first pick in the second round on him. That's what it would've cost me to keep him anyway (just like Moss). I've been looking at the top of the draft since everybody declared their keepers, and I had him targeted and planned on getting him back. He was the one feature back who I felt like I could count on, and count on to be available.
  • A. Gates was the first player I picked that wasn't on my team last year, in the fourth round. I had targeted a TE in that spot since it looked like my pick would fall around his and D. Clark's ranking. Honestly I preferred Clark, but I'm happy with Gates. With V. Jackson no longer a factor for the Chargers, he might end up being the better choice anyway - who knows. I feel like TE was a deep position in this draft, but there was a clear top 2-3 players. If I struck out there, I probably would have waited until the double digit rounds to pick a guy. There were guys I liked coming off injury going in the late rounds. (C. Cooley, O. Daniels)
  • I then went back-to-back with two more players that were on my team last year. Originally, I had targeted CJ Spiller with my 5th/6th rounders, but he came off the board a few picks before my turn came up. Once again, I hadn't planned on him being there but I needed another starting WR and M. Sims-Walker was the best one available at that point in my view. I followed that up with Matt Forte, who didn't put up good enough stats for me to designate him as a keeper, but is still young, was moderately productive and has some potential. Furthermore, I drafted him in the same round I would've had to spend to keep him (kinda like Moss & Grant). If Forte happens to take the next step this year, I'll have a good value and his keeper clock would be starting over for me. Even if he just duplicates last year I think he's a decent flex guy.
There are few nice things about picking at the back of the draft in this format. One thing I did find to be an advantage though - you can (in a sense) deflate the keeper value of players you think might be valuable down the road by picking them second in the pair. I did this with all of the RBs I drafted.

My Team - SuperFanChachi

I didn't prepare nearly as much for this draft as I did my "home league", but I think I like my team well enough.

RB
My RBs are my strength.
(MJD, Ray Rice, Felix Jones, Brandon Jacobs, Willis McGahee)

QB
I didn't plan on taking a QB as early as I did, but I couldn't pass up Brady at that point in the draft. I think he has a huge year for the Pats. I think Stafford is more than servicable as a backup.
(Tom Brady, Matthew Stafford)

TE
I love my TE! I believe he blows up for the Packers this year.....yes, I've been drinking the kool-aid.
(Jermichael Finely)

WR
My WRs are the question mark of this team, but I really think they'll pan out. Roddy White should be Mr. Consistent. Then I think T.O. will give the Bengals his one last good fantasy year. And among my 3 youngsters I figure one (maybe even two) could step up to have a break-out season. In fact, I think in the Houston offense Jacoby Jones could be huge for me this year, and a potential brilliant second-to-last pick of the entire draft. :sneaky:
(Roddy White, Terrell Owens, Percy Harvin, Kenny Britt, Jacoby Jones)

K
Dome kicker...very good offense (but not great without their best WR & 3rd down RB of last year). He should have plenty of opportunities.
(Ryan Longwell)

DEF
I doubt they can cause as many turn-overs and repeat the defensive TDs they had last year, but it's an opportunistic D, so I'll role with them and see what they can do for me.
(New Orleans)

Good Luck All.

:highfive:

QB

Favre - high risk, high reward pickup. Should put up big numbers if he can stay healthy.
Flacco - Insurance for Favre, should be a steady if not a breakout player. Could be a good keeper value at 5.

RB

Gore - top-5 RB has treated me well. Thought about Johnson but couldn't afford to wait 17 picks for a RB.
DeAngelo - top-10 RB has been my workhorse. Was a true RB1 last year before injury despite Stewart.
Charles - good RB3 value in the 7th (keeper), if Jones is as expendable as NY thought, Jamaal should build on his strong close to 09.
Brown - Addai is on his way out next year and just suffered a concussion. In the 11th, I either snagged a starter for '10 or keeper for '11.

WR - very good unit, may just forfeit week 10 w/ so many byes

Jennings - Good not great WR1, should have a big year in Green Bay's explosive passing attack.
Colston - Very solid WR2, will make it easy to know which 2 to start each week
Meachem - Came on strong last year, provides a handcuff for Colston and a flex starter in sparse weeks
Floyd - Sleeper pickup, could put up big numbers with Jackson's fall from grace
Williams - Tampa Bay's #1 WR, produced well in preseason with all QBs. Great upside as a keeper, much better than the junk veterans at this spot.
McCluster - KC's Percy Harvin, will get plenty of touches but on a bad team. After what he did for my college squad, I had to draft him again.

TE

Jason Witten - Should be a steady producer. Boll Weevil took Vernon Davis right before my pick, so I took a hit here. Looking back, it might have been better to go with Sims-Walker and draft a late TE like Daniels. I may have panicked a bit with the run on TEs.

D/K

Baltimore - ranked between #2 & #6. Not bad for a late pickup.

Akers - see above description

My team will probably suck ass again this year, but here is an analysis:

QB- Kolb, McNabb
Sort of a semi-matchup situation here with Phily QBs past and present. I waited to get my QB until the later rounds and just missed out on Cutler, but I think Kolb will have his share of good games. Hard to say what McNabb will do when he has much less to work with this year, but he still has some left in the tank and feels he has something to prove. I think he'll probably have 5-7 good matchups this season, which is probably all I will need him for. Decent backup.

Grade: B-

RB- Best, Addai, Barber, Forsett, Portis
The way the draft was set up and the guys that were kept, I was not in a position to get an "elite" back, even with the 3rd pick, and I had other guys I felt I needed to pick at the WR and TE positions to get elite players at those spots as well. That left me with this mish-mash that is OK for matchups with 5 guys but this group sucks armadillo nipple on paper. Best could be a good pick for me in the mid-rounds if he pans out, or he could be Kevin Smith V2.0. Addai doesn't have much left but plays on a really good team and will get some favorable matchups on carpet late in the year. I think Barber is underrated (along with ABradshaw, who I also almost picked at his spot) because I think Dallas will run more than people think and he'll get the power red zone carries. Hard to know what to make of Forsett, but he's the best back they have on a team that sucks buttcheeks, so he could give me 3-4 good weeks and could be a keeper if he is a feature back next year. Portis is waaaay on the downside, but still starts in Washington and still seems to have 3-5 really good games a season. Because I won't need a RB at the flex spot many weeks (see WR below) I only need 2 guys most weeks, and I think I can find 2 serviceable options. RB was never going to be my strength, so I rolled the dice with this league like I did the one I drafted 12/12 last year and won by going with WR, TE, and D.

Grade: F+

WR- Andre Johnson, Fitzgerald, DeSean Jackson
I went elite on the wideouts, taking Andre Johnson first and grabbing Fitz instead of a tier 2 or tier 3 back at the end of round 2 (DJ was a keeper, 6th round). It worked well, because the back I would have taken was Best, and he was still on the board early in round 3 for me. These guys will all 3 play together most weeks with DJ at the flex. As long as none get hurt for a significant amount of time, I should be fine here at just 3-deep. RBs will fill in the flex when WRs have to sit.

Grade: A

TE- Vernon Davis, Owen Daniels
Had to take Davis early when Gates and Clark went off the board...he was the last elite TE left and I was lucky to grab him when I did. If he approaches the 900 yards and 8 TDs he had last year, I'm good to go here. OD was a 14th rounder that I was surprised was still on the board. He is a good one-week fill-in and some security if Davis sprains a knee or punches a kitten and misses a week or two.

Grade: A

DEF- Phily, NY Jets
I was pretty happy with these picks. The Jets I kept at 12, and despite Ds going as early as round 8, Phily was still there very late for me to grab for matchup potential. This gives me 2 of what I consider the top 5 fantasy defenses, and if DJ runs back some kicks, it will be a bonus. I don't like week 1, but I like the rest with both.

Grade: A

Kicker: Gould
No one gives a fiddler's shitlog about kickers, if Gould blows goats I'll just cut him and pick up another one.

Grade: Who cares

All in all, I think I will be able to match last season's win total (I think it was 4 or 5) and maybe give a few of the better teams a run for their money if I have a back or two (like Best) step up.

I am pretty happy with my team even after I effed up on the draft time and came in at the end of the 4th round. With this leagues set up, I will always target rb's over wr's because of the differential in points per yards gained between them.

QBs
Philip Rivers
Ben Roethlisberger
Thankfully yahoo auto selected on of the big 7 qbs in Rivers, I think there is a drop off of production after him so I was glad to get him in the 4th. With Rivers in the fold, I felt I could gamble a 9th rounder on Roethlisberger, and if he comes back strong, might be an attractive keeper pick.

RBs
Chris Johnson
Rashard Mendenhall
Shonn Greene
CJ Spiller
Darren McFadden
I think I have great rbs and will play 3 of them every week. All of them are young and have plenty of upside. Unfortunately, this will be the last year I can keep Johnson, but Mendenhall (7), Spiller (5), and McFadden (11) are all attractive keepers, especially McFadden if he can take advantage of his early playing time and roll to a good year.

WRs
Reggie Wayne
Steve Smith (Car)
Jeremy Maclin
Jabar Gaffney
I am glad to get Reggie Wayne, but am not that big a fan of Smith, especially in the 3rd round (open to trade if anyone wants him!). I think Maclin has some good upside if Kolb develops this year. Gaffney is insurance if the top WRs are on bye. I don't necessarily punt on wrs in this league, but will always only play two, so I thought I could get by with just four.

TEs
Chris Cooley
Zach Miller
The worst part of coming to this draft late was that the run on TEs had come and gone by the 5th round so I decided to take a couple late with the hopes that one of them turns into a decent play each week based on matchups.

Defense
Dallas
I never care about a defense, I don't really feel there are elite defenses anymore that are worth taking very early, so I usually take best available the next to last round.

Kicker
Dan Carpenter
I do punt on kickers, they are dime a dozen. If Carpenter doesn't work, I will just pick up best available from the wire.

Hoping the Dick Rods can finish higher than 6th this year (my best finish over the last couple of years) *crosses fingers*. I love taking RBs and this year was no different.

QB
Drew Brees (2nd year keeper) - Was pretty much my entire team the last 2 years because I've never had any elite caliber RBs. Have won a lot of games in large part because of Brees and couldn't put him down. Not planning on him being kept after this year, but I'll play that by ear next year. He'd have to be worth that 1st round pick for sure.
Jay Cutler - Was hoping he'd be available pre-draft as a GREAT back-up/part-time starter for bad match-ups and was thrilled to get him, especially as late as I did. Potential keeper (8th).

RB
Steven Jackson - Would have been my pick if I had the #1 overall pick in this years draft and was OVERJOYED he fell to me with the #4 pick. Didn't keep Andre Johnson as a keeper just to see what would transpire and would have loved to have Andre back again, but thrilled to finally get an elite level back in this league.
Arian Foster - One of the guys I was targeting pre-draft because I think he's gonna blow up this year, but may have picked him too soon (3rd) because he may have been available in the 4th. Potential keeper.
Ronnie Brown - Love him as a RB3 as opposed to a RB1 or RB2, especially considering his amazing ability to get hurt mid-season and be done for the rest of the year. Has proven big time rewards the last couple of years up until he gets hurt, though.
Ahmad Bradshaw - Not starting for the Giants, but I think he's the better of their two backs and I think he's gonna get the better numbers as the season progresses.
Fred Jackson - Another guy not starting, but the rookies wear down by midseason and Fred could prove big. Also thinking he could have the better numbers between him and Spiller by the end of the year and could be a steal in the 11th.
Darren Sproles - A proven guy that was worth taking a shot with in the later rounds (12th), especially with a rookie in front of him (see Fred Jackson). If he changes ball clubs, could potentially be a keeper in a new scenario with a new team.

WR
Wes Welker - One of the guys I really targeted pre-draft and fell to me in the 5th. I think he's gonna be a stud this year with a contract on the line and he catches a LOT of balls.
Chad Ochocinco (keeper) - Probably messed up keeping him over Knowshon Moreno, but Moreno was hurt at the time of the intial keepers being announced and I'd have had to give up a 5th instead of a 6th to keep Moreno. Ocho was a consistent dude for me, as Brees and my WRs kept me in games. At 6th, I felt he was good value.
Braylon Edwards - A good solid WR3 for me who is the #1 target for a team on the rise and was available late (10th).
Mike Williams (seattle)- My sleeper pick (13th). Needed one more WR, and with Hoosh moving to Baltimore, he became the #1 target for Seattle. Felt he could be the best risk/reward of a few WRs I was considering at the time of the pick. We'll see how he pans out.

TE
Kellen Winslow - Wanted to take a TE really late because there are so many good ones this year and should have waited until the 11th-13th to pick one up, but panic picked in the 9th and he was the best available TE at the time. Had him last year and he disappointed. Hoping the change of scenery (Tampa) helps his production. Should have targeted another RB with this pick and waited on the TE, but what can you do? He's a souljah, afterall.

DEF
New York Giants - Felt they were the best available and solid up front. Have gotten lucky in the past (GB 2 years ago, PIT last year), so we'll see how this goes.

K
Matt Prater - Had a couple other kickers rated higher, but their bye weeks would have come at sucky times. Prater was the best available on my list with a bye week that came at a good time. Kickers are pretty much even across the board production-wise, so it doesn't matter much in the end and they'll be plenty to choose from if Prater doesn't work out.

--------------
By the way, I'm really open to any potential trades. If you've got a proposal, throw it my way.

WOW. Was thinking this was possible mid/late season (ala Johnathan Stewart or DeAgelo Williams in year's past). Certainly wasn't expecting 231 yds rushing and 3 TDs on opening day. Arian was WELL worth the 3rd round pick

Picked up Brandon Jackson in all of my leagues Sunday afternoon. At that time the reports were saying it was minor and Grant would be back - that Jackson would be useful for Week 2 at most. I saw the injury live though, and I'm glad I trusted my gut on this on.
