His MSU catch went for 11 entire yards! And his Purdue catch gained him 3 fewer yards than Hall's. Granted, it was 38 yards, but he didn't get into the endzone. I can't remember the play, but I'm positive he wasn't caught from behind. :wink2:

See, now somehow, I've gotten myself into arguing against Gonzo, which was far from my intentions. My entire point was to say that my opinion is Hall still has a shot. I apologize for not sharing your opinion, JW and Mililani. Maybe if I wasn't sleeping for the second half of the season, I would write him off like you two obviously have.

I'm trying to remember whether he brought in that bomb against MSU... I guess it was a drop.

I just meant it was pretty clear that Gonzo solidified his position... he caught a big catch against purdue... made a great 80 yd strike early on... then caught a tough fingertip grab later in that game... then had his great hands on a poor throw by zwick in the AB.

I get what your saying Yertle. I hope he exceeds Holmes this year. I doubt he will though.

Just watched the play Milli posted. I garauntee Gonzo gets away from the corner covering Hall, NOT the linebacker in the picture!! The corner covering Hall fell down and was running/stumbling forward when Hall caught it!! Hall had a chance to take the ball up the sideline after he caught it but his momentum was carrying him toward the middle of the field. He was lucky to get past #7.

That was still a great play!! Great call!! If you had a more agile guy out there it is tied 17-17.

As a recap, Smith goes on to throw a bad pick three plays later to start the fourth quarter.

I think I have a clip of the play, and Gonzo actually did kind of whiff on the block...however, it should have been moot as Hall had a jump on everyone and should've scored. Hey, I found the clip of the play (right-click and save).

I think Gonzo's got the third spot solidified and im in favor of keeping the defenses on their feet using hall as a te or in the backfield....wow very explosive offense and lets not forget about Devon Lyons....I gota friend in Pitt who says he was a beast in hs and im lookin for him to do it here, this guy is fast and can be used to our adv....but i do think he'l be up to his fullest potential when maybe Santonio is a pro.....which receiver do you guys think will get the most yards/td's....my answer is Ginn although defenses may double him and that could be great for Holmes

my vote for most yrds + td's as a wr would be holmes. all around ginn will likely beat him in both. but as a wr, id put money on holmes.

yertle, im not anti hall. but he was the #3 guy last year and lost it to ginn. then he lost it to gonzo. by the end of the year people began consctructing statues of ginn and gonzo really impressed. he did everything you could ever ask of a #3 wr and more. so imo hall would have to have one heck of spring and early season and gonzo would really have to suck it up for hall to overtake him. the fact that the coaches have considered him at other positions really reinforce that theory. hall has good hands and seems very talented. but he's very slow comparitively. while he does look like david boston, he isn't. i think he might be a better fit as an athletic te.

id rather gonzo whiff a block than take a chance at a clip. you gotta expect your wr to outrun a lb when he has a 5 yrd headstart. if you look closer you will see that in the first clip the lb is not at a sprint and gonzo has perfect position to cut him off for the sideline. hall decides to take it straight up the middle and outrun the lb as both are standing flat footed putting gonzo well out of position. the lb just flat out outruns him from behind. i seriously doubt gonzo gets caught from behind on that play.

Players to watch in the passing game ,this year!

I'm really looking for the further growth of the passing game this year! Guys like Gonzo and Lyons were just starting to put it all together at the end last year! Any comments on your players to watch this year?

I don't know about this. Am I the only one remembers how Tressel prefers to run the offense. I think Tressel will start conservativley and gradually open up the offense as the season progresses. You will see more of the passing game in the latter half of the season, while the first half of the season will be grind them out type of games. Look at many of the pre Big Ten games we've played since Tressel has been here. How many have been nail biters? JMHO.

We haven't had the personnel to run a lethal passing attack before tho, and in 2002 & 03 Ross had not bulked up too much and was still somewhat effective (plus there was some MoC guy in 02). Krenzel wasn't a great passer, Holmes was still maturing in 03, and Gamble would be #3 or#4 on our current depth chart at WR IMO.

Not sure why we're gonna have to wait until next year for Dukes, I doubt he'll be a force early on, but by midseason I see him making some plays (especially considering the opposition will be much easier during that part of the schedule).

I don't expect us to turn into USC, but I think we will see a passing game emerge. We are going to struggle to run the ball against Texas no matter who our RB is, and with how they struggled in the Rose Bowl it seems clear we should try and beat them through the air.
