Buckeye Nemesis/Archenemies

I just don't understand those who have Michigan as our nemesis instead of our archenemy. I also have several good friends who are Michigan alum, and I respect the hell out of them. But, I hate the fuck out of Michigan athletics with every fiber of my being. I paid my respects when Bo passed, but I'll dance a fucking jig when Jim "Schadenfreude" Mandich dies. Fuck Michigan.

"You kind of like your nemesis, despite the fact that you despise him."

I despise Michigan, but I respect them. Can't say the same for Penn State.

"We measure ourselves against our nemeses"

I think most Buckeye fans would agree that any season with a win against Michigan is a successful one, at least in some regard. I don't know who else I'd say that about.

Our archenemies (at least for me) are: ND, The SEC minus Vandy, Miami, FSU, and USC.

Don't you have to play someone for them to be your archenemesis? OSU plays each of these people once in a dog's age, if not longer, they're more like an aquaintance you detest :wink2:

For archenemy it's gotta be scUM. Nemesis I would say PSU or Wisconsin

Giving the author his due for the moment, let's break this down into a more appropriate dichotomy.

- If the Big Ten were to announce that a school was being kicked out of the conference and sent to the MAC to wallow in mediocrity forever, the school you'd pick would be his idea of archenemy.

- If you could pick a school to beat every year by four touchdowns when they come into the game undefeated and ranked in the top two, that would be an his concept of archnemesis.

When it comes to scUM, PSU, and Wisconsin, people on this site have expressed both views, so either is legitimate.

My view is that I've always been able to have a reasonable conversation with most Michigan fans who are actually from the state. Ohio born Michigan fans are simply a loathsome breed of subhumans undeserving of a Sam's Club Card. Jersey Shore wannabe State Penners and battery chucking cheeseheads can all DIAF. I was thrilled to see Wisconsin and Bulemia choke away the Rose Bowl to Sisters of The Poor U., Dallas Branch Campus and died a little inside just seeing their worthless program representing the Big Ten.

Michigan is a nemesis, because I am in the camp that wants to see them man up and play some damned football. Wisconsin is an enemy, because I'd be perfectly satisfied if they became a hockey and lacrosse school and burned Camp Randall to the ground. I'd want a jar of ashes on my desk. Same goes for Beaver Stadium.

Nemisis: scUM. Lets be honest here, we all took a moment when Bo passed before "The Game". We complain that they are dragging down the rivalry, wanting them to get better. We voice our concerns over their players and rejoice when they are finally worth a damn going into the annual showdown with the Bucks. Its a classic battle. Its Blue vs Red, North vs South, Nike vs. Adidas, Woody vs. Bo. We base our coaches off of our games with them. We are concerned with them in every public manner possible - ask John Cooper.

Arch Enemy: Penn State. Since their arrival to the Big Ten in the mid 90s they have given us fits and ruined great season starts - remember Troy Smith's sack on a comeback drive? They claim to be Linebacker U. yet so do we. They have a stadium that is top 5 largest in the country, just like ours. We poke fun at Joe Pa but secretly want him to retire so we can watch their program spin into a spiral that would take years to get straightened out. This Arch Enemy is known since high school and the annual Big 33 game. That game puts out not only college great, but also Super Bowl players. We don't let it known often, but we can not stand them nor their wins.

That didn't ruin the start of the season. Texas already did that. In fact, Ped State has only been Ohio State's first loss of the season one time since they joined the B1G. 1997 - and they were ranked #2 at the time, and it was kind of a rebuilding year for us. They are more like a pimple on the butt than a nemesis or archenemy in my opinion.

Which is the only painful loss, and still not that bad of one. They aren't anywhere close to Wisconsin for #2 on the nemesis list. Purdue has been arguably as big of a pain as PSU.

PSU "should" have been OSU's other rival and a major roadblock in recruiting and conference play. Instead they held onto a relic who drove them into devastating mediocrity long before any sanctions were on the radar.

That would narrow my choices down to Northwestern and Indiana - because both wallow in mediocrity about as good as any two college programs can and would be an interesting fit in the MAC. But I'd keep Northwestern because the Conference and Ohio State needs Chicago and without Northwestern the Chicago media would go back to sucking Notre Dame dry. On the other hand, it's nice to go to Bloomington and have your pick of seats in the stadium. Hmmmmmmm.

Are you factoring basketball into your analysis? Since Ped State joined the Big 10 Ohio State is 14-7 against them and 11-5-1 against Wisconsin. To me that is pretty close to being even especially since Ohio State has an all-time wininng percentage against Wisconsin of like .738. I think both are bigger games (than say Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, etc...) on the schedule in their own right and for different reasons. I just didn't get the anywhere close portion of the comment.

Sans this year, yeah they have. How they have been is hard to explain.

Yep, although the right coach could turn that program around. The same can not be said for their fan base however.

No. Basketball eliminates any sliver of a discussion.

Wisconsin dethroned the defending champions in 03.
Wisconsin ruined the title chase of the best team in america in 10.

Penn State's most devastating victory? Beating OSU in 05 to tie as league champs instead of having OSU win it outright.
