Buckeye memories when we were kids

I remember watching games on TV with my dad. During the WWH days my dad always had great things to say about the coach... and how he coached those kids. I learned sportsmanship, and how to win and lose with grace. I also remember watching the Earl Bruce Show on Sunday AMs on Toledo tv. It was almost as much fun as watching the game. I just loved that time.

Great memories growing up.

Living in Chicago, I'm raising my boys as displaced Ohioans. Sick, I know... but they need to understand their roots are in Ohio. This year we started a tradition of getting my boys, my dad and myself to a game at the Shoe each year. My youngest, at age four, is just getting to the point that he'll remember these games for the rest of his life. My oldest already has a few games under his belt that he remembers. I'm looking forward to having a long list of memories with all of us in the Shoe for years to come.

Also, earlier this year my gma turned 100. My oldest son and I drove to Columbus for her party (the little one was sick). Along with my mom and dad, Nick and I went over to the WHAC. It was really cool to get some pictures taken with the trophys. Damn good memories.

I don't know about you BUCKYLE but I'm still pretty pissed off that my grandparents were forced to leave the game against NC State that day because of that little prick and his loud mouth. YOU should be just as pissed that it took your sister 3 months to get rid of the Mononucleosis that she caught from that horny-dicked little mo-fo!

Peace.

Unfortunately I started really following the bucks in the early/mid 90's when we couldn't beat Michigan for the life of us. So I remember every time we had to play the yellow/blue team (yes "those guys") I wanted us to beat them so bad. Other than that I remember my dad talking up Andy Katzenmoyer a whole lot and we watched him explode on Korby Jones. I also remember a lot of blow out wins in the 90's.

Well, in the day, I remember the neighborhood boys riding our bicycles down the Olentangy River path, and stopping into the OSU dairy for a nickel ice cream cup. From there, across Lane Avenue to the Stadium (or the Shoe). We'd take out bikes up the ramps on the open ends, and go down as fast as we could, coming out under the stadium. Once, we almost hit Woody, and he yelled for us to get out of there, and so we ske-daddled. Dad took me to the Shoe when I was little, and have been fortunate to see 6 Rose Bowls, and attendant Buckeye Bashes. Saw OJ in 68, Plunkett in 70, and saw Joe Germaine engineer one of the greatest two minute drills ever in 97. Today, my wife and daughter and I go back to C-bus to see family over Thanksgiving, and my brother and I take our kids over to the Shoe, and usually find a door or two open, so we can walk the field. It certainly seems small now, without the track around it, and 'tight'. But when one adds 105,000 folk in it, I'll bet it feels reeeeeal small to the opposing teams. Still not over the 1969 loss to Michigan, but the rest I can deal with. Good ol' 2-10-1 Coop, and all the people that have come up to me and told me they lost big bucks betting on my beloved Buckeyes.

Being a from Missouri my first memory was when OSU and MU played each other. I don't remember much about those games though, other than that Mizzou got their a$$ beat! Eddie George and Andy Katzenmoyer are probably the two main reasons why I love the Buckeyes today and always will!

'94 Michigan game at the shoe...was in the boy scouts and we ushered that game. Sat right next to the band in the closed end of the stadium, right in front of the ROTC students. I'll never forget that, especially seeing seeing the streaker wearing nothing but a black belt and my dad laughing at the kid for having a little weiner. Bucks win, and the entire bottom bowl rushes the field and the ROTC members "protect" us, filtering the crowd around us.

Was at the Notre Dame game the following year too with the boy scouts. Plain old awesomeness!

'02 Purdue, sitting in my dorm room by myself, throwing shit most of the game, getting pissed, on the edge of my seat on the 4th down play, watching in horror as Krenzel drops back to pass wondering why we didn't run for it, watching the ball float, gripping my futon, watching Jenkins hall in the pass, yelling "Yes" and the top of my lungs for 10 seconds, cranking the fight song, and running up and down the hall, hugging everybody else who was running up and down the hall, jumping up and down.

'02 Michigan game, at the Gate on top of the beer truck, seeing the flood of people on Lane, high as a kite on happiness and joy, Bucks win!!! Thought nothing could replace how excited I was until...

The NC game, at my house with 10 of my best friends...we were up late that night!

'05 Michigan game at the Out House, sitting in Michigan's student section with my friend and 3 other Buckeye fans. Gonzo makes the catch, Michigan fans are silent, the 5 of us are hugging, jumping up and down, screaming, Pittman mocks Michigan as he barrels into the endzone. Michigan fans buy me drinks at Al's in Ann Armpit all night.

Lots of others too, but those ones are the my favorites.

'94 Michigan game. I'm over at Spielman36's apartment. He is sick as a dog. I was 14, and he was 18. Our plan, for the whole week, was that if we pulled off the win, he was going to drive over to campus, and we were going to celebrate with 100,000 of our best friends. About halfway thru the fourth quarter...he's sneezing, coughing, hacking, eyes watering...he's just a total wreck. I'm like..."we're still going...RIGHT?"...he says "yeah, cough, cough, cough...yeah...I just need some medicine". So I'm paying attention to The Game, and I happen to glance over at him in the kitchen, as he pours and drinks a double shot of nyquil. :shake: Needless to say, clock hits 00:00, and he just falls the fuck out. Gone. Passed out. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK! He's laying on the couch, and I'm about twice his size, so I'm literally picking him up off the couch and shaking the fuck out of him. "WAKE UP MOTHERFUCKER!!"....nope. He's dead to the world. So I spend the rest of the night watching everything I can find on our win, while he's blacked out from nyquil.

I'll never forgive Nyquil for ruining a 14 year olds chance to party on campus after a monumental victory over those fucking bastards.

My favorite play from this game...the saftey in the North Endzone. Michigan safties for being stupid are funny. 2001 Michigan saftey was classic too. One year I hope to beat Michigan just by scoring on a series of safties and blocked punts returned for TDs. I love seeing a punter get lit up during a block...esepcially one wearing a maize and blue winged helmet.

If being a kid tought me anything, it was to hate Michigan. And that it's okay to cry about Ohio State football. And Andy Groom reminded me of that after the 2002 season. Got to love somebody who loves being a Buckeye as much as he did and still does.

So many, but just a few that stand out:

Early 70's, last game of the year. Shoe will be putting in artificial turf in the off season. My dad takes me down from the stands out on to the field. He pulls out a pocket knife and cuts out a big chunk of sod, carries it to the car (seems like 5 miles), takes it home and plants it in the backyard.

First year student living in the towers. Playing frisbee in the Shoe at midnight, fully lit and empty. The humility.

Vic and Mom's pizza, Lane and High.

:oh:

I'm only 17, so I don't have too many memories that REALLY stick out in my mind, but the 2003 NC for us was one big memory for me. At a sports bar with my mom and pops, talking shit back and forth with a bunch of Miami fans. McGahee's destroyed knee. MoC's strip. The flag. Cie Grant's near sack. The Best Damn Team in the Land. Ah what a night.

I was little during the 2002 year. =/

I remember when Miami got a pass completed and ran out of bounds and I was like "yesss" (I played soccer when I was little so I thought it was good if they got out of bounds) and my dad thought I was rooting for the wrong team.

I knew nothing about football then, I didn't even know that there were downs. I just knew that a touchdown was good, that was about it.

And now I actually play football and know almost everything there is to know about it. xD

Fun Fact: In the late 1800's field goals were 5 points, I think they were worth more than touchdowns. 0_o

My first, most prominent, Buckeye memory is one where my Dad and I went to the 'Shoe before it was renovated. We weaseled our way down to lower seats near the track. I clearly remember being in awe watching Eddie George carry, like 3 fuckers on his back about 10-15 yards. It was incredible.

And, of course the NC in 2003. I was living in Florida but was visiting in Ohio with my family for the holidays, just such a sick game. My cousin had a muzzleloader for his Civil War reenactments and he shot that shit off every time we scored, then we all went ape shit on the goal line stand. Such a roller coaster of a game. I'm so glad I was old enough to remember that, fucking awesome. Go Buckeyes.
