Buckeye memories when we were kids

My sister entered Ohio State in the fall of 1953. I was glad to get her ass out of the house. She was 8 years older than me and often played the role of Mom. I forgave her for all of that when she got tickets to my first Ohio State game. Homecoming, Northwestern, Hoppy scored three touchdowns; long twisting, tackle breaking, how- 's-he-going-to-escape-this-time runs. the band did Script Ohio, the victory bell could still be heard as Dad and I pulled up seats for a coke, burger and fries at the Student Union before heading back to Dayton.

The next year was even better with tickets to see Indiana and then the historic goal line stand that stopped Michigan one foot short of the South end zone. One play later Hoppy was off again and the Bucks were about to earn their first National Championship under Woody.

I was there, learned to sing "We don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan," at a time when 'damn' got you hard time in the principal's office. Something I would discover the next week at dear old Greenmont Elementary.

In 1982 I was 12 years old....

I had to have major abdominal surgery. This was all before the open end of the stadium was enclosed. I checked into the hospital on Friday Dec 19th. My surgery was scheduled for Monday the 22nd. THE GAME was that Saturday, my entire family watched the game from my room... we had a perfect view from south stands (my hospital room.) We won!!!

One of my favorite memories was sitting in the South Bleachers as a Freshman during the UNC game. Archie had entered the game and was just tearing it up. Unlike today no BP or Scout available, many had no clue who he was. Archie had dominated my HS team many times in football and wrestling so I was familar with him. Even I was suprised how well he played that day and for 4 years. Archie was a 6 to 10 yd machine. At the end of many games you were suprised at his final totals because he didn't have that 80 yd run. In many of the blowouts during his career and yes there were many the Big 10 sucked, he would only play one series in the 2nd half. I often wonder if he had a more "Hollywood" coach..how many yards he could have had. A lot of runners like him take over in the third and fourth Qtr. after the defense is wore down. I will give a nod to his OL they were outstanding..Beanie may have been illegal behind those lines.

I just remembered Holy Buckeye...

I was sitting at my kitchen counter and was nervous as hell, even more nervous at the fact that it was 4th down. I remember holding my breath as Krenzel lofted that pass in the air and going insane when Jenkins came down with it, running outside to my dad who was cutting the grass (He stopped watching the game early in the 4th - I believe his exact words were "Just like Michigan State in fuckin' 98") and shouting something along the lines of "its a miracle!"

I was a Senior at tOSU and my best friend and I rushed the field after the game....Funny story...he found himself with sitting on the goal post (after it was came down)....and he lost his shoe....then later, he is still on the goal post being carried around, he looked down and saw his shoe and picked it up! LOL

I too have many great memories.....although many positive, two that stick were the OU game when the kicker (Ewe von something ??) kicked the winnng field goal, and the other was when I was in the old south stands and John Elway threw the TD to beat us....

Of course, I was also there in C deck and watched Keith Byers run out of his shoe against the greatest comeback....

Lots of good memories, but one that really stands out:

In '75' I went with my oldest brother to a game. I can't even remeber who played. He was a freshman at tOSU and his roommate went home for the weekend instead of going to the game. We were sitting up in C Deck with all the students and it was just a big fricking party. They were passing girls up and down the seats when the Buckeyes would score. I remember thinking I want to go to school here......

KIDS!

I will never forget how beautiful the grass looked in Ohio Stadium when I got into the stadium for the first time.

In the 1968 championship year, I was 13 and did not really know much about Ohio State football. Basketball, heck yes. I hated Indiana, thought Fred Taylor was the greatest coach ever, watched the hoops games on TV with the sound turned down so we could listen to Martin Petry freak out on WMNI when Ed smith would get into the game....

But one cold day, my dad was listening to the football game, grabbed me and said, let's go down there, we're going to get into the game.

It was halftime of the Purdue game. They were ranked #1, had Leroy Keyes, Mike Phipps, etc. and we were beating them. We got to the stadium and a couple of female students came out and the ushers let us take their seats.

We could never afford anything so extravagant as Ohio State football tickets, and here we were. As I said, when we got up the steps and the field came into view, it was fxxxxxng gorgeous. Of course we won, and that was the first time in my life I'd ever seen anyone hold up one finger to mean "we're #1" and it started that day and didn't stop until we had beaten OJ Simpson in the Rose Bowl.

Second best time? Being in the bleachers and watching a punt come to Mike Sensibaugh. He took it and wove his way through the tacklers to take it back for a TD. And later in the game, he did it again. The high seats in the endzone were not prime seats, but they were great for watching him run those babies down the field.

Maurice Clarett stripping Sean Taylor or Antonio Pittman trucking Prescot Burgess (or Shawn Crable) either way, it was nasty, and we won. I'm still young (19) and those are the two memories that stick out to me the most.

My favorite memory is from my first ever game at the Shoe. I was born and raised a Buckeye (Grandmother, mom, aunt, uncle all alums) I grew up watching the games every weekend at my home but had never been to one. My first game I was 20 years old went to the 1995 Illinois game. My fondest memory is sitting there and just listening to the entire crowd chant "Eddie,Eddie,Eddie!!" 102k screaming his name. I was in Awe.

My next favorite memory was coming to the shoe for the OSU-TX game with my boss who was born in raised in Austin. We left on Thursday night from Savannah,GA with tickets in hand from one of our members at the club we worked for. We left at midnight on Thursday and drove all night to my hometown of Zanesville. Arrrived in Z-ville around 10 ish and cracked open a beer (we made it there time to celebrate!) We then proceeded to have lunch at BW3 (my boss's (MIKE)first time ever in one) had a few more beers and ate. We then proceeded to play golf at Eaglesticks and were paired with a few Longhorns (just my luck lol) Killed a few brews on course. We then went to Damons in Newark (also Mikes first timme in one LOL) and met my parents for dinner. Mike by this time is kinda buzzed. We are on the way to our hotel and he starts telling me how he desperatley needed a vacation and some time away from work. He and his wife had just had a little girl and this was his first time away from her since she was born. By the time we get to our hotel we've been up for over 24 hours and made one hell of a road trip. Mike is just telling me how happy he was and he didn't think the night could get any better. We pull into the hotel parking lot and he looks over and goes "whats the Golden Fox?" I told him a strip club and his response "just when I didn't think the night could get any better IT DID!!!!" The next day we awoke had a few brews to start the day and went to College Gameday. Mike was amazed at all the people and how crazy OSU fans are. I took him all over campus and we had such a great day. When we re walking into the Shoe he goes "this aint nothing fancy" about half way through the first quarter he just looked around and said "wow there's a lot of f'in people in here!!" Although we came out on the short end I wass proud of our Bucks and he was amazed by the fan support and the whole gameday experience. He said he finally realized why I was the way I was LOL.

And on a side note, I now live in Florida and he is still in GA and my girl and I are making the road trip up to Savannah to watch us beat that Texas ass!!!!

As a kid, two games in the 1968 were the best. My parents had season tickets and my Mom would let me go with my Dad one game per year. In 68 it was the Purdue game. As Upnorth said Purdue came into the game #1 and was a heavy favorite. The Bucks held Leroy Keyes, who many thought was the best college RB that year to under 50 yards and we won the game.

When Michigan came, I begged my mom for just one more game and she relented, God bless her soul. So the absolute best time was sitting in C deck at the closed end of the stadium with my Dad as the Buckeyes clinched the Big Ten and Rose Bowl and a chance to face USC for #1.

Mine too.

We moved away from Ohio when I was 10 to a snobby ass area in western NY where most people were PSU fans. Needless to say I didn't fit in well and long story short my Ohio heritage became my badge of honor. Looking back now it really gave me a sense of pride and self confidence when I needed it the most. The Buckeyes then became the living embodiment of that and from then on it was much more than just a game to me whenever they played.

That 1985 Iowa game was the single greatest moment of joy and hapiness from OSU football I had up until the Holy Buckeye.

I remember when the Buckeyes won the NC, I was watching the game at PromoWest and was completely tanked. When Cie Grant hit Dorsey, it was the biggest rush of euphoria I have ever felt in my life, I was running arounf screaming "we won!!' over and over, hugging and high fiving everyone in the place. This is really the only time I have ever ben that excited about a sporting event, it was a completely new experience.

Another story that is just funny is when the phone rang in my apartment in the Harrison House, and one of my roommates answered it, had a funny look on his face, and handed the phone to my other roommate. I asked my 1st roommate what was going on, and he said "There's a gigantic black dude on the other end of the phone." "How on earth can you tell that?", I asked, and he replied "You can just tell". Well, my other roomate hangs up the phone and says "Guess who that was?" "A huge black dude?" I replied, and he said "Yeah, you could say that, that was Orlando Pace!" As it turns out, my buddy had hooked up w/ the roommate of Orlando Pace's gf at a party, but wasn't particularly interested in her and didn't call her back. Well, the two girls convinced Orlando to call my buddy up and use his status to give the other girl a chance. My buddy said Orlando was like "Look, I don't care, my gf is making me do this!! Give so and so another chance!".
