Buckeye Defense - 2004 (official thread)

we may or may not switch to man defense for the rest of the year.

HOWEVER.....

there is no excuse for us not adjusting our defensive strategy in the 2nd half. None whatsoever. I refuse to believe that our DBs aren't talented enough to handle man-on-man against northwestern's WRs. all we needed to do was play aggressive man-to-man, with a LB as a QB spy. 4 men rush the QB, 5 men are responsible for aggressively covering the eligible receivers, 1 guy spies the QB, and 1 safety deep. How do you beat this defense? Unless you have very good WRs you are not beating this defense. We should have beaten Northwestern, but our horrible defensive scheme and inability to adjust it was the difference.

no pass rush + soft zone = CERTAIN DEATH.
playing man coverage with "inexperienced" CB's = you might give up a few big plays, but the opposing team's QB and WR's have to be very good, they have to be in sync, and the QB has to be a very accurate passer.

Ok I get your point with you saying we don't play man to man because we're too young. Since Tressel has been here he's had Dustin Fox, Gamble, Ej Underwood, Mike Doss, Donnie Nickey, and Will Allen and he STILL hasn't ran it in his 4 years as coach. This is not going to happen not because of the players talent but just the coaches preferance. Right now, both the corners we have are probably better than gamble and will be better than Fox so I have no doubt in my mind they can handle man to man coverage atleast 10-15 times a game. I'm not saying totally put them out there the whole game but to rather use it to switch it up and keep them guessing.

Another thing is that OSU won't change their defense trust me. Gosh how many times we sit here and say well we need to change this and that and do we ever get what we really want? One answer, No. I think they'll come out with the same stuff next week and refuse to change again but with this team not passing the ball well .I don't think they do what NW did to us. Also I think Snyder will not go anywhere near the press box even if he can't see whats go'n on. The coaches actually are kind of stubborn in a way. All coaches are actually. They have their styles and thats that.

OSU-13 , Wisconsin 10........

Is Fox going to be back next week? That could go a bit of a way to helping out some of our more prevalent D problems. He's great at making tackles, so let him have the open side of the field, and if they screen, he can likely get there. It wouldn't completely eliminate the threat of the screen pass, but I think we'd see it get shut down at least once more next time Fox plays (which would make it a pair of stops, yeesh).

We'll see what Coach Tressel and The D- coordinator will do but Tressels pattern will not allow for drastic changes. Yes he may do some zone blitzes and I for one would like to see the Defense change it up a bit. In that respect I am Agreeing with you. It just does not look like the D-coordinator or Coach Tressel has enough confidense to run man D, thus we have a soft Zone.
Do I like it .... NO !!! I am agreeing with you on that note. OSU's Defense needs to mature and needs to get to the more agressive Defense we all love and die by but , with all due respect, its not going to happen JUST YET ! Not until Coach Tressel feels they can be more aggressive and the DB's can run 1v1 against their apponents. To be Blunt , Ohio State has the very best athletes bar none in the country, but mentally they are not there YET!! It will come but not just yet ... Yes I want what you want but if you look at Coach Tressels playstyle then you'll see he does not revamp right in the middle of a season. Won't happen.
I also think its less of a Defensive problem for this OSU team as it is an Offensive problem for this team as a whole and it comes down to maturity- that takes time !!! Specifically at the QB spot. Not that the O-line and RB's don't need help too.

Quote "No pass rush + soft zone = certain death" I agree TOTALLY, Great Statement !!!

MililaniBuckeye,
Do you think Coach Tressel is going to make drastic changes in his offense and Defense ?? I'd love it if OSU could overhaul certain things but it just doesn't seem his style to do that, especially in the middle of a season. These are not my wishes but an observation of Coach Tressel and his style of play and how he does things.

I'd love to at least see a more agressive Defense and some zone blitzes and definitely more pressure on the opposing QB's. That Would definetely fall into Coach Tressels plan but to change up to man coverage .... not yet. Maybe along the way but not yet. At least not until his Db's have more experience. If I am wrong please explain because I'd love nothing more than to see this offense make a flip flop and do AMAZING all around and the Defense to do the same. I just think Coach Tressel is going to stick with his plan and work on the conservative plays he has and build on that and reduce those errors.

everybody wants to go man to man but remember this, we couldn't stop the run so with teams spreading us out 2 and 4 wides. Our dbs are running with their backs to plays. Iam not saying don't use it but our most expierenced db ej underwood got turned alot in zone and was giving an ungodly cushin to who ever was split his way. Oh by the way frazier was chasing the qb when he rolled out, in nw 3 and 5 step drops he was useless, did anyone see kudla make any plays what so every, I didn't but maybe someone else did.

You are right about that. hehe I wouldn't go so far as saying anyone is useless but the D-line and Lb's as a whole needs to step it up a notch and at least rattle the QB once in awhile. Oh that would be so sweet ...

we atleast have to mix things up a bit. its ok to put your cb on an island every now and then. expecially this year with them being so young. lets face it, this year is virtually over. we'll make a bowl game, but we aren't winning the big ten. purdue is really good, michigan has a shot and so does minessota. we have to pray we can beat purdue and lets face it, we play them tomorrow and we are gonna get beat BAD! the way we played against NW, we can't beat michigan either. i think we would take minessota but we don't play them. so we have to pray someone takes care of minessota twice and we somehow pull off victories against both purdue and michigan. both of which are effective passing teams. please god let fox come back soon!

unless something drastic happens this year is nothing more than a rebuild year. i say you put the cb's on an island 10 to 15 times a game and let em learn while they burn.

tressel ball is only good when you are winning. the problem is the first time we drop two or three games in a season tressel's welcome will be worn away quickly. it doesn't matter how effective or wise his schemes are. the fact that we don't win convincingly has made him many an enemy already. you add some losses in there and he is in trouble. we seriously need to put more points on teh board. your defense should always been allowd one "off" game per year when the offense bails them out. i don't see that as being possible with our offense right now.

Agreed...so far the defense has been far too easy to read pre-snap

I could not disagree more...Blind faith maybe, but I believe this past weekend was actually good for these younger players. They have not experienced anything but victory...there was certainly an air of complacency in the air saturday. That embarrassing loss SHOULD get that edge back. We all know the talent is there, but it is a matter of getting all three units (O, D, ST) to have tremendous efforts at once instead of relying on one of them to carry the team.

I am still not willing to give in to the bad play calling theory...certainly this can always improve. However, the execution has not been consistent enough...that is obvious.

Don't give up yet...I have a feeling this fire has been rekindled

Edit: for poor proof-reading

Couldn't agree more with the 1st paragraph there Grad! As far as the bad play calling theory, I tend to believe that the play calling and execution are somewhat related. For example, if the opposing team knows that 90% of the time you run on 1st down, that tends to make it a little more difficult to actually run on first down. I agree that we need more consistency. With a young offensive unit out there, one way to help with consistency is to build their collective confidence. I am not implying that calling for more passes on 1st down is the panacea; but less predictability on first down can only help. And this is true no matter the level of experience of the players.

Well Prof, I agree that the playcalling can be improved but I do consider execution as a more valuable component of the two. Teams can stack the line, but the O-line must be able to make the correct calls and adjustments and the QB SHOULD have the ability to read and adjust at the line. For instance, and as basic of an example as I can conjure up without a white board....let's say JT has called one of his famous ISO plays like 42 power. If the D-line shifts to have a 3 technique DT on the outside eye of the playside guard and a one technique/shaded NG over the center's weakside(a basic slide 4-3 look)...the offense should have the capability to make such a basic adjustment to shift the play to the zero hole for better blocking angles and matchups. This gives you a combo block with guard and center on the nose, a good angle for a turnout by the playside guard, an ISO block for the FB on the MLB, while the backside tackle cuts off the WLB to open a cutback lane. I know that sounds simple but judging by the trainwreck of carnage we are seeing at the line, I don't see this happening. I'm not sure if JT only allows certain checks in certain situations so take this very basic example with a grain of salt.

I'm not a Troy Smith for President guy, but the thoughts of him bootlegging off of the ISO did dance in my head while NU pinched hard between the tackles all night. I'll take TS against a DE holding contain anyday.
