Buckeye b'ballers you may have forgotten

Allen Hornyak Joe Roberts
This thread is getting a little ridiculous if people are going to forget one of the greatest shooters/scorers whoever played at Ohio State in Hornyak (the Bellaire bomber) and one of the starters, Joe Roberts, of our 1960 national championship team.

Witte -- how could you forget a basketball player who had his basketball career ended by some cheap bastard stomping on his face

Sorenson -- don't know how you can forget a guy who played in the Final Four and beat Kentucky to get there

I posted that for the majority of youth who think only Lucas Havilcek were the only good players before 1980..

They have already forgotten how to spell his name.

It is Allan.

I was in St John for his last game. Little did I know that he had his car packed outside the arena. After the game he left for home and never attended another class.

I remember Macon's story. Strangely, I don't recall the other three guys' stories even though they were all at OSU when I was as well. I remember Grady, but Kip and Pletke didn't even ring a bell.

Gary Rich
Dave Pletke
Rich and Pletke were in Eldumb's last class, along with "gunner deluxe" Randy Doss, IIRC. I believe Rich was sold as the best Center out of Maine that year or some such nonsense. And I believe it was Pletke, another C, who floored Burson on a blindside pick in a pick-up game in the summer and gave him a terrible concussion as a result that left him unable to speak for several months after - though he played that next season ( his Soph ) anyway - as his rehab let him return to classes in time. It was like an 8 out of 10 concussion. Along with a broken neck against IA his SR year, Burson went through some major injury in college ( despite being a tough MAJORLY STRONG skinny kid - he usede to lift with the FB O-line and hold his own with them ). Doss thought he had an open path to lots of PT as he sparkled in a pick-up game on his official visit. But it wasn't so easy when he had to actually play defense and not just throw up 20 footers at will. Kind of reminded me of Grandstaff but he did last a full season at least. I think all 3 were gone quickly once Gary Williams saw what a load of stiffs they all were! No real talent wanted to play for Eldumb by the end of his horrid time here.

There was a freshman guard that played on the team when I was a student named Ken Page. I think it was the 1977/1978 season. I can't remember what he did, but he was kicked off the team and I think he ended up going to New Mexico. I think he would have been an all American if he stuck around. I remember a game he had against Louisville in St Johns that brought the house down.

Kenny Page led the Ncaa in scoring his final year at NM. I always felt he was a huge loss as the true natural scorer in that monster class he came in with. Williams, Jim Smith, Carter Scott, Page, and that 6' point guard from Lyndon Mckinley whose name escapes me. I believe Page had a hard time keeping his hands off of other peoples property, which led to his exit after one year.

I was thinking maybe he was caught shoplifting. That rings a bell for me.

The guy that you cannot remember is Todd Penn. Never did a hell of a lot compared to the other members of that recruiting class. Page was from New York, New York and coming out of high school was rated as one of the best players in the country. I used to be like MD Buckeye in basketball recruiting back then.
