Friday, November 19, 2010 01:05:38 PM The SEC announced on Friday that Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl has been suspended by the conference for the school's first eight conference games because of NCAA violations.
Pearl admitted in September that he lied to NCAA investigators regarding allegations he hosted high school juniors at his home.
UT's first SEC game is Sat. Jan. 8 at Arkansas. He would be eligible to return Tue. Feb. 8 at Kentucky. The Vols have one non-conference game in January. They play at UConn Jan. 22.

Nice to see Pearl and Calipari carry the SEC flag into the winter sports.

When I was a kid it was the old Southwest Conference, now its called the Southeast Conference. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Wow. Only 8 games for rules violations and misleading NCAA investigators? Just when I think the SEC can't get any more lenient on cheaters...

To be clear, 8 conference games in a row, for a month. Which is still eight games, but it essentially torpedoes your SEC hopes, which can screw your Dance Chance.

And, while it is still 8 games, it was a penalty that was in addition to the 1.5 million salary reduction, and the ban on away recruiting until September of 2011.

Which is all to say, "only 8 games" sounds a little lighter than "eight conference games and 1.5 million and recruiting restrictions limiting your ability to travel to out of town recruits until September of 2011.* "

Carry on. That faint defense was of the SEC, not Pearl. And as to why he was not fired, you need to look at the contract and the grounds for termination - and the pay out if not "for cause". This has less to do with UT's moral outrage to Bruce's improper get together and lying about it than their response to contractual obligations.

(*That recruiting thing is key, as Pearl is known as a better recruiter than strategist.)

I agree with this. However, it still seems very light-handed--I would have expected a year or so.

Again, I agree. But while I have no idea how "cause" is defined in his contract, I have a hard time believing that NCAA violations and misleading NCAA investigators wouldn't constitute "cause." Even if it did not, it's ridiculous IMO that Tennessee wouldn't cut a guy with that kind of NCAA rule-violating resume loose and pay the pay out. I realize that's a separate issue from the SEC suspending him.

Does seem rather slap on the wrist-ish. I do not follow hoops close enough to have a memory/list of similar violation situations and the penalties imposed by other conferences for similar infractions.

Tress providing the tickets to those players was a violation. But it was nothing. Florida self reports stuff like you and everyone else does. So it is not the "violation" that is important, but which rule(s) and how egregious. The misleading stuff can crush your program, so I do not get why that was not a bigger deal. That - to me - is a separate and far more serious charge. That should get you gone, unless your AD had a bad lawyer and you can only be fired for murder on video.

Yeah. I think they are trying to convince him to leave somewhere else and let them off the hook. Shockingly, I do not think he will.

THe NCAA should have hit him for at least a full year. Look at what happened to Dez Bryant for breaking a rule and lying to the NCAA about it. He lost a full season and his college career was over.

The NCAA still has to weigh in on this, supposedly they'll issue a report to Tennessee next month. It's possible they'll hit Pearl and Tennessee harder - I hope they do, since lying to the NCAA has been something they've whacked players for in the past. And coaches should be held to at least the same standard as players, for crying out loud.

I'm sure the NCAA will be in a very playful mood to hear the UT appeal for this sleaze after they get done investigating the football and baseball teams as well.

They should save on travel and admin costs and just open NCAA investigative/enforcement branch offices on each SEC campus.

What puzzles me is Slive justifying only 8 games by noting that Pearl was honest and owned up to what he did.

Yeah, Mike....after lying about it until he was nailed to the wall and had no choice but to come clean....

I think it's been established that Pearl is working sans contract right now, meaning he can be fired without UT having to add him to the list of ex-coaches its still paying.

One of the juiciest rumors around Knoxville this week is that Pat Summitt will step in to coach the team in Pearl's absence. That would be a blast, IMO.
