Bruce Hooley - Biggest Idiot now back on the radio in Cleveland

Hooley is actually incredulous that Ohio State fans are complaining about a win that sends the Buckeyes to the Rose Bowl.
Hooley's point is that Tressel's philosophy will win in the Big 10 but will never beat elite teams.
Yeah, nothing unreasonable about that severe contradiction, nor dealing in immature extremes like 'never'.

I saw OSU take on 3 elite texas teams, 2 that were NC worthy, and miraculous comebacks don't really help sell the 'never' point very well. If Boom pounds it up the gut a few more times instead of busting two long runs, they win that game with tresselball. If Texas doesn't get a favorable spot from a ref who disregards the original spot, they don't win.

There are certainly flaws, but 'never' is foolish drivel meant to stir up ratings, which is all hooley does ysu, and is why so many dislike him. He revels in failure and conflict, it makes his day.

I guess it's just each individuals perspective.

See, I don't hear him saying anything that I necessarily disagree with. I don't think he's being unreasonable today. Obviously the "good radio" piece of it is that he and Spielman disagree and then discuss whatever it is they disagree about. Hooley is actually incredulous that Ohio State fans are complaining about a win that sends the Buckeyes to the Rose Bowl.

He's pointing out that there are fans that are upset with the buttoned down approach to offense that Ohio State employs. Seemingly sitting on a 7 point lead in the 2nd quarter doesn't sit well with some fans. Showing NO faith in Terrelle Pryor to run a little bit of a hurry up to try and win in regulation doesn't sit well with some people. I see both sides to be honest.

Spielman's point today is that Tress won the game. Hooley's point is that Tressel's philosophy will win in the Big 10 but will never beat elite teams. That's the discussion. I don't think it's unreasonable on either side.

He is skewing the numbers though. He makes it sound like 90% of the fans are in the anti-Tressel camp. What a bunch of BS. I'm sure they could find a number of emails on people who believe the moon landings were a hoax, if they did a show on NASA. Will he STFU if we beat the Pac 10 team in the Rose Bowl???? Of course not, there will be some reason why they lost. Pre-Penn State and Iowa he was talking like we'd lose both of those games. He was also slurping USC all year. This douche can't have it both ways. He certainly likes to move the goal posts on how he judges teams.

when the defense is playing well, the quarterback doesn't make any stupid decisions, and the special teams win the field position battle, Tresselball can beat any team in the country

if you lose one of those ingredients the game becomes too close for comfort more often than not

for instance, look at Penn State versus Iowa, in both games our offense played smart mistake free football, moved the ball on the ground and limited the mistakes passing while our defense played well

the difference was, against Penn State our special teams played lights out, Ray Small's returns helped us to win the field position battle the entire night and Penn States offense couldn't take any chances because they were always deep in their own territory

against Iowa, Thoma punted terribly and gave the ball to Iowa near mid field on numerous occasions, this allowed them to take chances offensively which opened up a couple big plays which were the difference between a three score laugher and an overtime grinder

My bad.

The "never" was actually mine and I didn't realize how the use of that word impacts the discussion.

He's not saying never (I'm listening today. Sick kids at home.). He's pulling from fans e mails (obviously the upset fans) and quoting the "0-5 against the last top 5 teams they've played." I understand that's his job: devil's advocate versus Spielman's unabashed homer.

I just don't think he's over the top in what he's discussing and the points he's bringing up.

ysu, how often do you hear Hooley praising OSU unless it's to bash the fans who doubt them? He's a fountain of negativity. DUIs, angry fans, coaching blunders, these things put a pep in his step. He has a completely different tone when talking about Tressel vs Matta.

Does Hooley agree that OSU's offense sucks or is he just hiding behind the emails, using them as the instigators instead of himself?

Oh he's using the e mails no doubt. I haven't heard him say that the offense sucks. The e mails are fueling the conversation b/w he and Spielman. Spielman is fielding the negative e mails as well. Again, he's the devil's advocate. He's the "but what if they had lost in that fashion" guy. I ask that question myself. Hooley's most controversial remark today, IMO, was that it appears that Tress has no faith in TP to try and win a game with him. You don't agree that one could make that argument if so inclined based on what transpired on Saturday?

I guess I just don't hear the anti OSU stuff as much as some others. I actually enjoy Hooley. I must just catch him on his "off" days.

I do see the LOVE for Matta that he has. He barely allows callers who are critical of Matta to finish so I do see that side of it.

EDIT I suppose he's praising OSU today in his own way. He's saying that he can't believe that Tressel has spoiled fans so much that they are acting like this after a win. That's praise, right?

Hooley's biggest "negative" that i can recall was his hatred of Pryor during Pryor's recruitment. While admitting he didn't follow recruiting, he would go on and on about how Pryor was a this or a that. It was, as on who does follow recruiting, quite frustrating.

As for the Common Man and the Torg, they don't bother me either. I don't always agree with them, but I find the show entertaining most days.

See, now those guys piss me off. I can't stand either one of them. I guess it's just that each of us has a different filter that these guys go through.

But Common Man and the Torg suck.

I can see why you'd say that YSU.... I just find most of their stuff pretty funny. OK "most" might be too much.. some of their stuff is funny, I think. I certainly don't look to their opinions as particularly "important" as Ohio State football goes. Their talking points tend to strike me as less abrasive than Hooley's. Just an opinion, I guess.

I suppose it's because I look at them as if they were simply two guys talking sports at lunch.. like I do with my friends. Hooley, I think, tries to carry himself with some authority.

I agree with this perspective

Another gem from Hooley.

Ohio State-Michigan has lost its luster

by Bruce Hooley, Special to FOXSports.com

For the longest time, they resisted playing for one of those goofy trophies so common to the tradition-addled Big Ten.

Michigan and Ohio State always let the other guys play for the bronze pigs, brass spittoons and wooden axes, because they typically played for something of far greater consequence ? the conference championship.

A lot can change in three years, though.
